Welcome to your training for the Washington State Library. Today's training is enhancing. Elementary education. Discover the power of gale resources for K. Through 5. My name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer at Gale, and I welcome any questions that you may have throughout today's training. Please feel free to use the QA. Box.

[00:00:21.000]
Today we will be focusing on Gale in context, elementary.

[00:00:26.000]
This resource also has all of your Gale ebooks.

[00:00:30.000]
For kindergarten, through 5th graders.

[00:00:32.000]
On the same platform. So it makes it really easy for elementary students to access all of their content in one spot for them.

[00:00:41.000]
And they can access all that content through this great user friendly resource. My goal today is for you to have a better understanding of the resource, the functionality, and the great content that we have available. Because this is across curricular areas.

[00:01:03.000]
So let's dive in. We're going to start with an overview of the resource. And of course I always like to cover access into your Washington State Library resources. So if you're not using your direct Urls for your library, then I I can share with you where you can find them at.

[00:01:20.000]
We're going to browse and search through content. We're going to take a look at those resource features and tools. Any questions ask at any time, but I will stay on at the end of today's training to answer any additional questions, but also leave you.

[00:01:33.000]
With contact information. Did you know that you have Gale customer success managers that are there to support you and all things? Gale.

[00:01:42.000]
So your customer success managers, can help with walking through all the great support materials that we have on the Gale support site. They can share with you how to use your direct URL single sign-on capabilities. They also can share with you usage reports how to use our usage dashboard, and so much more they really are. They're just to support you and make sure that you have a huge success with your Gale resources from the.

[00:02:07.000]
Washington State Library, and I'll share their information at the end of today's training. But it'll also be included in the follow-up email that you'll receive.

[00:02:15.000]
That takes about 24 h before you receive that.

[00:02:20.000]
To access the Washington State Library Gale support site that we've created. You can use this direct URL here, and I will post that in the.

[00:02:30.000]
So you can grab that. URL. This is a really good site to bookmark.

[00:02:35.000]
Because not only will it share with you your direct Urls for your library site, it also provides you with training, upcoming, training. All of our recorded training that we've done also all of the training materials for your individual resources. You'll find on the support site here the link that I shared with you, and then also marketing materials. So if you're looking to promote your resources, you're going to find.

[00:03:00.000]
All kinds of marketing materials. I'll talk more about that towards the end of today's training. But again, this is a great spot to bookmark.

[00:03:07.000]
For future reference. And all of your access information product information when you access it. This is what it looks like. You'll just select your library name from the Dropdown menu. If you do not see your library name.

[00:03:23.000]
Please let me know. In the in the QA. Box.

[00:03:27.000]
And it may be that your.

[00:03:30.000]
Library or your district does not have access, and we can connect you with a fantastic person at the Washington State Library that can help with that. So.

[00:03:39.000]
If you do not see your library name, just let us know, and we can follow up with you.

[00:03:44.000]
Once you do find your library name, it'll take you right into your product list all of your links.

[00:03:52.000]
We'll have your location id built in now. When I took the screenshot I did not sign in with any.

[00:03:58.000]
Particular account. So that's why you're just seeing an empty location id here. That location oops. Let me go back. That location id is how we track usage. So you'll see all of your direct Urls for all of your gale resources. Then you have your ebook information, including mark records.

[00:04:16.000]
Training materials, marketing materials. There's technical documents.

[00:04:20.000]
VPAT information. And then this takes you to the Washington State Library website.

[00:04:27.000]
And again, that support site is something that your customer success. Managers, can walk you through.

[00:04:35.000]
We do. I believe we have a training.

[00:04:38.000]
A recording, and let me double check.

[00:04:41.000]
That I did a while ago on the support site, but something we might want to consider down the road of adding another one, because there actually have been some updates. So yes, we have the usage dashboard. A recording for that already. You'll find again on that site. You'll see all of the Washington State Library specific trainings, and I'm.

[00:05:02.000]
I'm pretty certain that I did a support site training. Yeah, there it is, too. So we do have support site on there also.

[00:05:08.000]
So let's talk about Gale and context, elementary.

[00:05:12.000]
Now this resource. I'm going to go through a few slides and talk to you about what you're going to see and what your user experience will be. It's a very kid, friendly.

[00:05:22.000]
Resource that we have.

[00:05:24.000]
That is cross curricular reference, you're going to find rich content. It really allows our users to search through over 16,000 images. We have 600 videos, 1,700 charts and graphs available. So great multimedia.

[00:05:40.000]
The interface dictation. You can toggle the sound on and off. That's right here in our contextual toolbar. And I'll model that for you today, so it helps navigate through the resource. So wherever my mouse lands it'll read.

[00:05:53.000]
That information below. So it'll read pictures or videos. So it helps our students navigate through the resource.

[00:06:01.000]
The, I wonder? Questions are updated daily, and they really encourage that inquisitiveness and spark curiosity. And we know at this age especially, that's what really drives them into this type of content is you are exploring or encouraging that curiosity. And the I wonder questions.

[00:06:24.000]
Connect to students in that way where they can find additional information, find out more.

[00:06:30.000]
I know when I taught elementary.

[00:06:33.000]
The students would devour any information we were covering. So we do we, the curriculum. We cover birds, and since I'm from Michigan.

[00:06:43.000]
We always did penguins in January. So we did a big study unit study on penguins, and they would wipe out anything they could get their hands on. They loved learning about penguins, and this was true, for pretty much everything we studied.

[00:06:58.000]
They were always trying to find more information, especially if it was science related.

[00:07:02.000]
And they would wipe out the school library, the public libraries, and I was in a k 1 building where they were all there were, I think, 7.

[00:07:12.000]
7 or 10 I can't remember now. It was a while ago.

[00:07:15.000]
1st grade teachers, and we all did penguins from Michigan. So I had to create my own library of books because the students just devoured everything, and I did not have.

[00:07:25.000]
Access to Gale In context. Elementary as you all do. I wish I would have, because parents were trying to find information online, and it was not.

[00:07:35.000]
Age appropriate or not only that, but their reading level. And here in Gale In context, elementary, you will find great reading content at their level, you'll find a visual topic tree which really helps students find content related to their search so they can use this topic tree to drill down and use the images there to help find content.

