Environmental studies. It's a great resource to supplement secondary science instruction, and also at the academic level, those environmental studies courses that are happening in within your higher ed

We'll explore content tools and features, and i'll also share with you tips and tricks within the gale resource. So i'll start with an overview of Gale In context, environmental studies. We have case studies, academic journals and biographies available within this resource, and they are organized by topic pages. So you have some topic pages available that are organized on certain topics. But you have more than that

Tammi Burke: and that is how to share content. You have some different options available, like Get Link, which creates a persistent url back to any spot within the resource. You have the ability to share to Google classroom, but you also have the ability to share to learning management systems. So if you're using canvas or schoology, or d two l. We have that ability to share content, or embed content directly into an assignment, a page, or a discussion which is great for that single sign on capability.

Tammi Burke: That does take a little bit of setup on on your end with our customer success managers. But we can work that out and help you with that process. There's a lot of options available. You also have the ability to share content by sending it, sending it to Google drive, sending it to Microsoft. One drive you can email, download or also print the information off.

Tammi Burke: We have great tools to support accessibility, and these are shared tools and features across all of your gale resources. Where you have the ability to translate, you can change the font size. Listen to the text being read aloud and then change the display. Options, such as the font and the page color behind the text are also available

Tammi Burke: to encourage analysis, highlights and notes to promote that deeper learning annotation. really helps students with their color coding. Or if you're working with teachers or professors, if they want to highlight information in an article and then share it with their their students. That's a great option to to use that tool

We have topic pages within environmental studies, and that's unique in your in context resources as compared to your one file resources, you have these great topic pages available, and how they're organized with an essay and topic overview. You also have topic finder, which is a visual interactive tool and search option that's available. And then, citations. We have the citation tool where you can just pull the citation for the docent image video, whatever

So you're always going to find the citation at the bottom, and you also have the citation tool where you can just pull that citation out, or send it to easy bib or noodle tools. ! We can translate the navigational tools on this platform around this resource to over thirty-four languages. Now this is separate. Then, translating the document. You have more even more options available. To translate the document. But these navigational tools. You can sit down as soon as you access the resource and translate it into a a language that works for your users.

I will let you know in all of your in context, resources, that topic Finder, that's that interactive, visual search option lives under advanced search. So in in context, you'll always find actually in all of your gale resources. You'll find it in advance. Search

Tammi Burke: um. But in in context, it's no, it's not on the homepage or anywhere else like it is in some of the other resources. So just know that that's a good best practice to share. There's a tip right there is. If you want to utilize that right from the beginning you can click into advanced search and start that search option, and i'll share that with you after we go over this homepage. Where here you're going to find more than just the periodical content available. A lot of multimedia, as I mentioned in in my Powerpoint slides. But we do also have this great organization with these topic pages by subject category. So this helps your users drill down and find that content easily. They can look at topics like

So if there's new topic, pages or and topic pages that do need to be updated, you'll see a little orange tag next to them once they have had some updates, and that means that this image and essay overview may have been updated. So they're really easily accessible by your users. And then you have reference and audio. You have biography sectioned out here magazines, which is similar. We have the magazines, newspapers, and academic journals, which is in that periodical content in one file. But in here we also have biographies and images and videos and websites and related topics. And these are going to take you to

If we have text features, they're going to be available like if there's a vocabulary that's new or unique. Um, you're going to find that available, and then I want to talk a little bit more about the citations. Let's click into the case studies here. So i'm going to go into

Tammi Burke: Okay. So question came through. Do you pull into schoology as you would Google classroom, or do you use. Get link. That's a great question, Janet, and there's it's two. There's two answers to that. So if I wanted to pull in an entire topic page into schoology.

Tammi Burke: Then what I would do is I would use the get link when it's a large amount of information. Um, it does. We do have to use the get link tool. But you can access Gale in context environmental studies, once it's set up right from schoology, it'll be in that global navigation on the left hand side. And then, when you're in an assignment and you want to embed an image, an individual image or video or um, if there's an an article, reference article or academic journal that you want to embed right into schoology.

