Duration: 15 Minutes
[00:00:02.000]
Welcome to your training for TexShare Public Libraries. Today's training is 15 minutes to mastery language learning made easy with Gale Presents: Udemy.
[00:00:10.000]
My name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer at Gale, and I thank you all for taking time out of your day
[00:00:17.000]
to join us for this short training session. Any questions that you have, please feel free to use the Q&A box.
[00:00:25.000]
We're going to our agenda, brief agenda, talk about Gale Presents You to me first, and then we are going to dive right into finding and how I want to share with you how easy it is to find those language learning classes and courses that are available.
[00:00:39.000]
Then I'll share with you some functionality of the resource. Always like to cover that too. Any questions that you have, please feel free to use that Q&A box and I will leave you.
[00:00:48.000]
At the end of today's training with contact information, my own, you have Gale customer success managers that are available to support you in all things Gale.
[00:00:57.000]
And that information will also be included in the follow-up email.
[00:01:00.000]
To access your text share resources if you are not using your direct URLs, you're going to find all of the direct URLs on the
[00:01:09.000]
TexShare support site that we've created along with training materials and marketing materials.
[00:01:15.000]
When you access that site, and I'm going to put that in the chat real quick so you all that are attending live have that.
[00:01:22.000]
I'll share it again at the end, the link at the end of today's training for those watching the recording.
[00:01:27.000]
But you have the support site. You would find your library name from the dropdown menu. You can see upcoming webinars we have here on the right-hand side.
[00:01:36.000]
And you can quickly jump to any of the categories that we have here below. Once you access or put in your library name.
[00:01:45.000]
All of your product URLs will show up there on the screen with your location ID built in.
[00:01:51.000]
So all of your usage will roll up. So anytime any of your patrons use any of your Gale resources, if you're using your direct links, usage will roll up to your account.
[00:02:01.000]
You can export all of those links over here to the right hand side and then of course access all of the additional
[00:02:07.000]
information that we have available, including those training
[00:02:12.000]
both the upcoming training sessions, the recorded ones that we've done for TexShare, and all the training materials for all of your individual resources that you have from TexShare and same with your marketing materials.
[00:02:23.000]
So all of that is available on that support site.
[00:02:27.000]
First, let's talk about Gale Presents Udemy.
[00:02:30.000]
And we are again focusing on language learning today, but I want to talk to you, share with some quick facts with you about Udemy.
[00:02:37.000]
65% of the course collection has been updated in the last two years. It's really ensuring that learners are developing skills in their most relevant areas.
[00:02:46.000]
We do have a learner first approach with this resource. It's sophisticated recommendations for engaged learning. So once you start selecting courses or enrolling in courses, you'll start seeing these recommended for you courses in the center of your page.
[00:03:01.000]
And you can see those ratings. It's just like when I read all the reviews when I do shopping on Amazon. I don't know if you all, I do the same thing with Udemy. I read the reviews.
[00:03:12.000]
And take a look at those courses that are highly reviewed. And that always helps.
[00:03:18.000]
when you're hearing information from a previous learner. And it also that learner first approach, view what to learn next, as I mentioned, but newest courses you'll also see and what's trending. There's over 45,000 courses
[00:03:33.000]
In 75 different categories available.
[00:03:37.000]
There's also an international collection, thousands of courses in 15 languages taught by subject matter experts in their native language.
[00:03:45.000]
We also have added Vietnamese. So you will find Vietnamese courses in Vietnamese available too. I know I just heard today that it's the
[00:03:54.000]
Of the languages spoken in Texas, it's number three on the list. So just know that that recently was added to the resource. So we just went from 14 to 15 with Vietnamese.
[00:04:08.000]
Again, you can connect patrons to over 45,000 on-demand courses for in-demand skills.
[00:04:14.000]
Some of those categories I want to talk about is technology skills, so data science, cloud computing, development, AWS, so Amazon Web Services is another one. You'll find great courses on
[00:04:26.000]
AI and IT and Adobe and Microsoft Suite.
