rnrnrnrnrnrnrnWatch this recorded session, appropriate for K5 educators, and public library staff working with children, to review the platform, tools and content within this valuable resource.

Duration: 45 Minutes
[00:00:05.000]
Thank you so much for joining me today for the Washington State Library support elementary students with Gale In context elementary training session. My name is Tammi Van Buren and I'm one of the Gale trainers, your trainer that usually covers your territory

[00:00:21.000]
is Amber winter so I'm stepping in for her for the next couple couple months as she's on maternity leave, so I'm excited to be able to talk to you all.

[00:00:30.000]
I love when I get the opportunity to work with folks in the state of Washington I've done that out a couple times to do some in person training, a couple of years back and just absolutely beautiful state so I hope to have that opportunity to come back

[00:00:45.000]
and visit you all again in person someday. So for today's Virtual Training. the focus of our session is going to be on your elementary resource Gale In context elementary now this is a kindergarten through fifth grade resource, students can access this

[00:01:01.000]
cross curricular resource resource or the content within the resource, all in one place, our session will focus on the content, the features and enhancements within your Gale In context Elementary.

[00:01:15.000]
Okay. So a question already came through how often is the I'm guessing your, you mean the content within the resource. How often is it updated. So this information within the resource as soon as content is available to us so if we're talking magazines

[00:01:31.000]
or newspaper or images it's constantly being updated throughout the day every day. If you are seeing something or you're studying something in your school or in your building, that is, you're finding that it would be great to have a little bit more content

[00:01:46.000]
in there, let us know. At the end of the session I will leave you with a customer success managers at Gale, and they can provide that one on one support but they can also share that information with our product team and our content editors, you all are

[00:02:01.000]
on the front lines, you're the experts, any con anything you want to share with us, it's very valuable and we really love that you would share that information so that we can make this resource the best that it can possibly be.

[00:02:15.000]
So, please let me know and Rachel to if you want to share anything in the q amp a or follow up with an email directly to me I can take care of that today to if there's something specific you study in your building just let me know.

[00:02:30.000]
Okay, so what Gale In context elementary we're going to take a look we're going to start with an overview, and then we are going to explore the content and the features within the resource, and then questions, I encourage you to ask questions throughout

[00:02:46.000]
the session. But also, I will provide you with where you can go for additional support and additional training materials too so all of that. I'll answer questions at the end.

[00:02:58.000]
to so all of that, within the session.

[00:02:58.000]
So all of that, within the session. Dealing context elementary here's what the icon looks like it is designed for our kindergarten through fifth grade students, what you're going to find within the resources is a very kid friendly resource, you're going to find rich

[00:03:15.000]
to find rich content so it allows users to search through over 16,000 indexed images 600 videos, 1700 charts and graphs, and that was just the last time I pulled this information so as i as i mentioned content is being added regularly to this resource,

[00:03:34.000]
the interface dictation is unique together and context Elementary. So what this does, you have the same listen feature at the article level but when you're here on this homepage, your students have the ability to toggle on or off the sound.

[00:03:49.000]
So what that means is wherever their mouse travels to, it will read that text to them so wherever they move their mouse. If you turn that interface dictation on, then it'll read the text below.

[00:04:02.000]
Like, for example, my, my mouse is over pictures right now it would read pictures out loud to me, that I wonder questions I love these questions they're updated daily, and you're going to see them throughout the resource.

[00:04:16.000]
They encourage that inquisitiveness and spark curiosity with students. If you've ever had younger students in, I was a teacher elementary school teacher and my students would devour everything when we would study I'm in Michigan so we studied penguins

[00:04:31.000]
in January birds was part of my curriculum, and they would devour everything they could find on penguins in my library in my own classroom library the school Public Library they would devour it and I love this resource for not only for all of the the

[00:04:47.000]
research skills that you can build and all of the content, but just to kind of promote and encourage and support that inquisitiveness with students, visual topic tree, really helps students visually find the content related to their search we've got these

[00:05:03.000]
great subjects here, and it helps them drill down visually to find content related to what they're looking for. So maybe they're looking for a certain term like penguins, they can find some great content using that topic tree.

[00:05:18.000]
Now you do have some k five titles so you're going to see this book's category here on the homepage. And since the state of Washington has also purchased some ebook titles, you're seeing books here.

[00:05:31.000]
Now, within the topic pages will do some exploration there are books, articles, already there that's separate and I'll talk more when I can visually show you that.

[00:05:42.000]
But you're going to see this book's category because the Washington State Library has purchased some k five titles. So some of those titles that are now here in one spot your students can access all of the content within the database itself.

[00:05:57.000]
And now your ebooks can be accessible through this one location so it's a one stop shop for your elementary school students makes it really easy for them.

[00:06:06.000]
Now your own individual library may purchase additional titles and that may be a question I get here so I'm going to start and cover it now. You may already have some k five titles that your library, your elementary school has purchased or your district

[00:06:19.000]
has purchased for you. Will they show up here. Absolutely. They're going to show up in your Gale In context elementary so those from the state and those that you've purchased will all be in one spot.

[00:06:32.000]
You also have great news publications that are designed and written for kids. Also our fun facts are located here in the news section and pictures, pictures is something that students utilize a lot within this resource because they're using them for projects

[00:06:47.000]
or for papers. So we do have the ability now it's right on the homepage, they can quickly jump into pictures do a search and find some great content to add to their projects, the citations are automatically attached to everything, everything you're going

[00:07:03.000]
to find in this resource there's a citation. So that's a question I get a lot to is, well, can they students use these pictures in their projects. Absolutely.

[00:07:11.000]
Of course you're probably already teaching them to cite information so the citations are already there for them. And the last is videos and I love the video content that we have available it really takes that learning to the next level, especially for

[00:07:25.000]
our younger students. It engages them, and takes in their short little videos they're only a couple minutes long. So it really works with their attention span to.

[00:07:37.000]
I did I mentioned I was a former elementary school teacher.

[00:07:41.000]
Okay, so topics that you're going to find when you get to when you start drilling down this is our topic tree, they're going to start with that high level, high level overview so the first if we click into the subject of animals, you're going to see that

[00:07:54.000]
overview. And then this visual topic tree below where we have not just birds and mammals and fish will have animal related subjects and pet and farm animals so you can really drill down into those topic pages and do some exploration.

[00:08:10.000]
Now our topic pages are, again you say start with this high level, high level overview, but is there a curated collection of information on that subject.