[00:07:57.000]
We also have rich content here in the subject categories right from the homepage. So you do have a collection of ebooks available from the Washington State Library and their Gale ebooks, and they are already loaded here in gale and context, elementary. So we integrated a couple of years ago. We integrated that.

[00:08:18.000]
Capability within this resource to pull in all of the ebook content within the collection. Now, if you have more at your own library, if you have a larger K. 5 collection that you've purchased from Gale on top of what the Washington State Library provides, then you'll have all of those ebooks in this one spot.

[00:08:38.000]
So again, it makes it really simple for students to access that ebook collection. But also those ebooks will show up in search results.

[00:08:45.000]
So if they're going through the topic pages, or if they're just doing a search.

[00:08:50.000]
If there's an ebook that relates to that topic, it'll show up in their search results.

[00:08:56.000]
Our news from publications is designed and written for kids. We also, this is where we have all of our fun. Facts for the month live under the news category.

[00:09:07.000]
Under pictures. You're going to find great pictures that really enhance research and presentation skills. We pulled these out and put them on the homepage because it was a request that teachers were making because students were looking for pictures for their projects. And I get asked often, can they can students use these in their projects. Maybe they're creating a poster. Can they use these pictures absolutely? They're not for publication purposes.

[00:09:30.000]
But they can use them for their projects, for their.

[00:09:33.000]
Research paper. They're working on the classroom or teachers to help them with instruction. Pictures are a great way to pull.

[00:09:41.000]
Students in. Maybe you're creating tech sets, or you're looking at project learning. And you want to use pictures. For that inquiry or project based learning. They're a great tool to use for all of those things. And then same with the videos, really, furthering that engagement with young learners. They're also great, for brain breaks.

[00:10:03.000]
And again, tech sets. I love to pull videos into tech sets and project based learning, too, because it really gets that buy in from students that video and all of our videos have transcripts available. And you'll find close captioning on there, too.

[00:10:21.000]
So let's talk a little bit about our topic, our subject categories, and our topic tree. These.

[00:10:27.000]
Topic. Trees help students drill down to a topic overview page and they'll find the ability to this area here will provide a high level overview of the topic. So I can go back to all topics. But we're talking about animals.

[00:10:43.000]
I also have the visual topic tree which I've talked about. It really makes it easy for our students to explore topics.

[00:10:50.000]
And then, once they do select a topic, the topic page.

[00:10:55.000]
Then takes them to all of the content that's been curated for them on that particular topic. So it's a high, level overview of the topic. You see an image. And this overview right at the top of the page. And our overviews are at 2 different reading levels. So we have actually 5 content levels available.

[00:11:17.000]
Elementary is primarily level. One and level 2.

[00:11:22.000]
I always tell folks. If you remember, middle school is level 3. Everything above is high school and up to undergrad, and then everything below that level 3 is elementary. It keeps it really simple.

[00:11:35.000]
But now, will you find some higher level content? We get that question a lot. Yes, you absolutely will find some higher level reading levels available in Gale In context, elementary. And sometimes it's just a word that brings that up to the next reading level. Other times. It is. Add a little bit higher reading level, because we know. And I know, as a former teacher, I had students that were reading at a 5th grade level.

[00:11:59.000]
In my 1st grade class, so.

[00:12:02.000]
I needed to find content that they could read to challenge themselves, but also was always checking for comprehension. Because that's you know, that's this the area? They can read the words, but are they truly comprehending? So.

[00:12:16.000]
Keep that in mind that that's an opportunity here in your Gale In Gale In context, elementary resource.

[00:12:22.000]
On the topic pages. You'll also find quick facts here in the center which are ready to use information on that topic.

[00:12:31.000]
When I click into, and this.

[00:12:33.000]
One of the topic overviews that we have for the subject of.

[00:12:38.000]
You can see the breadcrumb trail here we went to animals and then fish and sea creatures, and then landed in the topic of sharks. And this is the overview. You can see what I mentioned the level one and level 2, so I can in real time change it to a level 2, and this is on.

[00:12:57.000]
Sorry about that. This is on, Gale, published content. It's not on every single document, because some of our documents are coming from magazines or newspapers.

[00:13:07.000]
They might be referenced.

[00:13:09.000]
So the but it's on information that we published at Gale that we're able to change that reading level and change the text that they're seeing.

[00:13:19.000]
To a lower or higher reading level.

[00:13:22.000]
So you will find these content levels. They are related to lexile measure. I'll share that with you, but it's a great way to differentiate instruction.

[00:13:34.000]
By using these level topic overviews.

[00:13:38.000]
You'll also find the highlights and notes feature here at the.

[00:13:42.000]
And I'll talk to you about different ways that this can be used with students. It really does allow for that annotation and the ability to track questions and ideas within a document.

[00:13:55.000]
And then we have our tools to support accessibility, such as listen to and translate articles. We are actually over. We're at 57, so we say, over 40 languages, but we're at 57 languages that you can translate the text to on the screen and have it read aloud to you now the read aloud, we are at.

[00:14:16.000]
25 languages.

[00:14:19.000]
But the text.

[00:14:21.000]
Translation. We're at 57, so a little bit different there. But the the 25 that you're listening to that you can listen Spanish.

[00:14:30.000]
It is 25 of the most used languages that you're going to find there.

[00:14:35.000]
Alright. A few other tools I want to share with you, and then we are going to jump into the resource itself.

[00:14:41.000]
You do have the ability to share content. You can use the get link, tool.

[00:14:46.000]
You can share directly to Google classroom.

[00:14:48.000]
Or you can send to using. You can send it to directly to Google, Drive or Microsoft onedrive. So if I'm interested in an article, and I want to send it to my Google drive. I can do that.

[00:15:01.000]
And it land right into my Google drive. And I'll model that for you today.

[00:15:06.000]
To support accessible learning. I mentioned a few of these. Already we have the translate feature. You have the ability to change the font size, the listen feature, and then display options allows you to customize the text even further by choosing a font.

[00:15:21.000]
And also increasing the line, letter and word.

[00:15:25.000]
Changing the color behind the text, too.

[00:15:28.000]
To encourage analysis. I talked a little bit about highlights and notes. It really does help promote that deeper learning and allows the ability to color code and annotate.