[00:04:31.000]
You also have your business suite, leadership management communication type courses, communication skills, even writing.
[00:04:37.000]
like business writing, writing an email, that type of information you'll find there. And then personal development, that's what we're going to spend some time today in the language learning where time management, photography, yoga. This is something that we're hearing a lot from public libraries that they want more information on what type of classes we have available.
[00:04:56.000]
Because folks are asking for that from their public library and they want to do this type of learning at home.
[00:05:02.000]
in their free time, or if they just want to continue
[00:05:05.000]
they're learning. Maybe they are preparing for an exam like the test of English as a foreign language exam. We have those types of tools available within the resource.
[00:05:16.000]
So this is the area we're focusing on today with language learning.
[00:05:21.000]
And with that, let's jump right into the resource. So now I am already logged in. If you need help with that login process, we do have
[00:05:30.000]
And I'll share that with you at the end, the support site. We do have tip sheets on how to log in or how to use the Udemy app. But in this 15 minute class today.
[00:05:41.000]
We are focusing on content. So I do want to cover a few things at the top, you have the ability to search for anything. So if I wanted to search for
[00:05:50.000]
Maybe Italian, let's use that as an example. It's going to bring back everything.
[00:05:56.000]
for Italians. So it could be speaking Italian. It might be, I think I was scrolling down. I had to go a couple pages in.
[00:06:03.000]
I found a cooking class, Italian cooking class. So you can see when I do a basic search, it's going to pull back everything related to that singular term.
[00:06:13.000]
Going back to that home page, I want to share with you over to the right, I have the my learning section.
[00:06:20.000]
And these are courses that I've enrolled in.
[00:06:23.000]
that either I've used as an example or like I want to learn more about explainer videos and how to create them. So this is a course that
[00:06:30.000]
I am actually going to work on later today. So that's my learning section.
[00:06:36.000]
Over to the right is my profile information. Again, my learning. You can see your activity if you've received any messages, maybe you've messaged the instructor.
[00:06:45.000]
You can do that here and then as it's very self-explanatory, the information we have below.
[00:06:50.000]
At the top navigation, you have subject categories
[00:06:54.000]
So if I wanted to go directly into language learning, I could do that and select language learning. But I also have this explore option.
[00:07:04.000]
So I like this option. I'll share with you why. Because we have the Explorer in here
[00:07:09.000]
When I put my cursor over top of that subject, language learning, I can get a little bit of a preview.
[00:07:17.000]
Of what?
[00:07:19.000]
Sorry, go slower. What I'm going to see there so
[00:07:23.000]
English language learning, popular topics.
[00:07:26.000]
You can see to the right.
[00:07:29.000]
Test prep.
[00:07:33.000]
There's the exam I was talking about.
[00:07:34.000]
And then wanting to learn a new language. So we have world languages also available.
[00:07:41.000]
So I do like to use that Explorer. Again, I just put my cursor over Explorer.
[00:07:46.000]
I dragged it down to language learning, slowly move it across, and then that's when I can
[00:07:52.000]
take a look at those popular topics.
[00:07:55.000]
To access all of that at once, I can just click on language learning.
[00:08:00.000]
At the top of my page
[00:08:02.000]
And it takes me right into it.
[00:08:05.000]
those courses. So you can see featured courses are at the top
[00:08:12.000]
As I scroll down, here's some courses to get started. And again, I am on English language learning.
[00:08:19.000]
Right now?
[00:08:21.000]
Actually, I'm sorry, I was just in, yes, it takes you right into that first one
[00:08:25.000]
Courses to get me started.
[00:08:28.000]
So you can see
[00:08:32.000]
talking about English punctuation. So it's not just learning english
[00:08:37.000]
And these are just the most popular. I can also look at trending, which really doesn't change much, to be honest with you, most popular and trending.
[00:08:44.000]
you're going to see those same courses.
[00:08:50.000]
We have, again, popular topics
[00:08:53.000]
So is it the English language? Do I need English grammar?
[00:08:56.000]
Am I looking at pronunciation?