[00:08:21.000]
So they are we use curriculum to take a look at designing and curating this collection of information, we look at the Common Core State Standards we look at national state standards so when I say curriculum I mean all of that, we also look at usage.

[00:08:37.000]
We also take listen to as, as we heard today, someone asked a question about information so we look at what what is being searched for and what is being taught in.

[00:08:52.000]
In elementary schools, and then also the feedback that we received from you all. That's how these are created our content editors work very hard at creating these great topic pages with this, starting with an overview and it's a collection of content.

[00:09:06.000]
They also have these great quick facts that are ready to use informations perfect for students reports and for general interest, even for teachers if you're teaching the topic of penguins you've got some quick facts there to share with kids.

[00:09:20.000]
It's a very powerful platform so the essay overviews that you're going to find on those topic pages you have leveled content so you can jump from a level one to a two or the other way around.

[00:09:32.000]
And in real time change that content level. There's also additional tools that you can utilize when you're talking about content levels and filtering down that I will share with you too.

[00:09:44.000]
We have a highlights and notes feature and this allows students if you're starting to teach annotating or, I love it for elementary because a lot of students are taught about putting information into their own words.

[00:09:57.000]
So plagiarism might be something you cover. I love highlights and notes as a tool when you're talking about that to within your classroom so hopefully you're starting to introduce annotation into a class or maybe I had an elementary library and share

[00:10:13.000]
using highlights and notes. In an article when they are looking for information for the beginning or the opening other paper the body and the conclusion and I'll model that for you today.

[00:10:24.000]
Listen and translate are available within the resource to you can listen to the text being read aloud, and you can translate the text, and the listen at the same time to over 40 languages.

[00:10:36.000]
So both those tools and it's all one and I'll talk to you a little bit more about that but it is all those features are available, how can you save share and share content to connect with your K five users get link is an option.

[00:10:50.000]
What get link does is it creates a persistent URL back to the content within the resource, so maybe you're want to add this to your online syllabus or your lesson plans, or you're using a learning management system such as canvas or school edgy and you

[00:11:04.000]
just want to quickly grab a link from the resource and put it into Canvas school G or any other learning management system you can do that social media posts, I don't know if you're using live guides at all but that is always an option if we have any

[00:11:17.000]
public librarians with us that are using live guides, email, or anywhere else maybe you have a newsletter that you send out you can use get link.

[00:11:26.000]
Send to, so you can send documents audio files and images to Google Drive, or I know we're talking to Washington So Microsoft One Drive directly from within your Gale resources.

[00:11:37.000]
And then if you are using Google Classroom at all you can create an assignment and pull information right into google classroom and share it immediately with your students.

[00:11:49.000]
Okay, so I did have a couple questions come in, is a narration robotic or natural sounding. It's in between, to be honest with you. It has definitely improved, I think it's a little bit more natural sounding but is it going to sound like me right now.

[00:12:05.000]
No, it's not. It's not that natural sounding but we're definitely getting there, and the narration. We do have the translation does use Google Translate I know that came up in the last session or pictures photos, or a combination of photos and drawings.

[00:12:19.000]
Good question, there are actually some drawings and I'm going to share that with you today we've got some illustrations available to.

[00:12:28.000]
Yes I did say that your resources can be integrated within Canvas and school edgy, your individual site has access to individual links, and you can set those up within Canvas school G or any other learning management system right let me jump into the

[00:12:46.000]
resource now continue answering these questions as we go. Some of them will probably cover.

[00:12:53.000]
So, will they need okay Trent. This is a great question will students need a password to access get link article know if you're directing students to a particular article, you're creating a link to it, they will be able to access that article.

[00:13:08.000]
now from there if they want to do some additional exploration, they'll need to log in, however, like within the resource maybe they click into something else.

[00:13:17.000]
At that point, they'll be prompted to login however they normally do.

[00:13:23.000]
Okay, so for elementary, I'm going to I'm going to save this question about the reading levels because I'm going to get to that and I want to share that with you, it'll be very helpful if it's visual.

[00:13:35.000]
Okay, so looking at the homepage. Gale In context elementary again, I showed you a lot of this within our PowerPoints. So let's dive in looking at the homepage the topics are here listed below.

[00:13:47.000]
And as we jump into each one, it takes us through to that topic tree before I do, let me show you some of these areas so books again because the state of Washington has purchased some ebook titles for you, you have access to those here.

[00:14:02.000]
And you may maybe you've purchased some on your own. so those would also be loaded here to

[00:14:10.000]
And I'm just scrolling down and showing you some of those covers, so your students can right away access ebooks if that's what they're looking for. And these are unlimited access no check in check out and they can be translated I'm going to model this

[00:14:24.000]
a little bit further for you as we dive into one of our topics and show you what it looks like. News is exactly that you can search through news articles we've got a few highlighted up at the top of the page, and then this is where all our fun facts are

[00:14:38.000]
and these are updated every single month. So we have the fun facts for August here, and tomorrow is National Dog Day I don't know if anyone knew that, but it is National Dog Day, I always come in, I love coming in here because I always learned something

[00:14:50.000]
new. A fun fact about the month.

[00:14:53.000]
Pictures same idea where you can quickly do a search. So one of our topics we're going to take a look at today's plants so let me show you what that looks like.

[00:15:02.000]
so I just typed in plants.

[00:15:04.000]
And here we have images and also there's some drawings, you may see some charts here. So all of that is available in your pictures, and then videos, a same idea where you can do a search on the let's change it up let's do life cycles are life cycle.

[00:15:22.000]
And here's all the video content that I have for life cycle, I put in. Let me see. I change it up if it gives me anything different here.

[00:15:31.000]
Nope, same thing. Perfect.

[00:15:34.000]
What you're also going to see on this homepage is the contextual toolbar here at the top. So this is where you can toggle the sound on and off to read what's underneath my mouse where my cursor is or where my mouse is that it will read that text to me.

[00:15:51.000]
Browse Topics will take you to all of the topics is going to be very text heavy so it's not going to be this visual experience your students are having when they access from the homepage.

[00:16:01.000]
Then you have title list search history get link and highlights and notes, all available and we're going to go over these other tools a little bit here too.

[00:16:09.000]
I wonder questions, I can read the question. Find out more it'll take me to that content.

[00:16:15.000]
If I go into one of the topics like animals, and each one the center spins a little differently.

