[00:00:02.528]
All right. Hello and welcome everyone.
[00:00:04.559]
I'm Stacy Nibble, your gail trainer,
[00:00:06.589]
uh, for New Jersey. Thanks for joining me for
[00:00:08.909]
our gale presents Peterson's test
[00:00:11.148]
and career prep resources for career
[00:00:13.759]
and job hunting.
[00:00:15.358]
Uh, the session is,
[00:00:18.129]
uh, record it for folks who can't attend
[00:00:20.239]
or maybe want to go back and review.
[00:00:22.559]
We'll send some a follow up email tomorrow
[00:00:24.839]
that has a link to it as well as some other handy
[00:00:27.089]
things. Um, as we go
[00:00:29.228]
through, feel free to jump in with questions
[00:00:31.239]
or feedback any time, feel free to make use
[00:00:33.450]
of that chat tool or the Q
[00:00:35.639]
and A to let me know if there's something in particular
[00:00:37.798]
you wanna see here at the start.
[00:00:39.918]
Of course, after we get underway as well,
[00:00:42.228]
happy to take some left turns to
[00:00:44.298]
show you the things you really want to see.
[00:00:46.520]
Um, we're also joined from, uh, with Michael
[00:00:48.630]
from the state library. So he's gonna share some things
[00:00:50.899]
in the chat. Uh, one of which
[00:00:52.908]
and there we go is our, our survey,
[00:00:55.109]
uh, to let us know what you thought of the
[00:00:57.228]
session today. So,
[00:00:58.950]
um, do again, feel free to engage in the chat
[00:01:01.219]
in the Q and A as often as you need to happy
[00:01:03.310]
to take questions anytime.
[00:01:05.109]
So the title of our session while lengthy
[00:01:07.430]
does really give you an idea of what we're gonna do. I still
[00:01:09.659]
created an agenda slide here, but we're
[00:01:11.969]
gonna use Peterson's test and career prep
[00:01:14.359]
to uh find the resources
[00:01:16.540]
you may use most often for folks who are looking
[00:01:18.680]
for a job, looking for a career. Um
[00:01:21.278]
And then as we always do, we'll wrap up with
[00:01:23.359]
gale support. So where can you go after today
[00:01:25.659]
when you've got questions? So
[00:01:27.609]
I'm gonna start with just a quick resource
[00:01:29.698]
overview. So many of you might already
[00:01:31.959]
be familiar with Peterson's. Um I
[00:01:34.028]
certainly was back when I worked in
[00:01:36.459]
uh uh one of the local public libraries here in Buffalo,
[00:01:38.719]
New York, those uh
[00:01:40.760]
thick paperbacks covered our shelves.
[00:01:43.278]
They were hard to keep on the shelves and keep them
[00:01:45.290]
in good shape. Uh So it's really great
[00:01:47.359]
to have this content electronically. We
[00:01:49.558]
have um tools to look up colleges
[00:01:52.120]
to find scholarships, uh to
[00:01:55.500]
uh brush up on uh various
[00:01:58.120]
skills. And then of course, the tools that
[00:02:00.168]
we're going to look at mostly today related to job
[00:02:02.388]
and career. So to help folks find that next
[00:02:04.489]
great job or maybe switch careers
[00:02:06.989]
or even if we're talking about, say high school students,
[00:02:09.020]
maybe looking at what they might be interested
[00:02:11.080]
in, um We're gonna share some tools
[00:02:13.439]
to help you create or help folks
[00:02:15.528]
create resumes, cover letters
[00:02:17.770]
and along the ways there are various places
[00:02:19.879]
to get career advice as well. So if you're going
[00:02:22.080]
on a job interview, you know, you can find a little
[00:02:24.830]
um um
[00:02:26.899]
article on maybe questions to ask
[00:02:29.449]
or maybe you've been offered the job, you want to negotiate
[00:02:31.719]
salary. So there are lots of tools
[00:02:33.838]
uh to provide help along the
[00:02:35.889]
way as well
[00:02:37.389]
where we'll target most of our work
[00:02:39.939]
is here from the home page of the resource
[00:02:42.599]
is under explore career
[00:02:44.659]
options. That's where we're gonna spend really the bulk of
[00:02:46.710]
our time. So where we'll find the career assessment,
[00:02:48.969]
the resume builder um can
[00:02:51.169]
search for jobs and then we're going to take
[00:02:53.319]
a look at a couple of the um
[00:02:55.399]
kind of uh practice test oriented
[00:02:57.599]
areas where we can prep for vocational
[00:03:00.058]
exams
[00:03:01.469]
as well as brush up on foundational
[00:03:03.528]
skills. So maybe to kind of prep for
[00:03:05.618]
those exams as well um
[00:03:08.399]
in, in, in and of themselves. So we
[00:03:10.669]
want to get right into the resource lots to show
[00:03:12.819]
you. So let's go ahead and take a look.
[00:03:15.659]
And I've already got myself here logged
[00:03:17.830]
into the home page and again, I'm just gonna disable that video.
[00:03:20.250]
So I'm not blocking any portion of the screen for
[00:03:22.469]
you. So the
[00:03:24.629]
home page of Peterson's gives you a few ways
[00:03:26.808]
to get into the content. The
[00:03:28.909]
browse menu is nice. I think of
[00:03:30.929]
it as kind of a quick start. You just kind of choose
[00:03:33.189]
from this list.
[00:03:34.599]
And I'm gonna give just a brief mention
[00:03:36.689]
to college prep right here because I wanna let everybody
[00:03:39.069]
know we have updated our sat
[00:03:41.508]
prep to the new version of
[00:03:43.528]
the exam. I think maybe,
[00:03:45.379]
yeah, if it's this month or next month is the first
[00:03:47.610]
time it's being offered. So it's just gonna
[00:03:49.770]
of course match up with uh the prep
[00:03:51.909]
will now match up with the way the exam is
[00:03:54.000]
administered.
[00:03:55.008]
But I like the quick tool. If you kind of know
[00:03:57.118]
what you're after, you know, you're after a particular
[00:03:59.520]
task, you can kind of jump right from here
[00:04:01.879]
for newer users though. I like
[00:04:03.939]
to scroll down a bit and use the
[00:04:06.919]
kind of task oriented path where
[00:04:09.169]
OK, I want to explore my career
[00:04:11.250]
options and then you see all the different career tools
[00:04:13.639]
in one place. So I'm gonna come from
[00:04:15.849]
here now before I really dive
[00:04:18.209]
in much further though. As um if
[00:04:20.269]
you've used Peterson's at all before, you probably
[00:04:22.670]
have noticed that we have
[00:04:26.389]
a log in for this tool. So forgive
[00:04:28.579]
my clumsy arrow there. I'll use a circle instead
[00:04:31.048]
because folks are, you know, filling
[00:04:33.139]
out a resume, taking a career assessment.
[00:04:35.298]
This is usually a source they're gonna come back
[00:04:37.338]
to and use again and again. And because they're entering
[00:04:39.689]
in information about themselves, of
[00:04:41.769]
course, that's gonna require a user account.
[00:04:44.220]
So let me go ahead and pop in there and show you what
[00:04:46.259]
that takes. Very simple. Not
[00:04:48.298]
much info is needed. Let me get rid of my
[00:04:50.660]
uh drawings here so I can click on
[00:04:52.769]
that. So
[00:04:55.670]
I'm gonna log into an account. I have
[00:04:57.920]
uh ready to go so I can show you some work
[00:05:00.100]
that I've already done. But let me show you what it takes to sign
[00:05:02.139]
up for a new account.