[00:15:37.000]
And then to develop research skills. The topic I mentioned the topic pages and we have the citation tool citations are automatically attached to everything you're going to find within your gale resources.

[00:15:49.000]
But you also have the citation tool separate. So if you're using easy bib or noodle tools, or just Google, and you want to export just the citation. You can do that, too.

[00:16:01.000]
If you are using a learning management system like canvas or schoology, we are integrated, or can, I should say, can be integrated into those learning management systems.

[00:16:11.000]
Which, once we are, it makes it really easy to embed articles or add a link directly into an assignment, a discussion, a page. So it's a great way to meet students where they're learning and help teachers utilize the information in your digital resources.

[00:16:27.000]
By simply grabbing that information and putting it right into embedding it right into an assignment.

[00:16:34.000]
So. If this is something that you're interested in our customer success managers can help with that process.

[00:16:40.000]
And I'll provide their information at the end of today's training.

[00:16:47.000]
Alright. So let's jump into. We're gonna come back to support at the end. So let's jump into.

[00:16:53.000]
Gale In contacts elementary. Please let me know if you have any questions. The QA. Box is open.

[00:17:02.000]
Gale and contacts elementary a few things up at the top. I want to point out first.st

[00:17:06.000]
You do have the ability to translate these navigational tools. So if I wanted to translate my navigational tools into Italian.

[00:17:17.000]
I just select Italian. And now all of my.

[00:17:20.000]
To work through the resource, have been translated.

[00:17:27.000]
I can go back to English.

[00:17:31.000]
There we go, and they go right back to English.

[00:17:33.000]
I have the ability to sign into Google or Microsoft. I did sign into Google, and I am set up as a teacher. So Google classroom is here at any time. If I want to put information directly into my Google classroom.

[00:17:46.000]
Once I sign in, I can select the little green icon and put information directly into Google classroom.

[00:17:53.000]
Using the QA. Could folks, could you just let me know.

[00:17:57.000]
If you are using.

[00:17:59.000]
Google classroom or Microsoft onedrive what you're using in your buildings. That would be great. I'd love to get your feedback on that. So I can make sure that I'm customizing this for you all.

[00:18:11.000]
We also have our basic search and advanced search.

[00:18:14.000]
I will say almost 100 of the time. According to our analytics.

[00:18:19.000]
Students are pointing and clicking at this age. So kindergarten through 5th grade, they're mainly pointing and clicking. So they're using our topic here below to find content, or going right into an eye, wonder, question, or jumping into any of these.

[00:18:32.000]
Content types. Here at the top.

[00:18:35.000]
I do have the ability. I'm gonna point out a few things in our contextual toolbar here. So I have the ability to toggle the sound on and off.

[00:18:43.000]
I have the ability to browse through all of my topics which this might be helpful for teachers.

[00:18:49.000]
I would suggest for students utilizing our topic. It's very visual and user friendly for kindergarten through 5th grade.

[00:18:56.000]
Title list is here. If you need that, libraries are needing that more and more. So you'll find the title list.

[00:19:02.000]
For you'll need to go to Gale and Context elementary to find that information. Once you open that.

[00:19:08.000]
Search history is session based.

[00:19:10.000]
And then we have the get link, tool and highlights and notes.

[00:19:14.000]
Get link provides a persistent URL back to any spot within the resource, and highlights and notes. As that feature I mentioned to you, great for annotating content. And I'll model this for you today. So it looks like we have some Google classroom folks. Google drive one Microsoft.

[00:19:30.000]
Onedrive schoology for K. 2 seesaw.

[00:19:34.000]
So, Joanne, thanks for sharing that.

[00:19:36.000]
I will share with seesaw.

[00:19:38.000]
Using our get link tool is going to be helpful for teachers to link out content.

[00:19:45.000]
So keep that in mind. When I talk about get Link. You might want to share that for your kindergarten through second grade teachers that are using seesaw. I have a friend who's a kindergarten teacher, and we talked a lot about seesaw. I picked her brain and discovered that. Yes, the get link tool is going to be the best solution for those folks, and she uses it in her seesaw with her students all the time.

[00:20:08.000]
Especially during Covid. She used it a ton, so.

[00:20:12.000]
Onedrive and Google drive.

[00:20:15.000]
Work the same. So I will model drive today. But just know that, Microsoft Onedrive. I'll show you where that tool is, but it works the same where, when I put information into Microsoft onedrive, it turns it into a word document.

[00:20:29.000]
So keep that in mind. But thank you all for responding so quickly in the Q. And a. I.

[00:20:36.000]
And I'm just going to mark all these real quick.

[00:20:43.000]
And again, if you have any questions, that's where you.

[00:20:48.000]
Can ask. There we go.

[00:20:51.000]
Okay. Now it's all cleaned up.

[00:20:53.000]
So we were talking about the talked about the contextual toolbar. Now let's go into these content types. Topics are where we're at. Here's my, I wonder. Question I can. And actually.

[00:21:07.000]
We share say, these are updated daily. Every time I come in here today, I wonder question will change for me.

[00:21:13.000]
So keep that in mind. I can go to a new question, or I can find out more information on what is another name for meteor. Before I move on, I want to toggle the sound on so that I can model this for you, so I can just simply toggle the sound on.

[00:21:29.000]
And now where I move my cursor.

[00:21:31.000]
Pictures. I wonder.

[00:21:34.000]
What is another name for a meteor.

[00:21:36.000]
News.

[00:21:39.000]
You can see it'll help me navigate through the resource. Now this is separate than our listen, Button.

[00:21:43.000]
Videos.

[00:21:44.000]
Our listen. Button will read the entire document. But this is really a great navigational tool for students.

[00:21:52.000]
So we'll come back to topics in a moment. I want to touch into each of these content types.

[00:21:57.000]
Books you're going to find that you have a bookshelf or the books that the Washington State Library has purchased. You may have additional ebooks that you've purchased for your own library, or maybe your district.

[00:22:11.000]
I know our public libraries in Washington do a lot of purchasing, and if you purchase K. 5 titles.

[00:22:16.000]
They will be here.

[00:22:18.000]
In Gale and contacts elementary, but they will also live in gale books. So I'm not covering Gale ebooks separately, because we're focusing on this resource and.