[00:16:22.000]
You can see that high level overview of the topic of animals, and here are the topic pages. I click into mammals, then I'm taken to all of the topic pages I have available so that that from that sub subject.

[00:16:37.000]
I'm taken to these topic pages.

[00:16:41.000]
And we have quite a few listed will have more at the bottom, and these are, again, either their top searches we're seeing their current line to curriculum.

[00:16:57.000]
students are searching for these topics. That's these, it's a collection of information that's been curated for you. Let's go back to that homepage.

[00:17:06.000]
Because for today, we are actually going to go into plants and as I mentioned I taught elementary school and we always studied plants we did a unit of study on plants where we would start with the unit, a few weeks before Mother's Day, and the unit with

[00:17:21.000]
an all about plants learning celebration we'd invite. This was pre Kovats so we would invite students, families, into enjoy everything we learned during the unit of study we study a lot and we do a lot of reading and a lot of research and some of the

[00:17:35.000]
things we look at our different types of plants, or the parts of a plant or how plants are important to the environment or even insects that would help or harm plants so those are all some of the things that we would study.

[00:17:48.000]
So, with that in mind, this would have been a great resource that if I would have had access to it at that time to utilize when I was doing this unit of study.

[00:17:57.000]
So accessing plants jumping into types of plants, and I'm going to stick with that types of plants here's another I wonder questions so you're going to see them throughout the resource, so I'm going to jump into types of plants and this is going to take

[00:18:11.000]
me to that topic page.

[00:18:13.000]
Now, if I wanted to share this topic page with my students, maybe I have a classroom set of iPads or E readers and my students can scan. I think it's more iPads, but can scan a QR code.

[00:18:29.000]
I could use get linked that way where I'm grabbing the link to this topic page. And I am using a QR code generator and my students in my come into my library, they use iPads they scan that that QR code and are taken directly to this topic page so that's

[00:18:47.000]
just an idea, an elementary library and shared with me I thought it was a brilliant idea to utilize a good length that way. Of course all the other ways I mentioned previously, using it and lesson plans and syllabus.

[00:18:59.000]
If you are sharing it in Canvas. You can do that if, and I would suggest if you're using get link in your learning management system.

[00:19:10.000]
If you're using it this way where you're grabbing the link, and you're directing your students to a topic page.

[00:19:17.000]
This is for accessing an entire group of art, or a large amount of content, I would use get link, even if you raise your Gale resources are already set up within your learning management of.

[00:19:32.000]
Sit let's again I'll use Canvas as an example so your, your resources are set up your tech people set them all up there in there, but to access all of this content.

[00:19:43.000]
Even if you're using Canvas, so a topic page, I would use get link. When you're at the article level.

[00:19:50.000]
It's a little different. If you're using accessing information or or want to share information in an assignment in Canvas. At the article level, then I would embed it, I wouldn't use get link then I would use get link when you have like all this information

[00:20:02.000]
you want to share with your students, then I would use that in Canvas and there's slight difference and we may want to down the road visit, doing a webinar on learning management systems and how the Gale resources work within, but we're focusing today

[00:20:15.000]
specifically on dealing context elementary so I can talk more about that at a later date, or if you want to stay on the line I can talk to you a little bit more about that.

[00:20:24.000]
Okay, how many new sources does Gale draw from. Well, we do have a title list at the top if you notice on the homepage if you'd like to take a look I don't know off the top of my head, but we do have this title list here, and you can take a look at that

[00:20:39.000]
and and see how many new sources we have available we have quite a few. And are there any international we do we are a global company and we do pull in a lot of sources news sources from globally so maybe from Canada I mean, that might be one that you're

[00:20:56.000]
talking about, in particular, but we do have that global view and we work with a lot of publishers, so do take a look at that title this great question.

[00:21:05.000]
Okay, I lost my place here Oh, let's go back to plants, I went a little too far out I wanted to show that title list.

[00:21:15.000]
Okay, types of plants, let me jump into some of these tools and features so you know what you're looking at. We talked about get link. If anyone I'm we've talked about Canvas or you're learning management system.

[00:21:25.000]
Not sure if anyone is using Google Classroom it is up here at the top and you are able to pull in all sorts of content, a topic page, or maybe you're in a book or article section you want to pull that in or you're right in an article itself.

[00:21:41.000]
You can do all of that and pull that all into Google Classroom. Just as you can create a link back to that broad or specific information. So when I say that I like to think of this as a funnel where you're starting with pull using get link at the topic

[00:21:58.000]
page level and then maybe you've clicked into one of these content types like book articles, you can create get link back to the all the book articles, or maybe you've drill down even further and you've gone into an article, like types of plants here,

[00:22:13.000]
and then you can create a link back to that so it's all different, think of that funnel and you're really drilling down to the specific content you want to share the essays here at the top the essay overviews or topic overviews is where you have that

[00:22:26.000]
ability to change the reading level, we're in a reading level one where we happen to have a text feature words to know reading level two.

[00:22:36.000]
You have main ideas and this is, you know, this is what we're seeing a lot with our elementary topic overviews but those text features may be slightly different depending on the topic you're in all of our documents as I, as I mentioned the source citation

[00:22:51.000]
is always there, but all of our documents have it at the bottom so if it's an image if it's a video if it's an article, you're going to see that source citation at the bottom, it is defaulted to MLA eighth edition and it can be changed if your elementary

[00:23:05.000]
students are utilizing those citations hopefully that's something you're teaching within your libraries and within your classrooms.

[00:23:13.000]
You also have some of those features. I had shared with you in the PowerPoint I want to point them out here, so we have that list and button. Listen is available and it reads, both the sentence and the word, or I should say highlights the sentence in

[00:23:29.000]
word it reads everything. So let me click the play button. And you can see

[00:23:37.000]
it's highlights, let me pause it.

[00:23:40.000]
The green is a sentence, the blue is the word it's on. Now there are some features here under the gear I want to point out so there's a little settings gear.

[00:23:50.000]
and you can change what's being highlighted.

[00:23:53.000]
What colors are it's being highlighted in, you can turn on the enhance texts visibility or turn it off, it is on, it is defaulted to off, which it removes that text box.

[00:24:06.000]
did you notice that.

[00:24:08.000]
So it is defaulted to off my, my computer always cookies that that information whenever I turn it on. So it does for quite some time to be honest with you, but the enhanced text visibility is turned off.