[00:05:03.199]
Not much at all. First name and last
[00:05:05.519]
name, uh, email address
[00:05:07.889]
is the best way we're gonna
[00:05:09.949]
be able to reset your password,
[00:05:12.059]
um, or help you with the password if you've forgotten
[00:05:14.250]
it. Um, so that's why it's asked for that.
[00:05:16.290]
It is not required. You can actually sign
[00:05:18.509]
up without an email address, just giving
[00:05:20.528]
names, uh, first and last name and then
[00:05:22.579]
create your password. We do encourage
[00:05:24.959]
folks to, to use the email address though because again,
[00:05:27.220]
it's gonna be the best way to recover your password. Should
[00:05:29.298]
you forget it? We don't use that email
[00:05:31.428]
for anything other than recovering
[00:05:33.819]
your password. So, but again, some
[00:05:36.040]
folks don't like to share that. So we do have the option
[00:05:38.220]
to sign up without.
[00:05:40.019]
So it is, um, uh,
[00:05:42.129]
an option. But again,
[00:05:44.170]
I'm gonna go ahead and log in with an account where
[00:05:46.269]
I've already got some work done. So we can,
[00:05:48.879]
uh, see
[00:05:50.809]
a few things that take a little time
[00:05:52.829]
to do. Uh, and this way
[00:05:55.119]
we can don't have to spend our time doing them. You
[00:05:57.199]
can just kind of see the results. So
[00:05:59.278]
let me go ahead and get logged in.
[00:06:01.358]
And again, we're going to start right out here
[00:06:03.399]
in the career option. So as
[00:06:05.449]
we're kind of thinking about the path somebody may
[00:06:07.470]
be taking if they're thinking about a new career,
[00:06:09.629]
or again, maybe we're talking with a middle
[00:06:11.858]
schooler, a high schooler, they're trying to decide maybe what
[00:06:14.009]
they might be interested in, what they might be well
[00:06:16.209]
suited for.
[00:06:17.303]
The career assessment is a great place to
[00:06:19.363]
get started. So we're gonna find
[00:06:21.564]
that here under the explore
[00:06:23.795]
career section, there's a whole section
[00:06:26.173]
around career advice. So each
[00:06:28.384]
of these um pages
[00:06:30.394]
that we're gonna land on give you,
[00:06:33.170]
you know, maybe some task oriented things like a career
[00:06:35.379]
assessment, but then also these help
[00:06:37.428]
files and they're almost like working through uh
[00:06:39.588]
tutorials, you can kind of jump into the
[00:06:41.720]
sections you're interested in. So again, we
[00:06:44.048]
want to negotiate salary, we want some tips. I can
[00:06:46.079]
jump right into that section.
[00:06:48.629]
But to get to the career assessment itself,
[00:06:51.709]
we are, I'm just gonna scroll a bit here.
[00:06:53.858]
So you kind of see our other options. We're gonna take a look it up at these
[00:06:56.048]
two. We're gonna go ahead and jump into find a career
[00:07:00.088]
and this will open us up. The
[00:07:02.389]
career assessment is actually four
[00:07:05.079]
short kind of quiz oriented
[00:07:07.439]
assessments
[00:07:08.879]
and you just have to complete the first
[00:07:11.298]
two to get matched with careers
[00:07:13.750]
you'll see in the upper right hand corner here, explore
[00:07:15.769]
career matches. I've done the first two.
[00:07:18.278]
So your interests and your values
[00:07:20.488]
and that it will match you up with different careers
[00:07:22.588]
based on your answers. We do encourage
[00:07:25.108]
folks to take all four into account
[00:07:27.309]
though and to fill out all four, but really
[00:07:29.509]
just those first two are required.
[00:07:32.019]
The other thing, um I wanna mention
[00:07:34.278]
about these assessments is there is a bit of
[00:07:36.369]
kind of a yes, no, you know, uh pattern
[00:07:39.088]
to, to uh the interest one. But
[00:07:41.420]
if you take a look at the others, for example, the workplace
[00:07:43.928]
preferences,
[00:07:45.670]
it's really an engaging way. It
[00:07:47.778]
tries to get at your answers around
[00:07:50.019]
in this case, workplace preferences.
[00:07:52.088]
So here's a little preview of what you're about to do
[00:07:54.338]
and then we go into this assessment
[00:07:56.369]
and it's giving us all of these boxes
[00:07:58.548]
here to describe different
[00:08:00.819]
work uh environments and
[00:08:03.119]
what you would prefer in your work
[00:08:05.369]
environment. And you uh we can see the first
[00:08:07.569]
part of it is what are the four least important
[00:08:10.019]
things for you to have in your ideal uh
[00:08:12.199]
organization? So you really have to
[00:08:14.278]
think about it. It's not just a multiple choice
[00:08:16.369]
where folks kind of answer by road
[00:08:18.439]
and, and just kind of go through the questions
[00:08:21.100]
you have
[00:08:22.809]
to really think about it and kind of move these boxes
[00:08:25.278]
or sorry. Not move them, but check off these boxes
[00:08:27.420]
for the things that in this case are least
[00:08:29.639]
important to us in an organization. So
[00:08:31.928]
if I go ahead and select, we've got to choose
[00:08:34.440]
uh four. And I, I'm just randomly
[00:08:36.658]
selecting here, uh which it was, wouldn't
[00:08:38.700]
be what I would encourage folks to do and then you move
[00:08:40.859]
to your next question.
[00:08:42.418]
So now we want
[00:08:44.538]
our most important, we go through these again,
[00:08:46.768]
you can see it, remove the choices that we already had before.
[00:08:49.369]
So you really have to think about this as you
[00:08:51.479]
go along. So I find it's a really engaging
[00:08:54.067]
set of assessments um
[00:08:56.249]
for folks to go through, it does take
[00:08:58.288]
a little time though, which is why I went ahead and answered
[00:09:00.489]
some already. So I'm actually gonna go ahead and jump back.
[00:09:03.178]
It's gonna warn me that uh I'm
[00:09:05.249]
exiting the assessment.
[00:09:07.119]
We have to start over, but that's all right.
[00:09:09.279]
So let me jump back and we'll take a look at my
[00:09:11.330]
matches. So there are some help,
[00:09:13.399]
um, things over here on the right.
[00:09:15.690]
Uh As well, you can kind of explore later,
[00:09:18.229]
but the career matches are gonna
[00:09:20.279]
take those assessments and match
[00:09:22.340]
you up with different careers
[00:09:24.428]
and they break down into broad
[00:09:26.570]
subject areas shows where you're
[00:09:28.690]
very strong, strong, good, fair
[00:09:30.769]
or weak in the way that you answer these
[00:09:32.879]
questions.
[00:09:34.029]
And as we scroll down and see
[00:09:36.070]
again, these are pretty broad categories but we're gonna
[00:09:38.149]
be able to get more specific once we take a look
[00:09:40.200]
at the matches themselves. Now you have access
[00:09:42.710]
to everything. So even if there was an area where,
[00:09:45.879]
you know, it didn't seem like maybe I had a, a good inclination
[00:09:48.479]
from the assessment I can still explore
[00:09:50.779]
and see what's out there for, say, business
[00:09:53.109]
management and administration and jump
[00:09:55.330]
in there.