Tammi Burke: You can do that up at the very top. You have um the little link. Icon. It looks like a square with an arrow where all your other resources are, or, I should say, additional resources are available. When you go into create an assignment. You can click on that little icon, and your once your gale resources are set up, your this resource would pop up, you would click into it. Do your search, and then you can embed at the document level. There'll be a button that shows up where you can embed it right into schoology, so I can have

So there is some setup on the back side, and that's where your customer success managers can help. We do have a lot of documents available on learning management systems on the guilt support site, too. Tammi Burke: Okay. So looking at case studies, I can filter down my results, and i'm seeing a lot of these are a higher. Oh, goodness!

Tammi Burke: um We do have some level fours here, so case just understand that case. Studies are going to be a little bit higher level. What do I mean by higher level? Well, we have this filter. Your results option on the right hand side, and what I'm talking about is lexile and content level. So lexile measures you can multi select any lexile measures and content level is letting you know that a level four. I do want to point out that a level four. You can see the lexile measure it aligns to. So this would be more for our K. Twelve

folks. But level fours are generally high School fives are our upper High school. Into that undergrad level

Tammi Burke: level three, which I don't think we have a whole lot in here, because this is a resource that's designed for um students at the uh ninth, through twelfth grade, and also undergrad level, especially because of the great content that's available is at a higher level. Here I don't think we have a lot of level. Three is available. But you do have Gale In context Middle school from the Tennessee Electronic Library, and that's a great one to use for middle schoolers.

Tammi Burke: All right. Let me know if there's any questions on that, and then you also have the ability to search within. So again I can search within my results, even if I filtered it down. So let's say I want to filter it down by subject, and I want just the marine ecosystems.

Tammi Burke: So you can see, though, what I want to point out is it filtered everything down at once. So if I am looking just for marine ecosystems, I can quickly filter my results. Using that subject. I also have document types. Now we're in case study, so i'm not going to see as many document types as I may see um in, say reference uh, but you have document, type, options. I have publication titles I can multi select. If there's certain publication titles I always use in my classroom

And also, if you want to share this in your lesson plans, or you're doing any type of outreach with your students, your syllabus, and you have curated this collection on your own by just one click. I just clicked into a certain subject.

Tammi Burke: and that's how I can quickly do that. Another thing I like to do with my news and magazines is I sometimes like to sort by newest. It really depends, because sometimes relevance is,

I like to do that in images to um to see the newest images that have been added that are available. Um, but just know that you have that tool available. As soon as I leave my session that information is cleared, or I can come back in here and go back to my default settings. I also have the listen. Tammi Burke: I can quickly send to Google Microsoft email, download or print if i'm scrolling down. And I get to this point and think, Yep, this is information that I want to keep. Um. This is a shorter article, but let's say it was on a longer one, my contextual toolbar sticking with me, and I have that ability to send to Google one drive email I have download and print available. I also have that get link tool. The citation is attached at the bottom, and I could change the format before I send it to. Let's say my Google drive.

Tammi Burke: and click, define, and it gives me a page out of the Webster's Dictionary really helpful when you're talking about environmental studies, or maybe terms that aren't familiar. And I can um. This is going to save as long as i'm in the session. It's housing. It's holding on to this information. Now, my best practice is if I've marked up a document is to send it. Send it to Google drive one drive, email, download or print. So I have that entire document. It'll land in a folder titled Gale In context environmental studies.

Tammi Burke: Now, what's happening on the back side. Throughout this session I have this highlights and notes area where I can. It's in the upper right hand corner. It always lives there. I can view all highlights and notes. Now I do to see this option. I have to have some highlighting on my article, so there's a tip.

Tammi Burke: I also can label. So I've used two colors, pink and purple, and I can label those colors. It'll create a legend. And when I send this to my Google drive, let's say it turns it into a Google Doc and I have these notes just like this. So it's. I used to call them digital note cards because there was a grid. Now. I call them digital notes, but that's exactly what they are. Their notes that you've sectioned from text. Now, again, best practice send the entire article. So you have it, because if your users forget to come in to

If you've marked up a document, send it somewhere, So you have that entire document, and it's great to reference and come back to. I will say this, too, with your highlights and notes.