[00:24:19.000]
If you want it on which I love for these younger students because you have a lot of emergent readers, you can turn it on and then when you click play that text box will pop up.

[00:24:29.000]
I can also slow down the speed. If I want to slow down that that reading speed of that tax so now when I click play.

[00:24:38.000]
I have that text box that pops up at the bottom so that is unique, or that is in all of your Gale resources, but it is found here under that settings gear you also have the ability to download this as an mp3.

[00:24:51.000]
Here is where you can decrease or increase the size of the text.

[00:24:57.000]
Translate is also right here where you can translate the language into 40 different languages. So that will translate the text, and also translate so it'll translate all the text, and it'll also translate the listen button so that listen feature at the

[00:25:14.000]
the same time. So you choose Spanish it translates to text, and also that listen feature.

[00:25:20.000]
The article information, so the publication information is still here it's under this little information icon. So we do hide it because that was something we heard from teachers that it's great but it would be really great if you, you know if you hit

[00:25:33.000]
it with not always the students need that they need the real estate of the content or the text itself. So that's why we've hidden it, but you can see to once you click into that article information, the actual Lexile measures of our level one and level

[00:25:49.000]
two and our level one.

[00:25:51.000]
So I just changed it back, right there that toggle right there are that drop down menu.

[00:25:58.000]
Okay, so we talked about those features. Let's take a look more at some additional content.

[00:26:08.000]
And then I'm seeing these questions come in so I will definitely hit all of your questions here but let me go through this before we completely run out of time and I'll answer the all the questions at the end today.

[00:26:19.000]
Okay, so looking at the content, you can see that we have book articles, books because we have some of those ebooks available news magazine biographies are all here, there's pictures, videos that are available and then related topics are at the bottom

[00:26:34.000]
so these are related topic pages here at the bottom. If we go into videos, you do have the ability to when I click into the video, you'll, it'll play the video, it is muted.

[00:26:48.000]
Thankfully, because it does start out at full volume so be aware of that if you have little ones using headsets, you can turn on or off the closed captioning, you can make this whole screen, I love videos to really draw students in and kick off a unit,

[00:27:02.000]
but also brain breaks they're great for virtual learning videos are great for, and they're only this one happens to be 40.

[00:27:11.000]
Oh no, I only have 45 seconds left. What is a minute long, the transcript is also listed below to. So all of that is here when you have that video content.

[00:27:20.000]
And again, you can use the link and share this link to this video, wherever you like.

[00:27:29.000]
Okay, Let's go back to our types of plants.

[00:27:33.000]
I talked about the closed captioning there for you let's go into books.

[00:27:39.000]
So we do happen to only have two books available.

[00:27:44.000]
But that's great to to have these ebooks that the states purchased for you all to access, when we are in the books they do look a little different than our articles.

[00:27:55.000]
And I'm going to go into book articles next because it is slightly different.

[00:28:00.000]
So it's taken a couple seconds here to load, which you can see this is like having a print book in front of you, what you need to Gale in context elementary with our ebooks is, you do have the ability to listen.

[00:28:13.000]
So we are in the book view, typically with ebooks, you have to be in text view to have that listen option.

[00:28:24.000]
But in Gale In context Elementary, we are able to offer the book view, and that listen feature at the same time. Now, translate is not available in the book view.

[00:28:36.000]
If you go back to text view. Absolutely. It is all those tools, let me show you real quick. All those tools listen in large text translate are all here in the text view because we can change the text, when we're in book view.

[00:28:50.000]
It's a print book can't really change that text at all. So, listening to you can listen to it you can enlarge it, you can make it whole screen we have some other tools over here on the, On the left hand side table of contents.

[00:29:04.000]
Did you can search for words or phrases throughout this text, or this ebook, you have the dictionary here.

[00:29:12.000]
You also have all of the books from this book shelf available so all of your science books, not just on plants, and then the full source citation is here too, but over to the right, we do have that citation available.

[00:29:27.000]
Okay, so let me know if there's any questions on ebooks or accessing or what it looks like we're going to go into book articles now book articles are exactly that they're a document from within books, so it may be coming from an encyclopedia.

[00:29:42.000]
And you may also find if you see here I have flowering plants at a level one and level two. So content levels, if I show you the filters on the right hand side, our content levels are aligned to or correlate to different Lexile measures, generally our

[00:30:00.000]
elementary or at a level one or level two, so you can see because that question came up about the Lexile measure or what reading levels are they at. Here you go.

[00:30:09.000]
So the content levels level one is up to 500 Lexile measure level two is five one to 850.

[00:30:16.000]
And I can filter to just level one and twos although that's what I'm pretty much seeing here, where I use this more as when I'm in news or magazines, as you all know, those can bump up that Lexile measure a little bit higher, so I tend to use them more

[00:30:31.000]
in the news and magazines when I'm working within the resource itself.

[00:30:37.000]
But you can quickly multi select, you also have publication dates subjects document types, all available here along with publication titles so you can multi select those and we went over content levels, and then search within if you really want to drill

[00:30:55.000]
down. Now, any filters I add will be applied to all of the content at once so let me model that for you. So I'm actually going to go into pictures now.

[00:31:08.000]
And when we're in pictures, I can filter to, I'm going to use a document type because, actually this came up and this is where I was going, I'm going to filter to drawings.

[00:31:20.000]
You can see quite a few different options diagrams portraits state tree statistical tables we have a lot, not just pictures, not just photographs within here.

[00:31:30.000]
The reason why I did drawings, is because we actually happen to have these labeled and unlabeled images within this resource. So here's all the labels, you're teaching parts of a plant, they're labeled for the student.

[00:31:44.000]
We also provide you with, go back to the results unlabeled.

[00:31:52.000]
And you're going to find this on various content throughout the resource, but it is here in plants and tart parts of plants because we're in types of plant and this is really great because it does give you almost a word bank here so you could use this

[00:32:06.000]
as a tool as a training tool or I should say a teaching tool with your students maybe you're checking for understanding, everything is here I had a teacher share with me that she likes to use these and she creates a word bank, and then the students label

[00:32:21.000]
the parts of the plan she doesn't check in and see where they're at with their learning. So she creates an activity with this and pulls it into or sends it to Google Drive.

[00:32:32.000]
One Drive, or email.

[00:32:35.000]
You also have that get link option and then download and print are also available so if I wanted to download this article I could, but I really love If I were to send it into send it to Google or Microsoft OneDrive, then I can manipulate it it turns it

[00:32:49.000]
into a document, and I can manipulate it there and turn it into an activity.