[00:22:29.000]
Your students or the users at this level will primarily be using Gael and context elementary. But I wanted to let you know that they will still live in your Gale ebooks, platform.

[00:22:41.000]
Science section. Here you have great books, and we're gonna talk about plants today.

[00:22:47.000]
And you do have some social science here at the bottom.

[00:22:52.000]
When you do select an ebook and let's go into what is soccer.

[00:22:58.000]
When I click on that title.

[00:23:01.000]
I want to talk a little bit about what the ebooks look like. So you get this great Pdf of the Ebook itself. It jumps over those title pages.

[00:23:11.000]
So the cover, the title page. It takes users right into the content which is really helpful for our younger users.

[00:23:18.000]
You have. Tab the these arrows on the left and right, where students can simply tap or swipe, depending on what type of device we're at. They're on. We are mobile, responsive, but they can tap or swipe, and they can turn the page.

[00:23:31.000]
You can also do a couple of things I could zoom in.

[00:23:34.000]
So if I wanted to. This is really helpful.

[00:23:37.000]
If some of the content is smaller. And I want to focus on some of this reading with, maybe I'm sharing this with the whole class. And we're reading this together.

[00:23:46.000]
Or zoom back out. I can make this whole screen.

[00:23:51.000]
So again, if I'm sharing this, or if I'm putting this on my projector or smart board, this is a great way to share content and read as a whole group, or for a guided reading lesson.

[00:24:02.000]
Again. I can tap or swipe, and it'll take me to that next page.

[00:24:07.000]
I can minimize this.

[00:24:09.000]
And I can listen to the text being read aloud.

[00:24:12.000]
Now in this feature for our ebooks. If the book is in English as this one is, it will read that text in English.

[00:24:21.000]
Now I'm going to share with you another feature for the ebooks. But this is.

[00:24:25.000]
Now this listen feature is available in Gale. We did add it for our ebooks in this platform.

[00:24:33.000]
For our younger users. And I say that because.

[00:24:38.000]
If you are on the we call this the book view. If you're on the book view in, say, Gale ebooks, and you're accessing a book. You're not going to find this. Listen feature there. You actually have to be in.

[00:24:50.000]
Over here to the right, the text view, and I'll show that to you in a moment. But for elementary for this individual resource, we were able to add this, listen, feature.

[00:25:00.000]
When you are on the book view, because we know that our younger users need this feature.

[00:25:06.000]
And so that's why. And it I know it takes. There's a lot more work that is involved. And that's why it's available here in only this resource. So I'm gonna click, listen. So you can hear that content being read aloud.

[00:25:18.000]
And it takes a couple seconds to load our new read speakers takes a couple seconds to load.

[00:25:25.000]
Field and equipment.

[00:25:27.000]
For international soccer matches. The field should be 110 to 130 yards long and 70 to 80 yards wide.

[00:25:35.000]
Okay. I paused it. Now, if you notice at the bottom.

[00:25:39.000]
I had this text box pop up, and what that was is, I had the enlarge turned on from a training that I did on Friday, and my computer cookied it because I don't always turn my computer off. I just put it to sleep.

[00:25:54.000]
So I was in Tennessee doing a training, and I apparently left that on. So it really cookies that and saves that. So keep that in mind. If you're ever doing training that if you turn that feature on so under after I open the listen, button.

[00:26:08.000]
And I click on the more I have that ability to enlarge the text.

[00:26:13.000]
And I especially love this when I'm on a document in the ebooks. I love to take a look at the ebook itself.

[00:26:21.000]
And so do our users. So I'll come back to this feature when I talk about the tools to support accessibility. A little deeper dive when we go into a text document.

[00:26:31.000]
But I just wanted to point out. That's what I turned off real quick, so that if you saw it there and it went away. That's what I was doing. But I'll model that for you in a moment.

[00:26:39.000]
I'm gonna close that box out. I just wanted to show that feature. And then I talked about text view.

[00:26:45.000]
So text view, when I click into it, will give me the text view of this ebook.

[00:26:52.000]
That takes me to each page. But it's just the text view. If there's any images you can see them here.

[00:27:01.000]
And again, it's bookview or text view. When you click on the cover of the book, it automatically takes users right into the bookview.

[00:27:11.000]
I have a few other features on the left hand side here, like the table of contents.

[00:27:16.000]
I can search for a word or term.

[00:27:20.000]
I have the dictionary.

[00:27:23.000]
This is additional books from this particular bookshelf.

[00:27:27.000]
And then the full citation.

[00:27:31.000]
Let's go back to that homepage.

[00:27:35.000]
Now let's talk about news. Please let me know if you have any questions. My student yesterday was very upset.

[00:27:42.000]
A season's entry was a year old. Jody, I will take a look at that and reach out to our content. Editors that work on this product.

[00:27:52.000]
Let me know if it's an ebook. Those are.

[00:27:56.000]
Just like a book off the library shelf there, as you know, you purchase them. They have a copyright year.

[00:28:02.000]
They're the same idea. So if it was an ebook that.

[00:28:05.000]
Could have been. Why? Because it's an it's just like a print book. It's just being offered in a digital format. If it's on the resource itself. Let me know because I will. This is great. Thank you for sharing that. I'll take it back to our content team and let them know that. We and we try to stay up to date, you know, with information being added every day throughout the day.

[00:28:30.000]
But sometimes some things fall through the crack, so it depends on what he was on when he was doing. He or she.

[00:28:36.000]
I don't know if you said my student, you said so. He or she was upset. That what they what they were on. If they're on a reference document as compared to a news or a magazines.

[00:28:47.000]
The topic. Page. Okay, so that would be us. Thank you for sharing that. I will take that information back to our content team and make sure that we get some information updated there.

[00:29:00.000]
But that so the the.

[00:29:02.000]
Topic pages is information we update. And I'm writing that down right now.

[00:29:08.000]
And we do have.

[00:29:11.000]
A team that works on that, and I'll bring it to their attention.

[00:29:15.000]
So I know. Sometimes, like with the hurricane, their attention is moved somewhere else. So maybe that was on their, you know, they might have a list that they're working through. But when events like that happen, they do kind of shift and have to focus on, you know, things like the hurricane and updating that information. But.