[00:09:56.989]
Hi.
[00:09:57.928]
But I'm gonna go ahead and go with one of my stronger
[00:10:00.129]
matches here. Jump into
[00:10:02.168]
health science and view the careers
[00:10:04.440]
that I matched with.
[00:10:05.950]
So each will know whether you were a very
[00:10:08.038]
strong match, need to match and so on.
[00:10:10.649]
And each of these descriptions is going
[00:10:13.080]
to give you
[00:10:14.979]
an overview of that job. So a description
[00:10:18.149]
you'll also see though what programs might
[00:10:20.379]
be required
[00:10:22.529]
and the abilities, you'll wanna have
[00:10:24.609]
the knowledge, the skills if you look
[00:10:26.788]
over to the right, many of these will match
[00:10:28.989]
with career videos. So you can get a little little
[00:10:31.048]
video about that job. You see the average
[00:10:33.229]
salary and the job
[00:10:35.629]
outlook. This is looking 10 years down the road,
[00:10:37.989]
kind of what does it look like for this position? So bright
[00:10:40.450]
is always good to see
[00:10:42.070]
the um degree that it may require.
[00:10:44.798]
And then you can actually even search for jobs, although we're gonna
[00:10:46.940]
put a pin in that and come back to that later.
[00:10:50.210]
Ok. So it gives you some
[00:10:52.048]
suggestions to uh decide if
[00:10:54.190]
maybe you want to investigate this further,
[00:10:56.509]
some ways you may be able to figure that out
[00:10:58.658]
even some related areas you might want to branch
[00:11:00.690]
into. So each of the jobs will offer
[00:11:02.840]
again those descriptions and so on.
[00:11:05.859]
The other thing we can see here on
[00:11:08.090]
the far left of the page are ways to
[00:11:10.168]
narrow this down. There are a lot of careers
[00:11:12.330]
mentioned here and I can see with these first
[00:11:14.379]
few, those are gonna require probably some advanced
[00:11:16.808]
degrees, right?
[00:11:17.989]
So if I am maybe just out of high
[00:11:20.070]
school or I've got a GED or I'm thinking about
[00:11:22.359]
a new career, these, those may not be positions I'm
[00:11:24.379]
ready for yet. I might need to go to school or
[00:11:26.658]
get some sort of certifications, things like that.
[00:11:29.080]
So if you notice over on the left there is an education
[00:11:31.788]
and experience filter and I like
[00:11:34.119]
to take advantage of this
[00:11:36.428]
because you can find jobs where
[00:11:39.000]
maybe if you start doing this now,
[00:11:41.359]
maybe work as say an aid.
[00:11:43.519]
That's a plus for you. If you're applying
[00:11:45.580]
for colleges or eventually when you're applying for
[00:11:47.658]
jobs that you've got experience in these
[00:11:49.739]
fields in some way, right?
[00:11:52.210]
So we can go through these as well
[00:11:54.950]
and just match up with whatever experience level
[00:11:57.000]
we have. If we're thinking, you know, I need a job
[00:11:59.129]
right now. What can I do right now with the skills
[00:12:01.609]
and, and education I have already
[00:12:04.428]
and again, you can jump into these
[00:12:06.658]
and get those details.
[00:12:08.690]
Right. The other feature I really like
[00:12:10.950]
when you're looking at your career matches and
[00:12:12.989]
I think this is especially nice in
[00:12:15.019]
New Jersey. I know you have some military bases.
[00:12:17.460]
It's where we offer the military crosswalk.
[00:12:19.580]
So if you've got someone who is
[00:12:21.908]
recently out of the military and they're
[00:12:24.019]
looking for jobs that match
[00:12:26.129]
up with the skills and knowledge they gained in the
[00:12:28.219]
military,
[00:12:29.469]
You can jump right into the military crosswalk
[00:12:32.320]
and this will take the MOC codes,
[00:12:35.340]
um, or titles of positions held
[00:12:37.450]
in the, uh, military. And then
[00:12:39.500]
you just choose the branch or with.
[00:12:41.849]
And I grabbed a few of these off of,
[00:12:44.090]
of the internet because unfortunately, these were not,
[00:12:46.190]
uh, um, military codes that I was familiar
[00:12:48.538]
with. So let me go ahead and grab
[00:12:50.629]
this off my cheat sheet here
[00:12:52.690]
and this is an Air Air Force code.
[00:12:56.320]
Hi. And then you luckily
[00:12:58.479]
it matches up with the title. So I can just remind myself
[00:13:00.489]
which one I looked that up for. Um,
[00:13:02.678]
so warfare,
[00:13:03.719]
communications, operations, technical track.
[00:13:06.119]
These are careers that I might be well
[00:13:08.239]
suited for for what I did in the military.
[00:13:10.298]
And kind of can examine those.
[00:13:12.479]
Anything that looks good to you, whether it is,
[00:13:15.989]
uh, something like this, a career match or
[00:13:18.099]
maybe on the other pages, you'll often see there's an ad
[00:13:20.308]
to favorites or add to my resources.
[00:13:22.580]
So if I want to keep track of things,
[00:13:24.658]
the resource can do that for me
[00:13:26.700]
and then it's found within my profile
[00:13:28.759]
so I can kind of easily get back.
[00:13:32.519]
So let me just check the chat and the Q
[00:13:34.590]
and A,
[00:13:35.619]
I think we're in good shape so far. I apologize. I know.
[00:13:37.639]
I'm probably moving a little fast. Let me know if you need
[00:13:39.729]
me to slow down or anything. I wanna
[00:13:41.788]
make sure we get to all of our resources
[00:13:44.469]
today. So the career
[00:13:46.619]
assessments again, I would encourage folks
[00:13:48.658]
to answer all four to see their true
[00:13:50.899]
matches
[00:13:51.788]
and I'm gonna skip a step here. So once
[00:13:53.840]
we've done the assessment, there are a few more
[00:13:55.928]
things that are gonna come. Right. If I, if I need to
[00:13:58.000]
go to school, I, I need to pass
[00:14:00.178]
some sort of test to get that job. Let's
[00:14:02.739]
jump forward a roll. Let's say though, I'm ready
[00:14:04.840]
to start applying for jobs. This
[00:14:06.859]
is also where if you'll see in the very top
[00:14:08.969]
of the banner, we have a jobs
[00:14:11.099]
tool
[00:14:12.239]
and this is gonna search for jobs.
[00:14:14.469]
This is basically kind of a centralized
[00:14:17.019]
place. It goes out and crawls other
[00:14:19.109]
websites that list that list
[00:14:21.200]
jobs. So again, maybe I'm interested
[00:14:23.580]
in some of those health science positions.
[00:14:25.729]
But with the skills I have right now the education
[00:14:28.149]
I have right now, I may be looking for
[00:14:30.779]
a physical, uh,
[00:14:33.239]
therapist aid, oops
[00:14:35.710]
aid position and,
[00:14:37.788]
uh, go ahead and use I think a Newark
[00:14:40.070]
zip code here.
[00:14:42.700]
Oh, sorry. Is that not have,
[00:14:45.879]
is it kind of this
[00:14:48.428]
worked fine when I tested it out
[00:14:50.460]
this morning? Let me open up my range
[00:14:52.469]
a little bit.
[00:14:54.000]
Oh,
[00:14:58.869]
let me see. Good bye.