[00:32:54.000]
So just an idea from a teacher's perspective what they can do.

[00:32:58.000]
Alright so we talked about labeled and unlabeled images, let me go back real quick to book articles and then I'll take a look at these questions.

[00:33:07.000]
So in book articles. When I do some highlighting so let's say we went into this let's go back again.

[00:33:15.000]
Let's go into desert plants flowering plants.

[00:33:21.000]
Okay, so if I want to look at that, I enlarge that text and it's stuck with me here I'm going to decrease it here.

[00:33:29.000]
If I want to do some highlighting I had shared with you Elementary, an elementary teacher that had asked about or had the idea actually was a librarian and she said, Oh, using highlights and notes would be great if they're looking for information for

[00:33:42.000]
the opening other paper the body and the conclusion, and they're looking at different articles. What can they do is they can literally click and drag over text maybe they only like this first sentence, and they're putting anything for the opening of their

[00:33:57.000]
paper in yellow. Right, and maybe they're putting opening here, or they're using this article and they're highlighting some content maybe this is a quote or a fun fact, they want to share in their project or in their writing so imagine if you were doing

[00:34:16.000]
a paper and you were doing the opening is in yellow or and the body something you want to put in the body of your papers in blue and the conclusion is a different color or, like I said, it's a fun fact that you want to include in the body of your paper

[00:34:31.000]
so all those options are available a best practice is if a student has highlighted some information is to send it, send it to Google Drive, or one drive or email it if they if they're using email, those options are available.

[00:34:46.000]
If you use get link, get link is not going to save these highlights so if you as a library and you're doing a mini lesson on highlights highlighting text, or a teacher that's doing that.

[00:34:59.000]
And you want to share this article with these main ideas or evidence to support a project maybe they're working and looking for evidence, while through their research and you're using this as a model, what I would suggest is sending it download or print

[00:35:16.000]
get link is going to take you to the article, but it's not going to take you back to what you've highlighted. Okay, it's just it's a link that will take you back to this article itself so if you want to save your notes what you've marked up then obviously

[00:35:29.000]
you need to send it to, to any of those places with the Send to option, download or print right makes sense because you want to keep your copy of it. Okay, I hope that makes sense sing with students, my best practice is to always have them send it.

[00:35:39.000]
Same with students, my best practice is to always have them send it. I do like to use the documents in using Google doc or Word docs, so I do tend to use those a lot because it's really nice a folder is created in my Microsoft OneDrive and it's titled

[00:35:58.000]
Gale In context elementary and then anytime I'm in this resource and I send the document over to or a video or an image it lands in that folder and I don't have to worry about it it's there, it's all marked up the way I want it to be and ready to go.

[00:36:13.000]
Okay. There is one other section I'll share with you real quick and that's highlights and notes, and these I like to call digital note cards, or digital notes used to call them cards because they're used to have a grid around them but now they're digital

[00:36:26.000]
notes and throughout this session, if students are in multiple articles, highlighting away. This will continuously build out. Now if they close it and don't grab these notes.

[00:36:38.000]
That's why I always say best practice send the entire document with everything you've highlighted any notes you've taken, send it somewhere do something with it before you leave your session.

[00:36:48.000]
They also have the option to just grab their notes and keep their notes and send just that to Google, Microsoft, email, download, print, are all here.

[00:37:00.000]
Source citations are also here so if they were multiple articles, they would have multiple citations available that they can send a noodle tools are easy them if they're using those at all, they can change the format if they choose to again defaulted

[00:37:13.000]
to MLA eighth edition. Their Bibliography will go with them so even this one singular article, everything will go with it any notes I've taken, I can edit those notes before I send them that option is available to.

[00:37:28.000]
And then I can send it all to my, you know any cloud source I'm using. I can also label it before I send it so if my yellow is quotes and my blue is facts.

[00:37:39.000]
This is not a drop down menu, it's just once, I use these all the time so my, my computer saved that information, makes it a little bit quicker for me but it's not a drop down box, so I can save those and that legend will go with all of this into my Microsoft

[00:37:55.000]
OneDrive. And not only that, from my OneDrive. If I'm in there. I've saved this sent this document, I can click into the article title from my one drive and come back to this, this article within the resource now again it's not going to save my highlights

[00:38:15.000]
and notes that I already have I already sent my document with everything I've highlighted into my one drive so I don't have to worry about that. But if I want to come back and revisit this article, I can do that.

[00:38:27.000]
Maybe there was something in the article that I found interesting, or I wanted to change it to a level one or you know there's there's other content available that I want to do some exploration to I can do that.

[00:38:41.000]
So that's, that's a great way to utilize that tool.

[00:38:44.000]
All right, I am going to look at these questions, real quick, let me go show you a slide while I do.

[00:38:51.000]
So I'm going to go back to my PowerPoint, and then I'll go through these questions.

[00:38:56.000]
One other tool that you have available I mentioned learning management systems, let me show you when you're Gale resources are integrated into Canvas, or schools and these are just two, and there's many learning management systems but then when they're

[00:39:10.000]
integrated into those resources, you can from the, this is Canvas is the first example, I'm creating an assignment, and I want to embed that an article I found directly into an assignment that I'm creating for my students, I can do that, but your Gale

[00:39:28.000]
resources have to be set up first. So you would access it through Canvas. There's a little plug that all your External links are at that can be access to you can add a link or embed the document embedding is beautiful because it keeps your students right

[00:39:44.000]
there within your canvas experience school g if you're using school g same idea. This is embedding a document embedding a video.

[00:39:54.000]
Okay, already jumped in.

[00:39:56.000]
We do have an academic session coming up. And I do want to answer these questions What is the interface like on an iPad. So the nice thing is with your Gale resources, is that the resources are mobile responsive, so they automatically adjust to any device

[00:40:13.000]
your students are on. So, if they look great on an iPad I have an iPad and access them all the time, and their mobile responsive, so they adjust. You don't have to do anything on your end they automatically do that for you, and adjust to that iPad size

[00:40:28.000]
so all the tools and features are still there and available thanks for asking that question.

[00:40:34.000]
Okay, how many reading levels are there within the elementary grades, so I shared that the content levels with you let me know if you want any additional information.

[00:40:43.000]
There are, let me go to this next slide.