[00:08:59.000]
And then we also have a few others here, Mandarin Chinese language or Korean or French language.
[00:09:06.000]
Below, all English language learning courses are available and this gives you not only the title but a summary. You can see the rating here.
[00:09:15.000]
Over to the right.
[00:09:17.000]
This is so those three dots
[00:09:20.000]
With this Udemy that you have access to through TexShare, this is something that Udemy
[00:09:26.000]
As it's in the title, Gale Presents Udemy. So Udemy created
[00:09:31.000]
a version of their very popular Udemy business
[00:09:36.000]
that is specifically for public libraries. And that is what you have access to.
[00:09:42.000]
But what you would see here
[00:09:45.000]
let's say a user has Udemy business through their company
[00:09:50.000]
They would have that option. They would have a few more
[00:09:53.000]
tools show up here. But because this is a version designed for our public libraries.
[00:09:58.000]
that option isn't available, but usually it's about sharing or editing the content that they're seeing here.
[00:10:04.000]
So that's why you're not seeing anything. There's one other spot that a blank box pops up. But if you see that ever in the resources, only two spots that I know of.
[00:10:12.000]
That is why you're seeing it is because it goes with the paid for Udemy business that
[00:10:18.000]
again, companies pay for. This one has been designed for our public libraries as with the content that's available too. So it's been customized for our public libraries.
[00:10:29.000]
And you can see again below as I scroll down, you can see not only the rating, but how long will this course take?
[00:10:37.000]
how many lectures and what level it is. A lot of these are all levels, but you can see this one is intermediate.
[00:10:44.000]
This pop-up box gives me a little bit more additional information too
[00:10:49.000]
quick tidbits.
[00:10:53.000]
And we have, if I scroll down to the bottom
[00:10:56.000]
multiple pages of content.
[00:11:01.000]
Over to the left, you have some filter options. So if I just
[00:11:06.000]
wanted those courses highly
[00:11:08.000]
Rated. I can select that and it'll filter that content down for me.
[00:11:13.000]
If I'm looking for some quick coursework.
[00:11:16.000]
I have that option. Maybe I want, you know, I only have three to six hours. There's 80 courses available.
[00:11:25.000]
And then I have additional information where topic? Is it the English language or is it grammar or is it vocabulary I'm looking for?
[00:11:32.000]
I can select that. So you have a lot of pre-selectors here that will help filter down your content
[00:11:40.000]
Language, features, subtitles, all available.
[00:11:47.000]
If I go into English language test prep.
[00:11:54.000]
This is exactly that. It's preparing me for those exams those
[00:11:59.000]
As I mentioned, the test of English as a foreign language, you'll find that available here.
[00:12:07.000]
So you'll find those, here it is right here. You'll find those
[00:12:11.000]
test prep available through coursework that can be completed.
[00:12:17.000]
And then the last section is world languages.
[00:12:22.000]
Again, these are all going to look similar
[00:12:24.000]
where we have the same setup where popular, popular topics, ratings, all those same filters.
[00:12:31.000]
But here we are looking at different languages that
[00:12:34.000]
You can learn.
[00:12:39.000]
So if I did want, say, Spanish for beginners
[00:12:41.000]
It's a four hour class. This one has 32,000 people have rated it at a 4.7.
[00:12:47.000]
It's great for beginners. There's 48 lectures. I can easily select that.
[00:12:51.000]
It gives me more information here.
[00:12:54.000]
There's 21 articles. We have downloadable resources.
[00:12:58.000]
Again, mobile accessible there, what you're going to learn
[00:13:03.000]
more information on this course, even some reviews.
[00:13:10.000]
If I want to enroll in that, I just click enroll now.
[00:13:17.000]
And now I can schedule a time to learn or it could just remind me later. But now it's going to show up in my My Learning that I showed you on the homepage.
[00:13:27.000]
this course will show up. Once I enroll and there's no limit, I can enroll in this class
[00:13:32.000]
And, you know, pick it up in a month. It's not like I have to complete it in four weeks.