[00:15:01.349]
Uh J folks. Let me uh
[00:15:10.719]
sorry folks, I apologize. I swear I tested
[00:15:13.048]
out the search even earlier.
[00:15:15.308]
Uh
[00:15:16.940]
and I could use a more general one.
[00:15:20.019]
Ok. Appears none of these are working.
[00:15:23.330]
Um,
[00:15:25.889]
s now
[00:15:27.629]
I make a, that might not be the right
[00:15:29.759]
zip code. I apologize. Folks. Looks like we've got
[00:15:31.779]
a question. Oh,
[00:15:33.729]
I, all right. I did have the zip code
[00:15:35.889]
on Facebook folks.
[00:15:37.320]
I appreciate the help here
[00:15:40.460]
most to be 07. Ok.
[00:15:42.769]
That's what I get for typing it instead of copying
[00:15:45.269]
and pasting.
[00:15:50.379]
I am a terrible typist.
[00:15:54.399]
All right, there we go. I appreciate the help folks.
[00:15:56.690]
So here we have
[00:15:58.580]
now, I expanded up to 200
[00:16:00.808]
miles. We might wanna close that range
[00:16:02.889]
down a bit. There we go.
[00:16:04.279]
Um, again, it's still letting me know where
[00:16:06.288]
I matched from because I filled out the career
[00:16:08.330]
assessments. But again, as you can see, we're not beholden
[00:16:10.840]
to what we matched with it. You can always look for
[00:16:12.940]
any type of job.
[00:16:14.308]
And again, this is a, a tool
[00:16:16.440]
that is crawling and searching other job
[00:16:18.700]
sites. So if we go ahead and open these up,
[00:16:20.788]
that's actually if you click on the learn more that's
[00:16:22.918]
where you land is out on that site. So you can get the
[00:16:25.019]
full listing. Plus most
[00:16:27.149]
of these are gonna, you know, offer some sort of
[00:16:29.379]
um if not an application but some
[00:16:31.500]
sort of, you know, form to fill out because you're interested.
[00:16:33.849]
So you really can get the details about
[00:16:36.349]
the work and, and again, maybe
[00:16:38.418]
even apply. So really
[00:16:40.538]
handy tool, it's a nicely, nicely centralized
[00:16:43.509]
uh place to be able to search for work.
[00:16:45.739]
And again, just tie it to uh
[00:16:47.808]
the filters that you may want to take
[00:16:50.288]
advantage of. Um or again, the
[00:16:52.349]
matches that you may have made with the career assessments.
[00:16:55.500]
So handy place and again, kind
[00:16:57.590]
of can do this all from, from one resource,
[00:17:00.129]
which is nice
[00:17:01.379]
before we leave this uh career
[00:17:04.009]
or explore careers tool, I just show
[00:17:06.088]
the last button here in the uh toolbar
[00:17:08.459]
there at the top,
[00:17:09.750]
we'll find again, more help for
[00:17:12.289]
all of these career related tasks. So writing
[00:17:14.420]
resumes, cover letters, how to network,
[00:17:16.838]
going through a job interview or even
[00:17:18.920]
worksheets and paths you can kind of follow
[00:17:21.309]
to again decide on
[00:17:23.378]
careers and, and vocational pathways.
[00:17:25.898]
So lots of great stuff here
[00:17:28.718]
uh in our pathway you section, again,
[00:17:31.317]
titled Explore Careers from the
[00:17:33.398]
home page of the resource. So
[00:17:35.448]
again, we all started
[00:17:37.678]
right here from explore career options.
[00:17:40.659]
And again, we've got options to go other places
[00:17:43.298]
and one we're going to take advantage of
[00:17:45.317]
next is that resume builder?
[00:17:47.337]
So let's say we found some jobs we want to apply
[00:17:49.597]
for.
[00:17:50.959]
This may look a little familiar. Some
[00:17:53.229]
folks have um used this
[00:17:55.309]
themselves. This is uh a tool
[00:17:57.949]
called Visual CV.
[00:17:59.959]
And it exists out there on the internet on its own.
[00:18:02.209]
Folks can buy a membership to it and,
[00:18:04.380]
and store their resumes. You get
[00:18:06.650]
a lot of content from
[00:18:08.789]
the paid version of that tool that's
[00:18:10.890]
out there on the web here in Peterson's
[00:18:13.309]
test and career prep,
[00:18:14.939]
uh really handy. Lots
[00:18:16.979]
of great stuff here is um
[00:18:19.209]
I think it's a great tool for a beginner. You know,
[00:18:21.299]
again, maybe that high school student who's writing their first
[00:18:23.568]
resume or, you know, college graduate
[00:18:25.890]
to someone who maybe has had a career
[00:18:28.328]
and just needs a little inspiration. I
[00:18:30.420]
certainly, you know, want my resume to look good,
[00:18:32.729]
but I don't quite have those creative skills
[00:18:34.809]
myself. So this has a lot of great templates
[00:18:37.289]
to work from
[00:18:38.890]
and my favorite part,
[00:18:40.500]
the resume examples. So
[00:18:42.529]
to me, a blank piece of paper
[00:18:44.759]
or, you know, like we, we often hear from writers
[00:18:46.949]
is the scariest thing, right? So what
[00:18:49.219]
I love to show here is if we're ready to create
[00:18:51.420]
a resume,
[00:18:52.400]
give you a few different options. You can upload one
[00:18:54.660]
you've used before. So if you in word
[00:18:56.739]
or PDF, you can upload an
[00:18:58.858]
existing resume and it will work with the content
[00:19:00.930]
there. And of course, you can always edit it and,
[00:19:03.289]
and uh make changes.
[00:19:05.910]
You can also start from scratch. Maybe you want
[00:19:07.939]
that blank piece of paper, piece of
[00:19:09.979]
paper to start with.
[00:19:11.568]
But my favorite is right here in the middle use example
[00:19:14.449]
content. So what this gives you
[00:19:17.118]
is tons, hundreds,
[00:19:19.229]
if not thousands of resume examples.
[00:19:22.380]
So if you can find a similar one
[00:19:24.449]
to a job, you've held, you see
[00:19:26.769]
the things listed and can maybe
[00:19:28.838]
reword it, you know, put it in your own voice
[00:19:31.509]
and kind of get that started rather than
[00:19:33.588]
just again, starting from that blank page.
[00:19:35.838]
So you can search by the type
[00:19:37.930]
of job. So maybe
[00:19:40.318]
it worked as a home health aide.
[00:19:43.459]
I found a resume for us.
[00:19:45.529]
We can take a little look at it, see if it suits
[00:19:47.699]
our needs. I understand the text. There is pretty small. I'm
[00:19:49.750]
just gonna go ahead and select it
[00:19:51.920]
and basically it starts a resume
[00:19:54.029]
using all that example content
[00:19:56.150]
and plugs in your name. You need to of course,
[00:19:58.199]
go through it and make adjustments, your contact
[00:20:00.390]
info and the like.
[00:20:01.608]
But then you can go through reading the summary here.
[00:20:03.979]
Does this line up with what you did?
[00:20:06.390]
And also the other thing I like for
[00:20:08.400]
it is of course, it's showing us typical tasks
[00:20:10.789]
in these jobs,
[00:20:12.348]
but
[00:20:13.309]
you can of course edit it and add in other
[00:20:15.439]
things, but it gives you the inspiration kind of
[00:20:17.459]
puts it in that resume speak.