[00:29:34.000]
Still always important to have up to date information. So thank you for telling me that.

[00:29:39.000]
All right. We're going to talk about news.

[00:29:42.000]
And again, news articles are here at the top, and I mentioned, we have our fun facts. This is where they live.

[00:29:49.000]
This is also a really great place. If you are in those situations where you have a.

[00:29:56.000]
Group of students that are trying to log in to the resources. Hopefully, you have a very simple.

[00:30:02.000]
Sign on to your resources. Your Gale resources from the Washington State Library.

[00:30:07.000]
But I always like to direct my students somewhere while I'm helping those that need it a little bit more.

[00:30:13.000]
Support, and this is a great place where they can come in and look at any of the fun facts for October.

[00:30:21.000]
And don't forget they can toggle that sound on and off. So if this is a little bit higher reading level, they can have it read aloud to them.

[00:30:29.000]
So Epcot Center opened on October first.st

[00:30:33.000]
Oh, I didn't know that.

[00:30:36.000]
What world farm animals day is tomorrow. I always learned something new when I come in here. It's always so fun to take a look at.

[00:30:43.000]
What has been happening world space week. That would be fun to do for the 4th through the 10.th

[00:30:49.000]
Okay, so and then, of course, I can click in to find out more about that information.

[00:30:54.000]
Pictures are here and I can. Now you're seeing we've been adding more recently. We've been adding a lot of infographics and timelines. I usually don't see this many in my results. So we obviously have been. This is where we've been concentrating some of our time adding this information.

[00:31:14.000]
But you will find this is one of my favorites. Best breeds for service dogs. This type of content.

[00:31:20.000]
Available. Students love to learn about cats and dogs.

[00:31:25.000]
But you'll also find. Let me do a quick search on. Let's say lifecycles.

[00:31:34.000]
These types of images.

[00:31:36.000]
My spiders are so focused for life cycles. I just spiders. Just give me the Heebie's, but.

[00:31:42.000]
This one especially. I don't know I and it's always there. Just the the thought of a nest of baby blueed tarantulas in one spot like that.

[00:31:52.000]
But the images are so great. That's why I always show it, even though.

[00:31:57.000]
Drives me a little crazy. We could do water cycle. This I want to share with you something else that you're going to find.

[00:32:04.000]
So with the water cycle, we have a lot of labeled and unlabeled illustrations available.

[00:32:10.000]
And you're going to find this type of content also. And I love these because the unlabeled.

[00:32:17.000]
I had a teacher share with me that they were going to pull this into.

[00:32:22.000]
I think, she said, Google, draw and create a word bank cause it's all right here. Can you identify? So here's your word bank. So she was going to use it as a student activity and just create a word bank and add, you know, a place for students to write their name, and she had an activity ready to go.

[00:32:39.000]
Which was a very creative idea. But we do have these and unlabeled images available.

[00:32:45.000]
And if there's a labeled image, you're going to find an unlabeled image and.

[00:32:50.000]
Vice versa. So sometimes what I'll say to do is, Do a quick search on unlabeled here.

[00:32:56.000]
Let me show you real quick. This is a tip and trick.

[00:33:00.000]
And you're going to find all of our unlabeled images. So I just did a basic search on unlabeled. And again, if you're seeing an unlabeled image.

[00:33:09.000]
We have the counterpart. We have the labeled also.

[00:33:12.000]
So great way to teach and check for understanding.

[00:33:16.000]
Using your resources.

[00:33:20.000]
So great content in the pictures as you could see. I shared infographics. We also have timelines, those images from the life cycles, and labeled and unlabeled diagrams or images available. And then on our video content, you're going to see some of these are short and some are actually a little bit longer. So let's check with life cycle.

[00:33:45.000]
And you can see some of the what is a life cycle. This one's a little bit longer.

[00:33:50.000]
What is a life cycle here? Life, cycle of a monarch, butterfly, plant, lifecycle, animal life, cycle, insect life cycle. So we've got some pretty specific information there, and they do.

[00:34:03.000]
Come with a transcript.

[00:34:06.000]
And closed captioning, closed captioning is here where I can turn that on or off.

[00:34:10.000]
If I need to translate.

[00:34:13.000]
I can translate the transcript. It does not translate our closed captioning or the video, but it does translate the transcript.

[00:34:23.000]
Alright. Now that I've covered the main groups of the content types there, let's dive into specific content.

[00:34:31.000]
So we have. Let's go directly to plants. Now, animals, I just want to point out again. I shared this in the Powerpoint High Level information.

[00:34:40.000]
If I go to mammals I can see again high level piece of information. But we have all of these great topic pages.

[00:34:47.000]
That I can quickly jump to cats and dogs. They're always number one or number 2.

[00:34:52.000]
For usage. In this resource.

[00:34:56.000]
And then below. We have some that don't have images, but still have topic pages, and you can see the eye. Wonder. Questions are related to animals.

[00:35:04.000]
So they change.

[00:35:07.000]
We're going to go into plants today.

[00:35:10.000]
Because you have a great.

[00:35:13.000]
Ebook, Available.

[00:35:27.000]
Okay. Erna, thank you for this comment. I'm gonna read through it. I'll come to it at the end of today's training.

[00:35:35.000]
As you've left me a lot of great feedback there. Thank you.

[00:35:38.000]
And I can take that, too, to our product team.

[00:35:41.000]
Okay, looking at plants, we have types of plants.

[00:35:47.000]
And we're going to drill down again into types of plants.

[00:35:53.000]
And you can see here we have the image and essay overview. We have quick facts in the center of the page. And this is a topic page.

[00:36:01.000]
We have book articles. These are coming more from either our publications or reference content.

[00:36:07.000]
These are exactly that book articles where books, this is your ebook collection. So this is really this depends on what either you have at your library, your gale ebooks, or the Washington State Library, has purchased.

[00:36:20.000]
If you don't see anything in your results, it just means that you don't have a book related to that topic.

[00:36:25.000]
Magazine news biographies. We have pictures available, and then any related topic pages will be at the bottom.

[00:36:35.000]
The essay an image and essay overview or topic overview.

[00:36:40.000]
I'm on a level one. We have words to know available.