[00:40:47.000]
You're going to find some really helpful tools as related to reading levels on the support site at support that Gale calm, we have training materials tutorials tip sheets one of those tip sheets covers all of those reading levels, and the Lexile measure,

[00:41:04.000]
measure they're correlated to. So you'll find that on the support site also lesson plans and scavenger hunts are also available we've created all those for you We even have some projects available, looking for principal tools like posters or scavenger

[00:41:19.000]
hunts or the resource guides are a step by step through the resource itself so directly through Gale In context Elementary, we have those there for you.

[00:41:28.000]
And also we have great marketing materials web banners social media posts, all available within this email templates, even if you're looking to promote this this resource with your school community, they're all on the support site.

[00:41:41.000]
So hopefully that helps you and answers that question.

[00:41:47.000]
Okay, what does this particular article look like for kindergarten learners. Everything I showed you is their view. So if you're looking for kindergarteners, and I did teach early elementary, I love, of course the level one, but I love the listen feature

[00:42:05.000]
because you have, especially at early elementary, your reading levels are all over the place and it does happen to upper elementary too Don't get me wrong, but early elementary kindergarteners that listen feature is going to be key for them using the

[00:42:20.000]
videos using the images, but really if they want to, they are interested they see a picture like what I showed you the flowering plants they like the picture, then this article could be really helpful to them, have them click on that list and button.

[00:42:34.000]
That's where they're going to be able to listen to that text being read aloud to them and comprehend it. And then utilize or use it in the classroom however you're having them work with it.

[00:42:46.000]
Okay, why using bed over get link, great question, Emily embed within Canvas and let me go back to that.

[00:42:54.000]
So embed within your learning management system is going to give you this look.

[00:43:01.000]
Get link. The reason, where I would use get link is, if I have a topic page I want to share with my students in my learning management system and we're going to use Canvas today as an example.

[00:43:14.000]
So I'm in Canvas I'm a teacher and I have, I want to share an entire topic page with my students, then I would use get link.

[00:43:23.000]
I have filtered my content down. I'm scaffolding, my content on a subject of plants for my students and I want just level one materials, nothing else.

[00:43:34.000]
I would filter it down to content level one us get link, share that in Canvas.

[00:43:41.000]
Maybe I'm using level one and two, I'm differentiating instruction, and I want my students to pick and choose through this content but I just want to filter it to all level one and two because there are some level threes in here I will let you know that,

[00:43:56.000]
again, magazines, newspapers tend to bump up that content level. So there are some little higher level which is great because we do have students at the elementary level that are ready for level threes Middle School reading levels so we do include that.

[00:44:12.000]
But I filter down I just want level ones and twos. Again, that's where I would use get link I differentiate my instruction, I would use get link and then share that link within an assignment in Canvas.

[00:44:23.000]
Great question. and that is how I would use it.

[00:44:27.000]
Okay, I noticed that your geography topics are built around a publication that was over 10 years old. Okay, I will point this out to our product team, not all, not all countries show up on the country's topic list.

[00:44:42.000]
Kids visual reference.

[00:44:46.000]
Okay is a publication is there any plan to update the resource and include more countries in the list. Dana I will share this exactly your comment. And if you don't mind let me know if this is ok, I love to share your contact information with our product

[00:44:59.000]
I'd love to share your contact information with our product team and our content team, because they may reach out and ask you specific questions. This is great feedback.

[00:45:08.000]
We love to hear this, please tell us because like I said you all are on the front lines you share such great information with us. So I will share that with our product team and our content editors, and if it's okay with you just let me know in the q amp

[00:45:20.000]
a, I would love to share your information so they can reach out to you and ask more questions so we can get it exactly right.

[00:45:27.000]
Thanks for asking.

[00:45:29.000]
Will you show content appropriate for kindergarten okay so all your level one is going to be at that kindergarten level.

[00:45:39.000]
So, if you are in the resource and you're looking at first grade or the level one information that is going to content level one that's going to be more geared towards your kindergarteners so anytime you're in there and you see that green little icon

[00:45:53.000]
with the single dot that's geared towards our younger elementary students.

[00:45:59.000]
Let me know if you're looking for any particular kindergarten content I'd be happy to go in and show you that.

[00:46:08.000]
What do speaker readers of other languages say about. Oh, good question. So, we use Google Translate so this feedback that you've probably heard about Google Translate is what what we here at Gale about the Gale translations.

[00:46:24.000]
I have had. I have heard about the, and let me go into an article I want to get this exactly correct. So, where I've, and this is mainly you know from on site sessions that I've been and I've heard that the Chinese is really good.

[00:46:42.000]
So that, and I haven't had. I haven't had comments about every single language, but I have heard that the Chinese, the simplified especially Chinese is really good.

[00:46:51.000]
I've had mixed reviews on some of the German But that was before we had Google Translate. So, I haven't had anything recently I've heard that the Spanish is is really good.

[00:47:02.000]
I had someone I want to say it was in one of my Washington sessions, share about the French and how the French is really good too. So I hope that helps you out a little bit, but that's the feedback I personally have received well I can't speak to the

[00:47:16.000]
whole company of Gale but I know that we did add that Google Translate A while back so that probably has helped a lot too.

[00:47:25.000]
When you share a link with a broad topic will students need a separate link to read the drill down info. So, great question. So you've shared a link to the topic of types of plants right so the topic page itself.

[00:47:40.000]
Will they need a link to get to a singular document, really depends. Do you want to share Do you want them to get to that singular document, probably, if you want, if your goal is to get them to drill down to a certain document, then definitely use a

[00:47:57.000]
get link to that document. If your goal is to share with them the entire topic page, and let them pick and choose well then no they only need to get to that topic page.

[00:48:08.000]
And they only need one link to that topic page and let me know Andrea if that answers your question, or if you have another question.

[00:48:23.000]
Okay, so it seems like level one reading is a bit much for some students who are k one is there a way to locate readers who are struggling to read in the younger grades way to locate you, I think you mean content, who are struggling in the younger grades.

[00:48:39.000]
So, level one is. Yes. All right, let me show you this. Maybe this will help you because we're getting a lot of questions about kindergarten so let me go back to in advanced search.

[00:48:51.000]
So remember, I showed you more of a broad approach, let's get specific you're looking for, really, that lower level content at the the lowest reading level we have available in Advanced Search.