[00:20:19.598]
Uh that is sometimes difficult to do
[00:20:21.750]
or it reminds you of things you did
[00:20:23.759]
in the job that you may not have remembered. So
[00:20:26.199]
the example content I think is just really
[00:20:28.420]
strong and again, it just gets
[00:20:30.430]
you started.
[00:20:32.180]
Hi, you can also, again change
[00:20:34.289]
the way this looks. So just at the top here,
[00:20:36.459]
we can change things like the font. If we wanna
[00:20:38.630]
mix that up,
[00:20:40.680]
go with something else here can change
[00:20:42.709]
the color scheme, the font size.
[00:20:45.459]
And if you look over to the left
[00:20:47.920]
uh in the menu on the left here, we have a templates
[00:20:50.519]
tool so we can pick something
[00:20:52.559]
else. If I want something, you know, a
[00:20:55.049]
little more visual, I
[00:20:58.439]
you can grab something from
[00:21:00.699]
the list select and it'll just
[00:21:02.809]
switch the template for you
[00:21:05.848]
and again, can make changes as needed.
[00:21:08.838]
I can always go back and get to the resume.
[00:21:10.868]
Examples, can change the page
[00:21:13.098]
layout can play around with a lot of these
[00:21:15.309]
tools here.
[00:21:16.559]
What I do like to always point out though is
[00:21:18.729]
the settings are important here.
[00:21:21.209]
So as we're working on our resume, we can
[00:21:23.239]
always download it can always export
[00:21:25.328]
it, pull it out, keep it on our hard
[00:21:27.338]
drive. If you're at the library can you
[00:21:29.358]
know, move it to a flash drive or something like that,
[00:21:31.959]
you also though have the ability to make
[00:21:33.989]
this available online.
[00:21:35.739]
So by default, when
[00:21:37.848]
you create a resume, it's in a privacy
[00:21:40.250]
mode, we call export only, meaning
[00:21:42.699]
that you're really the only one that has access
[00:21:44.838]
to it. You come into the resource, you need to
[00:21:46.930]
export it to get it to other people.
[00:21:49.118]
So again, export it in word and
[00:21:51.289]
PDF and then you share it out as
[00:21:53.368]
needed.
[00:21:54.430]
You can change this though to
[00:21:56.618]
a couple other options. Unlisted
[00:21:58.848]
is kind of the next level up. What
[00:22:00.890]
it will do is create a URL
[00:22:02.959]
for that resume. So this is something I could copy
[00:22:05.348]
and paste and maybe put into a cover letter
[00:22:07.430]
or an email and folks can
[00:22:09.439]
click it and land right on it.
[00:22:11.250]
However, it's not indexed by search
[00:22:13.338]
engines. So you really have to have that
[00:22:15.358]
URL to find it. It's just not out there
[00:22:17.459]
on the open web where anybody could come across
[00:22:19.880]
it. They need that URL
[00:22:22.180]
for you and you share that with again,
[00:22:24.209]
wherever it needs to go,
[00:22:26.348]
then the the furthest level up
[00:22:28.670]
and the least level of privacy is public
[00:22:31.250]
and same thing, you're going to get a URL
[00:22:33.400]
that you can share with others, but it also would be searchable
[00:22:35.939]
online.
[00:22:36.818]
So folks could find it just
[00:22:38.900]
by searching your name and you may want
[00:22:40.930]
that again, folks may wanna, you know, share
[00:22:43.279]
as much as possible and get their name
[00:22:45.299]
out there. Uh But those
[00:22:47.529]
are kind of your options. And again, by default,
[00:22:50.509]
you always have the highest level of privacy where
[00:22:52.739]
you have to export it and pull it out.
[00:22:55.059]
So I'm gonna make sure to set that back for
[00:22:57.108]
mine. Um I do not
[00:22:59.309]
have this work experience, so I don't want to put that
[00:23:01.380]
out on the internet. So it's good,
[00:23:03.039]
make sure to click save
[00:23:04.459]
so that it doesn't go anywhere. But again,
[00:23:06.539]
that's under setting. So you can always go
[00:23:08.689]
back and change it, adjust as needed.
[00:23:12.618]
The other great thing here is you get to keep
[00:23:14.880]
multiple versions of your resume.
[00:23:17.318]
So I've got several going here that I've created
[00:23:19.689]
in other training sessions.
[00:23:22.239]
This way, you can change it as needed
[00:23:24.549]
for
[00:23:25.868]
different types of jobs or, you know, maybe
[00:23:28.019]
even different fields. If folks are switching industry,
[00:23:30.239]
switching careers, you know, they may have resumes
[00:23:32.578]
suited for what they did before and maybe what they're,
[00:23:35.029]
they're ready to do next. So you can keep different
[00:23:37.059]
versions of that. You can also do
[00:23:39.140]
the same with cover letters. Again, a lot of help
[00:23:41.420]
to get those written, can even
[00:23:43.500]
create a website um
[00:23:45.779]
about yourself. So maybe a portfolio
[00:23:47.848]
of content, you've produced things like that.
[00:23:50.459]
And there's also a career journal where you can
[00:23:53.039]
kind of keep track of your accomplishments,
[00:23:55.130]
which again, that's something, you know, as it's
[00:23:57.189]
happening in your life, you may note it and be thrilled
[00:23:59.479]
about it. And then a year later when you're writing a resume, you've
[00:24:01.650]
forgotten all about it. So the career
[00:24:04.309]
um journal is a great way to keep track
[00:24:06.459]
of those kind of milestones.
[00:24:09.559]
Ok. Moving fast here, I'm gonna jump
[00:24:11.709]
back to the, the main page of the resource
[00:24:14.420]
and we'll share a few more things. So
[00:24:17.420]
we pretty much we've done all our work here from
[00:24:19.640]
again on the home page under explore
[00:24:21.750]
career options, wanna point out
[00:24:24.108]
the test prep options. So if someone has
[00:24:26.170]
decided to go for a career where maybe it requires a civil
[00:24:28.459]
service exam or some other
[00:24:30.529]
sort of certification, we have
[00:24:32.699]
a ton of vocational related career or
[00:24:34.769]
test prep you can find here
[00:24:37.174]
and this grows all the time. Um
[00:24:39.223]
For example, under medical and nursing, I would say
[00:24:41.604]
in the time we've had access to the database, it's probably
[00:24:43.943]
quadrupled the number of tests that are available
[00:24:46.104]
there. So always kind of, you
[00:24:48.134]
know, keep an eye on this, it will add new,
[00:24:50.344]
new ones all the time. So if we jump in the same
[00:24:52.443]
medical and nursing,
[00:24:54.348]
now, often what you'll find our exam,
[00:24:56.949]
our practice exams and exam
[00:24:59.338]
props. So kind of study tools
[00:25:01.519]
uh to get ready for that exam as well.
[00:25:03.660]
So lots of nursing related tools.
[00:25:06.140]
Um Those were big requests when
[00:25:08.180]
we, when we launched this resource, some newer
[00:25:10.479]
ones that have got it added back in, they are not
[00:25:12.519]
added back and got it added like a pharmacy
[00:25:14.868]
technician EMT exams.
[00:25:17.368]
Health care has been a, a much a really popular
[00:25:19.719]
area uh for this resource
[00:25:22.279]
and there's our physical therapy assistant
[00:25:24.299]
exam prep.