[00:36:44.000]
Types of plants, vascular plants. And then, if I go into a level 2, my image actually changes.

[00:36:52.000]
And sometimes in this case it did.

[00:36:54.000]
Instead of words to know I have main ideas. This is more of that upper elementary.

[00:36:59.000]
Reading levels. So level one lower elementary level, 2 upper elementary. And you can see if I put my cursor over top. It tells me the lexile measure, but also over here. This little information icon.

[00:37:14.000]
Will also tell me the Lexo level.

[00:37:16.000]
We hid that because teachers asked for it to be hidden.

[00:37:19.000]
It took up some real estate at the top, so they asked us to hide it. So we did. It's always underneath that information. Icon.

[00:37:27.000]
If I go to level one.

[00:37:31.000]
It has. It's at a 4 80, and I can jump back and forth this way, too.

[00:37:36.000]
Okay, so let's talk about some tools to support accessibility.

[00:37:40.000]
I have the listen feature where I can listen to the text being read aloud to me as I shared with you before.

[00:37:46.000]
In the ebook format. Same thing.

[00:37:49.000]
And it's loading.

[00:37:51.000]
Types of plants.

[00:37:52.000]
What I can also do.

[00:37:55.000]
Is, I can turn on.

[00:37:56.000]
Roses are a type of flowering plant.

[00:37:57.000]
Me pause. It.

[00:37:58.000]
Roses are a type of flowering plant.

[00:38:00.000]
Okay, so it's going to automatically scroll down the page. I turned on the enhanced or the we used to call enhanced text visibility. It's now called enlarge.

[00:38:11.000]
And what it does is it pulls that text box onto the page, which is great for emergent readers. So it's a great tool to use for your students.

[00:38:19.000]
Pulls that text out to the onto the page, and it highlights.

[00:38:22.000]
The text as it's reading it allowed.

[00:38:27.000]
Copyrights, Siri Iber Co.

[00:38:29.000]
Words, to know, absorb.

[00:38:32.000]
Taken, cones.

[00:38:35.000]
A large seed.

[00:38:36.000]
Now this one, you know, when you have articles that start with started with an image, and then goes into a text feature and then goes into the text.

[00:38:45.000]
It's great to see this, how it works, too, when you're on a document. That's just text at the top. But the our overviews always have an image and.

[00:38:55.000]
Sometimes like, I said. In this resource we have a lot of great textures, too.

[00:39:00.000]
So I can enlarge this text at the bottom or decrease it.

[00:39:05.000]
Depending on what I need.

[00:39:07.000]
I can also decrease or increase the volume here.

[00:39:11.000]
And there's also additional features under settings.

[00:39:17.000]
Where I can choose what's being highlighted. The word sentence, color, text color. All those features are available.

[00:39:25.000]
Here on when I open up that box.

[00:39:28.000]
That settings box. I can also download it as an Mp. 3.

[00:39:33.000]
A few other features I have available is the ability to decrease or increase the font size. As you could see, the roses got a little larger. There.

[00:39:42.000]
Translate the text into over 57 languages.

[00:39:47.000]
If I choose Spanish.

[00:39:51.000]
It asked me if I want to complete the translation. We do this because students are curious, and they like to see different languages. So we want to make sure. Do they really want to translate the entire article? So once I complete the translation, then all of my accessibility tools will pop back up here. But you it does give you a sample first.st

[00:40:13.000]
And don't forget I really enlarge that text.

[00:40:16.000]
Let me cancel that. So I really enlarge the.

[00:40:20.000]
I can make it smaller. There, that text.

[00:40:22.000]
And then the display options.

[00:40:25.000]
This gives me the ability to change the color behind the.

[00:40:29.000]
Change the font if I want open dyslexic, or if I need line, letter, and wordpacing increased.

[00:40:36.000]
It will do exactly that.

[00:40:38.000]
And this will stick with me. Go back.

[00:40:42.000]
It'll stick with me, no matter where I'm at. Within the.

[00:40:46.000]
So if I go into book articles, and maybe I'm looking at drought.

[00:40:51.000]
You can see it's stuck with me.

[00:40:54.000]
So once you set it up on the 1st one.

[00:40:57.000]
The 1st article. It'll stay with you throughout your session when I close out. It would.

[00:41:01.000]
Go away.

[00:41:05.000]
Get link provides a link back to any spot within the resource. So oh! And to remove that, I open display options back up, and I click in the bottom, left back to default settings.

[00:41:17.000]
Any spot within the resource. So if I wanted to share a topic page, I could use the get link tool.

[00:41:23.000]
Or if I'm using Google classroom, I just open up Google classroom.

[00:41:28.000]
Choose a class I'd like to share it to, or.

[00:41:32.000]
Add a class.

[00:41:34.000]
An action. Maybe I want to make an announcement.

[00:41:37.000]
Click! Go! Here's my announcement.

[00:41:47.000]
To view it. I just click, view.

[00:41:51.000]
And here's my types of plants.

[00:41:56.000]
Takes a couple seconds, and there it is, loaded.

[00:41:58.000]
And I'll take my students right back to that topic page. Now, I can do this at multiple levels so I could do it from a topic page I could go into. Let's say book articles.

[00:42:10.000]
And I want to filter this content down.

[00:42:15.000]
Which my.

[00:42:18.000]
My filter box is not showing up here. That's odd.

[00:42:22.000]
Sometimes zoom really messes with my resource, and it's kind of infuriating.

[00:42:29.000]
Me go back, out.

[00:42:31.000]
Actually, I'm gonna go back out to the homepage. I'm gonna go to cats and dogs.

[00:42:37.000]
See if it's gonna glitch for me there. Sometimes when I go back out, it helps.

[00:42:44.000]
Let's go and book articles.

[00:42:47.000]
Yeah, I should be seeing my filter box here. Well, that's frustrating.

[00:42:51.000]
I apologize. I'm not sure why.

[00:42:56.000]
Huh!

[00:43:00.000]
Wonder why it's not showing up. Okay.

[00:43:02.000]
I have to test it after I'm out of zoom, and see.

[00:43:05.000]
If zoom was a problem which 9 times out of 10 it is, and I apologize for that.