[00:49:05.000]
And this is another time I would use get link and I'm not even going to put in a topic I just want to pull back everything I have. You do have the ability, content level is what I've been talking about but maybe you want to select Lexile measures, you

[00:49:20.000]
want the, we have 200 to 400 is the is the lowest here that you can you can filter by.

[00:49:26.000]
And I'm going to close it.

[00:49:30.000]
There we go, or if there's a specific Lexile measure you can put that in here. Now I'm not going to put in any sort of topic at all into advanced search.

[00:49:38.000]
I'm going to click search.

[00:49:40.000]
And this is what we have and this is 400 and below.

[00:49:45.000]
So, lower than 200. I don't remember we're non fiction reference information so it is a little bit more challenging to have reading levels below that 200 within a database, but that's where that listen feature comes into play.

[00:50:02.000]
Right. So hopefully this will help answer that question about how low do your reading levels go and how can you find that content, this is how you can do that.

[00:50:12.000]
And then here's that get link or you can search within for a certain topic and see what we have available but this is filtering down all the information in the database to that 200 to 400 Lexile measure.

[00:50:25.000]
Hopefully that helps you a little bit but don't forget about that listen option.

[00:50:30.000]
Okay sorry located articles more appropriate for readers who are in K one and struggling to read. Okay, I think I just answered that will students ever need a password to access books.

[00:50:41.000]
So to access anything within the database. It really depends on how you set it up. You have the ability to sign, access the resource and whatever you've set up for your databases, maybe you use a password.

[00:50:55.000]
Maybe you're using Microsoft or Google as a single sign on. We have the capability and Gale admin to set up those Single Sign On like Google, Microsoft, I think we have class link and clever also.

[00:51:10.000]
So if you are using any of those single sign on. You can set it up in Gale admin and cuz I have Customer Success managers that can help you with that.

[00:51:20.000]
And they will put your information in or help you put that information into Gale admin so that your students don't need a password to access any content, or if you're using Canvas, then they won't need any type of authentication they won't need a password

[00:51:37.000]
to access it. Your last option two is when they're at school, you can put in their IP, your IP address for your school into Gale admin or maybe you have an IP address range, so that again when they're on campus or when they're at school, they don't have

[00:51:52.000]
that password blocking them from getting into the resources so we try really hard to work with every system, and also to remove that barrier because especially with our younger users.

[00:52:02.000]
We know how important it is to get them right into the resources.

[00:52:06.000]
I'm going to share my other screen with the customer success manager information. While I answered these last questions.

[00:52:16.000]
Okay Capstone interactive books are all narrated with a natural voice with a normal looking book, by the way. Oh thanks for sharing that I understand Gale is in competition with Capstone, but it is untrue that their ebook format narration is unique.

[00:52:31.000]
So are you saying it's untrue that capstones is unique.

[00:52:35.000]
Help me out there I'm not really sure what that come but thanks for sharing and I just read it to everyone so thanks for sharing.

[00:52:41.000]
I don't know that, honestly, I've been at Gale for quite a number of years, and maybe the. Maybe it's you're talking about the ebooks may be kept on as a competitor to our ebooks maybe that's what you're referring to, but I haven't actually heard of Capstone

[00:53:00.000]
books so I, as a competition. Now, there's other ones I've definitely heard of.

[00:53:06.000]
But Capstone is new to me so thanks for sharing that information that's good to know and it's always good for us to take a look at what they're doing and how we can improve.

[00:53:14.000]
Please demo how you use scaling context with kindergarten. Okay, so I covered that a couple of times. Let me know if you want more, what else you want me to do with the kindergarten, with our elementary resource.

[00:53:28.000]
Please know that this resource is designed for K through five students and our students that are accessing this resource are mainly pointing and clicking, they're not using the basic search too much Advanced Search that's really for our, our librarians

[00:53:46.000]
media specialist and teachers, our elementary students are clicking into a topic, they're clicking into a sub topic, and then they are accessing that content through that topic page.

[00:54:00.000]
The listen feature is going to help them. And then also, that toggling on the sound, turning that on and off is going to be really helpful for them to read what's underneath their mouse.

[00:54:13.000]
Okay so that can help your younger users too. So filtering by Lexile measure is going to be helpful that listen features going to be helpful using the video content and images for kindergarteners is going to be something that will really help them anytime

[00:54:29.000]
that and and again I taught lower elementary I actually started my career at kindergarten, anytime they can listen to that content being read aloud just as you're encouraging parents to read aloud to them at home it's the same idea.

[00:54:43.000]
There are there emergent readers, they're hearing that text they're seeing the images that go along with it. So utilize what we have in the resources, but encourage parents to to work with their students within these databases, with their with their younger

[00:54:58.000]
students with those kindergarteners, I hope, hope that helps and that a lot of that is just from my own experience working with younger students to.

[00:55:07.000]
Okay, so how quickly did the notes and highlights disappear. If I log off of this, they're gone. If I, if I closed my browser without sending them or printing them or downloading highlights and notes, then they're gone.

[00:55:20.000]
The resource will time out to it's, it's usually, and you get a notice there'll be a notice that pops up on your screen.

[00:55:27.000]
That will ask you if you want to continue.

[00:55:30.000]
It takes about 20 minutes 20 plus minutes before it times out. So if students are walking away from their computer, maybe they want to pass through in your library and they want to pass to you know go use the facilities.

[00:55:43.000]
Let them know that they might want to save their information before they leave, because sometimes that can take a little while I know, but that they do timeout after about 20 minutes.

[00:55:53.000]
Great question.

[00:55:55.000]
Okay, let's see what else we know where is the labels located so that we can adjust the legend. Okay. It is in the upper right hand corner.

[00:56:04.000]
Let me share that with you real quick so in highlights and notes, and the labels is right here. So you do have to be in highlights and notes and then you can change those labels to whatever you want, save them, and that will be that legend then if you

[00:56:22.000]
notice, lives here

[00:56:26.000]
at the top of the document.

[00:56:32.000]
If a teacher is accessing in context through a public library, okay this came up in the last one.

[00:56:38.000]
No Erica So, Erica asks if a teacher is using in context through their public library would they be able to embed it into school and she know because schools are all learning management systems school edgy Canvas there's information on the back side.

[00:56:55.000]
That usually the tech people are setting up within your district that has to be set up and it's unique to your school location, or your district. Okay, so no you would have to have that public libraries, there's a secret, and a secret and key that is

[00:57:14.000]
needed to set that up, and you would need that public library and they don't share that's that's admin and information so no you can't do that you can't embed if you're using the public libraries access.