[00:25:25.848]
Now, when you jump into this, our
[00:25:27.890]
test preps all follow a pretty
[00:25:30.229]
similar format. What's
[00:25:32.279]
gonna vary is of course, how the actual exam
[00:25:34.608]
is, is, uh, administered. So, if it's a time
[00:25:36.989]
test, if it's an untime test, you're gonna see all
[00:25:39.229]
of those things built into the practice
[00:25:41.598]
exams. Again, you're also gonna get
[00:25:43.719]
for many of these exam prep. So ways
[00:25:45.969]
to study almost like working through a course
[00:25:48.618]
to get ready for the exam. So again, if you
[00:25:50.759]
picture those big Peterson's books,
[00:25:52.789]
you know, really, it's the last quarter
[00:25:55.130]
of the book that is practice exams, the
[00:25:57.140]
rest is all prep right to explain
[00:25:59.160]
the exam. So that's what you'll see here too.
[00:26:01.318]
We've got lots of paths we can use to
[00:26:03.338]
study and then you get into the actual
[00:26:05.368]
practice exams themselves. There are usually a few
[00:26:08.108]
so you can take it a couple times.
[00:26:10.250]
Um, Peterson's doesn't recommend,
[00:26:12.818]
you know, starting to memorize answers and things like that.
[00:26:14.848]
So they'd like to offer more than one version of the exam.
[00:26:17.939]
You get a little welcome. Let you know how it's
[00:26:19.969]
gonna run through and then you just start
[00:26:22.209]
and work through the exam
[00:26:24.209]
and I'm just gonna answer a couple here
[00:26:26.289]
so I can show you what it does after you've examined,
[00:26:28.979]
uh, taken the exam.
[00:26:30.848]
I'm gonna go ahead and submit which I've only
[00:26:32.900]
answered three questions. But, uh, we
[00:26:35.239]
want to see what that looks like. So
[00:26:37.199]
warns me that I'm not answering most
[00:26:39.219]
of the questions here, but that's all right.
[00:26:41.400]
We wanna get to the grading
[00:26:43.439]
so you can see
[00:26:45.209]
what is uh
[00:26:47.348]
what it's gonna share with us. So it's gonna take me
[00:26:49.479]
through
[00:26:51.118]
my answers basically. And you can see
[00:26:53.318]
where you went wrong and where you went right
[00:26:55.578]
in an explanation for where you went wrong.
[00:26:58.029]
So I did not randomly
[00:27:00.068]
select the correct answer here for question number
[00:27:02.250]
one. And we get um an answer.
[00:27:04.509]
So we learn from where we went wrong, right?
[00:27:06.848]
And can again, go back into that study prep.
[00:27:09.479]
You've also got the other prep
[00:27:11.910]
I like to mention here is the foundational
[00:27:14.219]
skills tool. So this is,
[00:27:16.818]
you know, some things that folks may want to brush up on
[00:27:18.910]
if say somebody needs to get their GED for
[00:27:20.969]
the career they're interested in and they're not ready
[00:27:23.130]
for the GED yet. You can go into say math
[00:27:25.479]
and science, reading and writing and build up some
[00:27:27.568]
basic skills and just,
[00:27:29.930]
you know, work through some of these tutorials
[00:27:32.078]
and question banks to kind of build up those
[00:27:34.088]
skills. It's also got
[00:27:36.229]
some handy um
[00:27:38.910]
help for, oh sorry, let me go
[00:27:41.019]
back uh computer
[00:27:43.568]
basic skills, working with different Microsoft programs
[00:27:46.078]
and Windows. Um So for again,
[00:27:48.098]
maybe folks heading into a job, they want to brush
[00:27:50.108]
up on their Excel skills or something like that,
[00:27:52.199]
you've got tutorials to go along with that.
[00:27:54.380]
So again, you can build up those skills, be
[00:27:56.439]
able to put things on a resume, apply for
[00:27:58.618]
jobs, maybe wouldn't have, you know, felt
[00:28:00.779]
comfortable applying for
[00:28:03.009]
before you brush up on these skills.
[00:28:05.180]
So, ok, lots
[00:28:07.299]
of stuff. Let me just double check my
[00:28:09.479]
um
[00:28:11.779]
notes here. I think I had everything
[00:28:14.209]
I wanted to. I don't think there's anything
[00:28:16.529]
I'm just gonna double check the chat and the Q and
[00:28:18.559]
A
[00:28:21.029]
and in good shape there.
[00:28:26.848]
No, there we are. Ok. So
[00:28:28.900]
let me pop back and to
[00:28:31.098]
the powerpoint and share
[00:28:33.809]
our uh contact info
[00:28:36.150]
and where you can find some great materials.
[00:28:44.098]
All righty. So our support
[00:28:46.299]
site for our new Jersey libraries
[00:28:48.479]
is support.gal.com/njsl.
[00:28:52.358]
And here you will find, you know, kind
[00:28:54.368]
of the access and product info
[00:28:56.729]
could be all set there, you know, file, I have
[00:28:58.930]
got your, your link set up and everything,
[00:29:00.989]
but there's other good tech support information
[00:29:03.338]
there as well, how to user reports and things
[00:29:05.434]
like that.
[00:29:06.634]
You'll also find our training center, we have lots
[00:29:08.834]
of materials ready to go. So say you're
[00:29:10.875]
gonna work Peterson's into
[00:29:13.104]
maybe of course your offering around
[00:29:15.203]
careers and job searches. We've got
[00:29:17.305]
handouts you can use. There's also
[00:29:19.344]
great marketing materials. If you want to let folks
[00:29:21.625]
know you have this, you know, maybe share with local
[00:29:25.039]
uh organizations or employment
[00:29:27.068]
offices and things like that. We have
[00:29:29.108]
bookmarks. We even have social media posts
[00:29:31.439]
that are ready to go. Uh lots of other
[00:29:33.729]
digital assets you can take advantage of,
[00:29:35.949]
you know, no need to recreate the wheel. We've got
[00:29:38.059]
a lot of great stuff out there uh for
[00:29:40.130]
you to take advantage of even training
[00:29:42.368]
uh slide decks. So that if you again
[00:29:44.578]
are, are offering this as some sort of a program,
[00:29:47.289]
we've got slides ready for you.
[00:29:50.170]
Ok. We also offer
[00:29:52.279]
from the support site ways to make the resource
[00:29:54.559]
more discoverable. So if
[00:29:56.699]
you want to maybe on your website,
[00:29:58.779]
you've got a page dedicated to the job and career
[00:30:01.118]
help. And you want to let folks know about
[00:30:03.519]
this resource, we have of course
[00:30:05.739]
the link to get to the database, but we also have
[00:30:07.949]
subject hub
[00:30:09.269]
links and ebook links. So
[00:30:11.289]
folks can get directly to different parts
[00:30:13.739]
of the resource. So if I wanna make sure
[00:30:15.900]
folks know about the reading and writing basic skills
[00:30:18.328]
tools that are available, you can get
[00:30:20.539]
what we call the subject tub link P
[00:30:22.969]
links to put right on
[00:30:25.009]
your web page. Um You can also
[00:30:27.049]
get mark records for these. So along
[00:30:29.289]
not just the ebooks but for the subject hubs
[00:30:31.309]
as well. So if folks come into your catalog
[00:30:33.549]
and do a search on the GED,
[00:30:35.789]
they would get a link right into Peterson's
[00:30:38.250]
where you can find all that GED test prep
[00:30:40.449]
support.