[00:43:10.000]
But I do typically have a filter. Oh, here, down here, see, it should be up here. That's really weird.

[00:43:16.000]
Filter. Here results. Let me see if I decrease.

[00:43:21.000]
Nope, okay, something's going on with Zoom.

[00:43:24.000]
I can filter my results.

[00:43:28.000]
Just be in.

[00:43:31.000]
Try it here. Did it show up down below.

[00:43:33.000]
Yeah, it should be up higher.

[00:43:35.000]
Filter my results where I can filter by.

[00:43:41.000]
Publication, date, subject, type.

[00:43:44.000]
Publication title, my Content level search within. So if I did want to filter and I want, let's say I want my level twos and threes. This is for. And I and I want to challenge my students. I do have students at a higher reading level. And I want to apply that.

[00:44:01.000]
I can pull this content into Google classroom or use my get link tool here also.

[00:44:07.000]
And don't forget. Link provides a persistent URL back to any spot within the resource.

[00:44:12.000]
And I apologize that it's showing up there.

[00:44:15.000]
Below, but it does filter all of my content at once.

[00:44:24.000]
Let me go back to few other things I need to cover. I will stay on. I saw another question come through. I will stay on at the end and model that for you real quick. But I do need to cover a few other items before I go back to those questions.

[00:44:36.000]
So I wanna make sure everything is covered today. So I did.

[00:44:41.000]
I did sign in with Google if I wanted to send a document, let's say I wanted to send this dog document directly to my Google drive.

[00:44:52.000]
I can use the send to option this paper airplane.

[00:44:56.000]
And choose to send it to Google.

[00:44:58.000]
Microsoft email. I also can download or print this information off.

[00:45:03.000]
If I send it to my Google drive, what'll happen is a folder. Titled elementary will be created.

[00:45:11.000]
Or if I have one there in my case, I do.

[00:45:14.000]
It will just be added to that folder titled contacts elementary. And I have this complete document about dogs.

[00:45:21.000]
If I wanted to highlight text, I can click and drag over a chunk of text.

[00:45:26.000]
Choose my color.

[00:45:28.000]
Add whatever notes I want.

[00:45:30.000]
Save that information. Now, I can send this marked up document to my Google drive.

[00:45:36.000]
If there's a word I'm struggling with.

[00:45:39.000]
I can click and drag over that word, and there's a little define.

[00:45:42.000]
Button here, and it'll give me a page out of the Webster's Children's, Webster's Dictionary, the Elementary.

[00:45:52.000]
So I can send my marked up document to my Google drive when students are annotating. I'm great if you're teaching. This is a great Mini lesson, too. You're treating research skills using that highlights and notes feature, having students look for main ideas. Or maybe they're looking for information for the body.

[00:46:10.000]
Or the opening, the body, and the conclusion of a paper.

[00:46:13.000]
And maybe it's a argumentative essay or an even just a.

[00:46:18.000]
Project based learning document that they're creating. This is a great way, great tool to use within this resource. And again, they can send this entire marked up document. Best practice.

[00:46:29.000]
They've marked up this document. They want to keep it. Send the entire document to their Google, drive.

[00:46:35.000]
All right. We're right at the end of our time here. In fact, we're a couple minutes over, so let me go back to.

[00:46:41.000]
My Powerpoint, where you can go for additional support.

[00:46:45.000]
Again I shared that link in the chat, those watching the recording. It's here at the top. This is where you're going to find all of your direct Urls. Your mark records your in the training center. You'll find tip sheets and tutorials. We've added training tool kits.

[00:47:00.000]
Which take you through what you need for Gale and contacts elementary to train on it from Powerpoint slides to just webinars and additional activities and information tip sheets that we have. We've curated our training materials into a toolkit or a click sheet.

[00:47:17.000]
We also have lesson plans and projects.

[00:47:20.000]
So many student activities. We have escape rooms. Here's question of the week that I've pulled out. We have an escape rooms available.

[00:47:27.000]
And scavenger hunts and then marketing materials. You're going to find bookmarks and posters. There's great email templates, blog templates, social media posts every shape and size, as you can see. I pulled one out here, too, that you can utilize on your library website or any type of social media that you're using to share information with your library community.

[00:47:49.000]
And that wraps our session. A survey should pop up when you leave today. If you could click, continue, and give us some feedback, I would appreciate it. I do share that.

[00:47:57.000]
With our folks at the Washington State Library. So please let us know in that comment section again. My name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer at gale and customer success managers. This will be in your follow up email. But if you would like to take a screenshot of this.

[00:48:12.000]
And you'd like to reach out to them for that one on one support. I talked about them at the beginning of today's training your Gale customer success. Managers are there for your support. Tech support is also here, and then that Gale support site that I've shared with you.

[00:48:26.000]
So I thank you all for your time today.

[00:48:30.000]
I will answer these last questions that just came through.

[00:48:33.000]
But thanks everyone, and have a great rest of your day.

[00:48:37.000]
Okay. So, Erna, you had asked, can you change the text color? Let me go back. I'll share my screen again.

[00:48:46.000]
And let me pick a document. That is.

[00:48:50.000]
Let's go back here. I'm gonna pick like a magazine document. Usually we have.

[00:48:55.000]
There we go. This might be a little bit so.

[00:48:58.000]
You wanted me to change.

[00:49:01.000]
Okay, not the display options you were asking in the listen feature.

[00:49:06.000]
Under settings. Let me pause this.

[00:49:08.000]
I think that's what you were talking about.

[00:49:10.000]
Changing the text color. Let's try it.

[00:49:13.000]
And done it this, since we had the new text feature.

[00:49:19.000]
Not seeing a big difference. Maybe I need to choose a different color. Hold on.

[00:49:25.000]
Let's choose. Gosh! Yellow would be horrible!

[00:49:28.000]
Let's try light blue.

[00:49:35.000]
It's not doing in the way I thought it would.

[00:49:39.000]
So we just updated this recently and.

[00:49:42.000]
Word. Oh, that's the hold on.

[00:49:45.000]
I know what it's doing.

[00:49:47.000]
Let's do this. I have to click, play.

[00:49:50.000]
There we go!

[00:49:51.000]
Rewarding helpful dogs.