[00:13:37.000]
It's on-demand learning, again, at your pace. So that's why our users love it too is because there's no time limit.
[00:13:47.000]
But you can set a time as you noticed right when I enrolled in the course to put it on my calendar and make sure I'm making time to take that course, which
[00:13:55.000]
I did today. That's why I'm taking working on my course this afternoon after I'm done working.
[00:14:01.000]
So I start with an overview.
[00:14:04.000]
And that's what I saw before I even enrolled.
[00:14:06.000]
then I can see the Q&A section.
[00:14:11.000]
Notes, announcements, reviews, learning tools are all available here.
[00:14:17.000]
On the right-hand side is my course content. It starts with an introduction that's two minutes
[00:14:23.000]
I can click play.
[00:14:27.000]
Welcome, or as the Spanish say, bienvenidos. Welcome to…
[00:14:30.000]
And you could hear the beginning of that. I have a few options here. One I like to point out is the ability to add a note.
[00:14:38.000]
So at any time during this course, and it'll timestamp it for me, I can add a note, which is a really great feature to have because you can go back to
[00:14:48.000]
that exact spot also.
[00:14:50.000]
Then I also have the ability to adjust the volume. I have a transcript.
[00:14:55.000]
I also have captions available.
[00:14:58.000]
And you can see I can choose those captions in other languages.
[00:15:03.000]
quite a few there. I have some setting features if I need to change any settings, I can make this whole screen
[00:15:09.000]
Or expand that view, which would eliminate my course content on the right-hand side.
[00:15:14.000]
In that course content, if I have any additional resources, I'll see a little folder to the right.
[00:15:20.000]
And it'll give me what, you know, either it's a download. As you can see, these are download information. It might be an article to read.
[00:15:27.000]
You'll see those additional resource folders if there are any.
[00:15:31.000]
over to the right hand side.
[00:15:33.000]
in that course content.
[00:15:37.000]
All right, let me go back to the homepage.
[00:15:40.000]
And I wanted to share with you again
[00:15:42.000]
My learning, now it's right here at the top of my learning.
[00:15:48.000]
So my process, again, I have two options where I can go to the explorer and then go down to language learning.
[00:15:56.000]
And as I mentioned, it kind of gives you a better idea of what you're going to find within
[00:16:01.000]
those categories, or I can go directly to language learning
[00:16:06.000]
Right here on the home page and it'll take me to all of that great content.
[00:16:10.000]
Let me go back to
[00:16:14.000]
my PowerPoint and share with you where you can go for additional support and that's our Gale support site.
[00:16:19.000]
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in that Q&A box.
[00:16:23.000]
What you're going to find there to support Udemy is we have tip sheets on adding Udemy to your mobile device.
[00:16:30.000]
We also have tip sheets on creating an account on Udemy. We have short little video tutorials available and all kinds of great marketing materials, along with you'll find your access URLs.
[00:16:42.000]
mark records, all of the information you need to add Udemy to your library website.
[00:16:48.000]
And then in that training center is where you'll find these tip sheets. There's also training toolkits available.
[00:16:54.000]
PowerPoint slide decks, everything you need to be successful in your library with this resource and then all kinds of great marketing materials we have available.

[00:18:08.000]
Again, to bookmark your support site, your Gale support site that we've created for TexShare.

And if you would like to share your success stories.
[00:18:17.000]
On social media, we have a few places here. Please feel free to tag us.
[00:18:21.000]
Thanks, everyone. Have a great rest of your day.
Welcome to your training for TexShare Public Libraries. Today's training is 15 minutes to mastery language learning made easy with Gale Presents: Udemy.
[00:00:10.000]

[00:00:25.000]
We're going to our agenda, brief agenda, talk about Gale Presents You to me first, and then we are going to dive right into finding and how I want to share with you how easy it is to find those language learning classes and courses that are available.
[00:00:39.000]
Then I'll share with you some functionality of the resource. Always like to cover that too. Any questions that you have, please feel free to use that Q&A box and I will leave you.