[00:57:26.000]
So thanks for asking that came up I got an email about that after the last session to. Is there an app for Gale to us on an iPad. We used to have Google Apps but they they got rid of them, Google got rid of them and as far as an iPad.

[00:57:42.000]
What we do have, and it's called access my library. Let me go to the support site and show you that. So, this is the support site, I had shared that talked about that briefly on the second to the last slide that we were on under Tools, you have the access

[00:58:01.000]
my library.

[00:58:04.000]
This is the app that we have. So, you can use the app store, if you look in and your want. It's not you're not looking for Gale you're looking for access my library.

[00:58:13.000]
And the cool thing is and I did this on my own it's been updated recently was updated in February to the four point O version and I love it, it. I wanted to I have an iPhone, and I went on to my iPhone and I quickly added the access my library app, and

[00:58:28.000]
what it did is it found all the libraries in my area so it was looking for public libraries and I was quickly able to add my public library and access information from my public library right on my cell phone.

[00:58:41.000]
So we do have the access my library app available so you might want to use that thanks for asking about that is the embed feature only for Canvas in school and she or Google Classroom.

[00:58:52.000]
Okay, Let me show you google classroom.

[00:58:55.000]
And and those of you that have to leave, I appreciate if you stick around to hear all these, these are great questions.

[00:59:02.000]
But I will send you a follow up email for those of you that do have to leave. And in that email you'll find links to the support site my contact information.

[00:59:11.000]
They'll also be some links to some materials that you the recording for example will be there where you can find that recording end and attendance certificate for attending live session.

[00:59:22.000]
So all those will be in that follow up email does take 24 hours before you receive that okay so the question is, Google Classroom let's go into Google Classroom.

[00:59:33.000]
Let's go into animals, we're going to do a different topic mammals, and since it's almost national Dog Day.

[00:59:40.000]
That's going to docs. Okay, so I can remember, I've different levels that I can share information at and I, again like to think of it as a funnel, where I can use get link or Google Classroom so let me use Google Classroom.

[00:59:53.000]
I want to pull this entire topic page into Google Classroom.

[00:59:57.000]
Now bear with me because I do have to. It does pop up on a different screen so I have to share that screen. So this is what you'll see it's just because the zoom that it's popping up on a different screen you'll see it pop up in your window.

[01:00:11.000]
As soon as you click classroom, you have the ability to choose a class. I'm going to choose my second grade class, you have the ability to choose an action create an assignment ask a question make an announcement or create material.

[01:00:23.000]
I'm going to make an announcement, and click Go. Now I can enter in additional information.

[01:00:34.000]
National Dog.

[01:00:37.000]
Dog Day.

[01:00:39.000]
Okay, now I can I have some options, I, which is really awesome that I can bold or italics, or underline or bullet lists.

[01:00:49.000]
Remove formatting of formatting if I want, what classes for and what students, it doesn't have to be for all my students, and when I click Post, I have the ability to then view, if I want to, but I know that it's there but I'm going to show you what it

[01:01:04.000]
looks like when I click View. So let me go back to share my other screen because that's where it's going to pop up.

[01:01:12.000]
So here's my classroom.

[01:01:14.000]
National Dog Day and that link will pop up here in a second.

[01:01:18.000]
There we go. So it is in my classroom.

[01:01:22.000]
I can, again, create an assignment I just made an announcement. And from here my students can click into that topic page, and it'll take them right to the spot.

[01:01:32.000]
Great question.

[01:01:34.000]
Okay, let me know if there's anything else you want to see.

[01:01:38.000]
Yes on the country's okay thanks Rachel, I will let them know.

[01:01:43.000]
Dana okay Dana and Rachel both of you.

[01:01:46.000]
Thanks for the information about the countries I will let them know that it needs some, some attention.

[01:01:54.000]
Okay.

[01:01:57.000]
Okay. Great. Thanks for sharing that.

[01:02:00.000]
is the translated Chinese spoken in Mandarin or Cantonese, good question. Erika.

[01:02:07.000]
I don't know, I'm, I'll be perfectly honest with you, I think, I think simplified is Mandarin.

[01:02:13.000]
I'm, I'm fairly certain, I'm like, 95% certain simplified as Mandarin. So, you may want to test it out I can look into it too and I can get back to you, but thanks for asking that question because I like I said I'm about 95% sure that simplified Chinese

[01:02:30.000]
is Mandarin, and I'll ask about the other, I'll check in with our folks and find out for you and I'll email you back.

[01:02:40.000]
Okay.

[01:02:43.000]
Great.

[01:02:47.000]
Um, good question. Is it better to use Gale app on the iPad or a web browser, I kind of like the web browser, personally, but it really depends on how you're setting it up in your library.

[01:02:58.000]
It can get confusing if you're using access my library app and it pulls up your school it pulls up the public library you know i, it really depends on you probably have to go through all those iPads and set them up so that it's accessing your information

[01:03:13.000]
in your school. I personally think I would use the web browser but it's up to you, whatever you think is easiest with your students, you may want to try both have your own little focus group and see which one works best with your with your students and

[01:03:26.000]
you may have some students that yeah definitely going to use the app and other students like nope I want them to learn how to use the web browser.

[01:03:38.000]
Okay.

[01:03:40.000]
Talking about embedding again. So we can't embed articles from a public library to a school class.

[01:03:47.000]
You could yes you could use get link to share those articles, so you can embed if you are in Canvas, or school edgy, or any other learning management system.

[01:03:59.000]
And you want to embed an article as I showed you in my screenshot so you want that look that embed.

[01:04:07.000]
You have to use your own library resources your own school resources, not the public libraries, if you're using your public library and sharing a link to a specific article get link.

[01:04:17.000]
Yes, you can choose just that link however you like if you want to put it in your learning management system if you want to put it in a lesson plan if you want to share it on a social media posts you can use get link all those different ways.

[01:04:31.000]
That is correct.

[01:04:34.000]
Oh, you're welcome for showing the Google Classroom view.

[01:04:39.000]
Oh, great. So we have a public library and, but she's showing teachers in a public school how to use the databases and the ones they got from Washington State Library, so I'm glad that was helpful.

[01:04:48.000]
Thanks Chelsea, and there are great training materials to their short little video tutorials to support. If you're using Google Classroom that you can use.

[01:04:56.000]

[01:05:11.000]

[01:05:25.000]