[00:49:52.000]
So you can see it changes the color down here below.

[00:49:56.000]
Not the color in the document.

[00:49:59.000]
Let me see if I turn off the enhanced text or the enlarge. See what happens there.

[00:50:06.000]
Yeah.

[00:50:07.000]
In this issue, rewarding helpful dogs.

[00:50:09.000]
So.

[00:50:12.000]
Settings. Let's try another color. Let's do this darker blue.

[00:50:16.000]
So you can see that looks a little bit better.

[00:50:21.000]
There you go!

[00:50:22.000]
The Kennel Club, the Uk's largest organization dedicated to.

[00:50:24.000]
So that's what it would look like.

[00:50:26.000]
So if I change now again, I can change the what the word and color are being highlighted in. We have blues and greens, those are the ones that are seen. Be able to see the most.

[00:50:36.000]
By most users. That's why we selected them similar to overlays. I don't know if any of your.

[00:50:42.000]
Schools use overlays with, especially with dyslexic students. That's the blues and greens are similar to what is used with students.

[00:50:50.000]
But that's what it would do when you click that. Listen, button. It would use that text color.

[00:50:57.000]
Alright thanks for asking that.

[00:51:01.000]
Or use the underlying feature. Let's try that.

[00:51:07.000]
I have sentence only word only.

[00:51:11.000]
Underline feature.

[00:51:13.000]
Do you mean the highlighting, the options, feature, anonymous attendee.

[00:51:22.000]
Let me know what you're asking there. I'm not really certain.

[00:51:27.000]
Okay.

[00:51:36.000]
Definitely. And then, Erna, I will follow up with you after you ask quite a few questions. There, sure, just some of these features trying to see. Oh, how would be using the classroom? Oh, I see. Yes, underline feature. Okay.

[00:51:47.000]
So it's just more of a comment. So let's see, underline.

[00:51:52.000]
I wonder if I have to turn this off first? st I haven't used this. This is again.

[00:51:57.000]
New senior trainer here been here 9 years.

[00:52:00.000]
This is a new feature to me, too.

[00:52:03.000]
Oh, there you go!

[00:52:04.000]
Is running its hero, dog awards 2,024, to celebrate the Uk's most life-changing canines.

[00:52:08.000]
The 4.

[00:52:09.000]
Now I might want to, because it is reading quite fast.

[00:52:12.000]
I might want to slow this down a little bit.

[00:52:14.000]
And I can do that here.

[00:52:17.000]
Let's.

[00:52:19.000]
Slow it down.

[00:52:21.000]
Now use that highlighting feature.

[00:52:24.000]
Or underline, but it.

[00:52:28.000]
Maybe let's do this. Let's underline the sentence and go back to the word.

[00:52:34.000]
See what that looks like.

[00:52:36.000]
It's fun!

[00:52:38.000]
Okay. Every time I change it, it's gotta reset itself.

[00:52:43.000]
Let's give it a second. Here.

[00:52:46.000]
Rewarding helpful dogs.

[00:52:48.000]
Oh, my goodness, that's slow!

[00:52:51.000]
Hold on! A second.

[00:52:53.000]
I used to. Really. Now you can like you would click slow, and it would read it that slow. Now you can.

[00:52:58.000]
Have. At least we have this range we can select from.

[00:53:02.000]
Let's try it again.

[00:53:13.000]
Okay? Good question. If you use these features. If you've made an a change.

[00:53:17.000]
Rewarding helpful dogs.

[00:53:19.000]
Okay, so that really slows it down.

[00:53:21.000]
In this issue.

[00:53:23.000]
The question is so, if we use these features in an article, and then send it to seesaw, or whatever these features will remain.

[00:53:30.000]
The features are in the resource itself.

[00:53:34.000]
So when you're sending the article.

[00:53:37.000]
Like, if you're using the get link tool, or you're sending it to cause you would use get link, and for seesaw.

[00:53:45.000]
Get. Link provides a persistent URL back to this article, but not to the settings themselves.

[00:53:51.000]
So it's it's not static.

[00:53:54.000]
It would have to be static. So basically that you want it that way. And here's why that get link tool.

[00:54:00.000]
Because when new content is added.

[00:54:03.000]
You're getting the newest content.

[00:54:05.000]
So no would it be? Would the link take you back to the settings that you've set up on the listen feature in the resource.

[00:54:14.000]
No, it wouldn't do that. You would have to set this up.

[00:54:19.000]
On the 1st document that students are accessing. I know you're looking for like a global solution for elementary. And I totally understand that? Why the question is asked, the way it is.

[00:54:29.000]
But yeah, it doesn't. It doesn't stick, doesn't stick to it that way, and that that functionality is.

[00:54:36.000]
Truly designed so that you are getting the most up to date information. Let's say you did link out a topic page. You would want.

[00:54:44.000]
The newest information that's available. Right? So that's why it's designed that way.

[00:54:50.000]
Yeah, thanks for asking about that. It's a good question.

[00:54:55.000]
And I will share these questions again with our product team. Because.

[00:55:00.000]
Sometimes it might trigger some additional ideas.

[00:55:03.000]
That like, oh, how could we maybe do something along these lines? And so I'll share that information with our product team. So thank you for asking.

[00:55:13.000]
I always like to say yes to everything.

[00:55:16.000]
So I'm still waiting on.

[00:55:20.000]
Yeah. So I answered those questions, okay, any other questions?

[00:55:29.000]
So we covered that. And I think that is.

[00:55:32.000]
Where all the questions I had. Thank you for asking.

[00:55:36.000]
Very specific questions about our tools and features. I love it.

[00:55:40.000]
If there's no other questions, go back to my Powerpoint, and again say.

[00:55:46.000]
Thank you for your time. I hope you join us again. We have additional training.

[00:55:51.000]
Tomorrow. Session is for our secondary folks.

[00:55:55.000]
And then college, and then we have one for public libraries. Next week.

[00:55:59.000]
So I thank you all for your time today.

[00:56:05.000]
And you're leaving more comments. So I'm gonna leave it open. I am gonna stop the recording, though. So thanks everyone for your time today, if you need to jump off, have a great rest of your day for the questions that are still coming in.

[00:56:15.000]
I am here and not leaving. Thanks, everyone.