[00:30:41.880]
So again, those are available from
[00:30:44.039]
the support site and you have questions about any
[00:30:46.358]
of this you can of course ask now, but
[00:30:48.640]
should it come later? Um You can
[00:30:50.759]
always reach out to your team at Gale again.
[00:30:52.799]
I'm your trainer. So feel free to reach out
[00:30:54.969]
to me.
[00:30:55.930]
Um Oh, all of this information on this slide
[00:30:58.098]
here is gonna be in the follow up email that you will receive,
[00:31:00.118]
you'll receive tomorrow. Around this time. You can
[00:31:02.140]
also reach out to your customer success manager
[00:31:04.630]
at Gale uh as well as
[00:31:06.838]
our tech support group. So
[00:31:09.150]
no shortage of people to go to for help
[00:31:11.400]
uh with your gale resources. We
[00:31:13.608]
want to hear your feedback too. So feel free
[00:31:15.650]
to share that you don't have to come to us just with questions,
[00:31:18.358]
we wanna know what's working for you in the resources,
[00:31:20.568]
what you could use more of again, going
[00:31:22.809]
back to um you know, those
[00:31:24.939]
the uh exam prep that we
[00:31:27.059]
have in the resource that keeps growing because
[00:31:29.219]
people keep telling us the new things they want.
[00:31:31.769]
So definitely send in those requests.
[00:31:34.049]
We wanna know what your patrons
[00:31:36.439]
and students are are looking for.
[00:31:39.269]
So with that, I will let you all go to enjoy
[00:31:41.338]
the rest of your day. Thanks so much for tuning
[00:31:43.400]
in. And again, please take that link with you
[00:31:45.578]
um from the chat that, that Michael
[00:31:47.680]
shared, so you can share your feedback.
[00:31:50.009]
Um And again, feel free to reach out.
[00:31:52.239]
You'll get my email tomorrow around this time with
[00:31:54.269]
all of our contact info.
[00:31:56.108]
Uh And I'm happy to uh hear from you.
[00:31:58.729]
So, oh, and there we go. Thanks, Michael. You shared that again
[00:32:00.868]
there at the end. So thanks all for
[00:32:03.019]
tuning in.
[00:32:06.108]
Oh, great question in the chat. So do this
[00:32:08.239]
direct subject links, respects
[00:32:10.299]
institutional proxy, URL
[00:32:12.400]
S I, they do
[00:32:14.519]
for most of our resources. Let me double
[00:32:16.868]
check that they do for Peterson's. I'll
[00:32:18.920]
make sure I've got an answer for that. That comes
[00:32:21.229]
in the follow up email. I think they
[00:32:23.400]
do, but I don't want
[00:32:25.500]
to say that without double checking something on
[00:32:27.509]
our support site.
[00:32:29.890]
Uh
[00:32:30.910]
So let me just confirm
[00:32:33.318]
it for
[00:32:38.199]
both the subject hubs and the Mark
[00:32:40.500]
records,
[00:32:42.160]
but I'll, I'll let you know for sure. Thank you, Angela.
[00:32:44.328]
That's a great question. I'll um, again,
[00:32:46.368]
make sure to get you an answer tomorrow in
[00:32:48.608]
the uh follow up email.
[00:32:51.489]
Mhm. All
[00:32:54.259]
right.
[00:32:55.608]
I'm gonna go ahead and stop the recording.
All right. Hello and welcome everyone.
[00:00:04.559]
I'm Stacy Nibble, your gail trainer,
[00:00:06.589]
uh, for New Jersey. Thanks for joining me for
[00:00:08.909]
our gale presents Peterson's test
[00:00:11.148]
and career prep resources for career
[00:00:13.759]
and job hunting.
[00:00:15.358]
Uh, the session is,
[00:00:18.129]
uh, record it for folks who can't attend
[00:00:20.239]
or maybe want to go back and review.
[00:00:22.559]
We'll send some a follow up email tomorrow
[00:00:24.839]
that has a link to it as well as some other handy
[00:00:27.089]
things. Um, as we go
[00:00:29.228]
through, feel free to jump in with questions
[00:00:31.239]
or feedback any time, feel free to make use
[00:00:33.450]
of that chat tool or the Q
[00:00:35.639]
and A to let me know if there's something in particular
[00:00:37.798]
you wanna see here at the start.
[00:00:39.918]
Of course, after we get underway as well,
[00:00:42.228]
happy to take some left turns to
[00:00:44.298]
show you the things you really want to see.
[00:00:46.520]
Um, we're also joined from, uh, with Michael
[00:00:48.630]
from the state library. So he's gonna share some things
[00:00:50.899]
in the chat. Uh, one of which
[00:00:52.908]
and there we go is our, our survey,
[00:00:55.109]
uh, to let us know what you thought of the
[00:00:57.228]
session today. So,
[00:00:58.950]
um, do again, feel free to engage in the chat
[00:01:01.219]
in the Q and A as often as you need to happy
[00:01:03.310]
to take questions anytime.
[00:01:05.109]
So the title of our session while lengthy
[00:01:07.430]
does really give you an idea of what we're gonna do. I still
[00:01:09.659]
created an agenda slide here, but we're
[00:01:11.969]
gonna use Peterson's test and career prep
[00:01:14.359]
to uh find the resources
[00:01:16.540]
you may use most often for folks who are looking
[00:01:18.680]
for a job, looking for a career. Um
[00:01:21.278]
And then as we always do, we'll wrap up with
[00:01:23.359]
gale support. So where can you go after today
[00:01:25.659]
when you've got questions? So
[00:01:27.609]
I'm gonna start with just a quick resource
[00:01:29.698]
overview. So many of you might already
[00:01:31.959]
be familiar with Peterson's. Um I
[00:01:34.028]
certainly was back when I worked in
[00:01:36.459]
uh uh one of the local public libraries here in Buffalo,
[00:01:38.719]
New York, those uh
[00:01:40.760]
thick paperbacks covered our shelves.
[00:01:43.278]
They were hard to keep on the shelves and keep them
[00:01:45.290]
in good shape. Uh So it's really great
[00:01:47.359]
to have this content electronically. We
[00:01:49.558]
have um tools to look up colleges
[00:01:52.120]
to find scholarships, uh to
[00:01:55.500]
uh brush up on uh various
[00:01:58.120]
skills. And then of course, the tools that
[00:02:00.168]
we're going to look at mostly today related to job
[00:02:02.388]
and career. So to help folks find that next
[00:02:04.489]
great job or maybe switch careers
[00:02:06.989]
or even if we're talking about, say high school students,
[00:02:09.020]
maybe looking at what they might be interested
[00:02:11.080]
in, um We're gonna share some tools
[00:02:13.439]
to help you create or help folks
[00:02:15.528]
create resumes, cover letters
[00:02:17.770]
and along the ways there are various places
[00:02:19.879]
to get career advice as well. So if you're going
[00:02:22.080]
on a job interview, you know, you can find a little
[00:02:24.830]
um um
[00:02:26.899]
article on maybe questions to ask
[00:02:29.449]
or maybe you've been offered the job, you want to negotiate
[00:02:31.719]
salary. So there are lots of tools
[00:02:33.838]
uh to provide help along the
[00:02:35.889]
way as well
[00:02:37.389]
where we'll target most of our work
[00:02:39.939]
is here from the home page of the resource
[00:02:42.599]
is under explore career
[00:02:44.659]
options. That's where we're gonna spend really the bulk of
[00:02:46.710]
our time. So where we'll find the career assessment,
[00:02:48.969]
the resume builder um can
[00:02:51.169]
search for jobs and then we're going to take
[00:02:53.319]
a look at a couple of the um
[00:02:55.399]
kind of uh practice test oriented
[00:02:57.599]
areas where we can prep for vocational
[00:03:00.058]
exams
[00:03:01.469]
as well as brush up on foundational
[00:03:03.528]
skills. So maybe to kind of prep for
[00:03:05.618]
those exams as well um
[00:03:08.399]
in, in, in and of themselves. So we
[00:03:10.669]
want to get right into the resource lots to show
[00:03:12.819]
you. So let's go ahead and take a look.
[00:03:15.659]
And I've already got myself here logged
[00:03:17.830]
into the home page and again, I'm just gonna disable that video.
[00:03:20.250]
So I'm not blocking any portion of the screen for
[00:03:22.469]
you. So the
[00:03:24.629]
home page of Peterson's gives you a few ways
[00:03:26.808]
to get into the content. The
[00:03:28.909]
browse menu is nice. I think of
[00:03:30.929]
it as kind of a quick start. You just kind of choose
[00:03:33.189]
from this list.
[00:03:34.599]
And I'm gonna give just a brief mention
[00:03:36.689]
to college prep right here because I wanna let everybody
[00:03:39.069]
know we have updated our sat
[00:03:41.508]
prep to the new version of
[00:03:43.528]
the exam. I think maybe,
[00:03:45.379]
yeah, if it's this month or next month is the first
[00:03:47.610]
time it's being offered. So it's just gonna
[00:03:49.770]
of course match up with uh the prep
[00:03:51.909]
will now match up with the way the exam is
[00:03:54.000]
administered.
[00:03:55.008]
But I like the quick tool. If you kind of know
[00:03:57.118]
what you're after, you know, you're after a particular
[00:03:59.520]
task, you can kind of jump right from here
[00:04:01.879]
for newer users though. I like
[00:04:03.939]
to scroll down a bit and use the
[00:04:06.919]
kind of task oriented path where
[00:04:09.169]
OK, I want to explore my career
[00:04:11.250]
options and then you see all the different career tools
[00:04:13.639]
in one place. So I'm gonna come from
[00:04:15.849]
here now before I really dive
[00:04:18.209]
in much further though. As um if
[00:04:20.269]
you've used Peterson's at all before, you probably
[00:04:22.670]
have noticed that we have
[00:04:26.389]
a log in for this tool. So forgive
[00:04:28.579]
my clumsy arrow there. I'll use a circle instead
[00:04:31.048]
because folks are, you know, filling
[00:04:33.139]
out a resume, taking a career assessment.
[00:04:35.298]
This is usually a source they're gonna come back
[00:04:37.338]
to and use again and again. And because they're entering
[00:04:39.689]
in information about themselves, of
[00:04:41.769]
course, that's gonna require a user account.
[00:04:44.220]
So let me go ahead and pop in there and show you what
[00:04:46.259]
that takes. Very simple. Not
[00:04:48.298]
much info is needed. Let me get rid of my
[00:04:50.660]
uh drawings here so I can click on
[00:04:52.769]
that. So
[00:04:55.670]
I'm gonna log into an account. I have
[00:04:57.920]
uh ready to go so I can show you some work
[00:05:00.100]
that I've already done. But let me show you what it takes to sign
[00:05:02.139]
up for a new account.
[00:05:03.199]
Not much at all. First name and last
[00:05:05.519]
name, uh, email address
[00:05:07.889]
is the best way we're gonna
[00:05:09.949]
be able to reset your password,
[00:05:12.059]
um, or help you with the password if you've forgotten
[00:05:14.250]
it. Um, so that's why it's asked for that.
[00:05:16.290]
It is not required. You can actually sign
[00:05:18.509]
up without an email address, just giving
[00:05:20.528]
names, uh, first and last name and then
[00:05:22.579]
create your password. We do encourage
[00:05:24.959]
folks to, to use the email address though because again,
[00:05:27.220]
it's gonna be the best way to recover your password. Should
[00:05:29.298]
you forget it? We don't use that email
[00:05:31.428]
for anything other than recovering
[00:05:33.819]
your password. So, but again, some
[00:05:36.040]
folks don't like to share that. So we do have the option
[00:05:38.220]
to sign up without.
[00:05:40.019]
So it is, um, uh,
[00:05:42.129]
an option. But again,
[00:05:44.170]
I'm gonna go ahead and log in with an account where
[00:05:46.269]
I've already got some work done. So we can,
[00:05:48.879]
uh, see
[00:05:50.809]
a few things that take a little time
[00:05:52.829]
to do. Uh, and this way
[00:05:55.119]
we can don't have to spend our time doing them. You
[00:05:57.199]
can just kind of see the results. So
[00:05:59.278]
let me go ahead and get logged in.
[00:06:01.358]
And again, we're going to start right out here
[00:06:03.399]
in the career option. So as
[00:06:05.449]
we're kind of thinking about the path somebody may
[00:06:07.470]
be taking if they're thinking about a new career,
[00:06:09.629]
or again, maybe we're talking with a middle
[00:06:11.858]
schooler, a high schooler, they're trying to decide maybe what
[00:06:14.009]
they might be interested in, what they might be well
[00:06:16.209]
suited for.
[00:06:17.303]
The career assessment is a great place to
[00:06:19.363]
get started. So we're gonna find
[00:06:21.564]
that here under the explore
[00:06:23.795]
career section, there's a whole section
[00:06:26.173]
around career advice. So each
[00:06:28.384]
of these um pages
[00:06:30.394]
that we're gonna land on give you,
[00:06:33.170]
you know, maybe some task oriented things like a career
[00:06:35.379]
assessment, but then also these help
[00:06:37.428]
files and they're almost like working through uh
[00:06:39.588]
tutorials, you can kind of jump into the
[00:06:41.720]
sections you're interested in. So again, we
[00:06:44.048]
want to negotiate salary, we want some tips. I can
[00:06:46.079]
jump right into that section.
[00:06:48.629]
But to get to the career assessment itself,
[00:06:51.709]
we are, I'm just gonna scroll a bit here.
[00:06:53.858]
So you kind of see our other options. We're gonna take a look it up at these
[00:06:56.048]
two. We're gonna go ahead and jump into find a career
[00:07:00.088]
and this will open us up. The
[00:07:02.389]
career assessment is actually four
[00:07:05.079]
short kind of quiz oriented
[00:07:07.439]
assessments
[00:07:08.879]
and you just have to complete the first
[00:07:11.298]
two to get matched with careers
[00:07:13.750]
you'll see in the upper right hand corner here, explore
[00:07:15.769]
career matches. I've done the first two.
[00:07:18.278]
So your interests and your values
[00:07:20.488]
and that it will match you up with different careers
[00:07:22.588]
based on your answers. We do encourage
[00:07:25.108]
folks to take all four into account
[00:07:27.309]
though and to fill out all four, but really
[00:07:29.509]
just those first two are required.
[00:07:32.019]
The other thing, um I wanna mention
[00:07:34.278]
about these assessments is there is a bit of
[00:07:36.369]
kind of a yes, no, you know, uh pattern
[00:07:39.088]
to, to uh the interest one. But
[00:07:41.420]
if you take a look at the others, for example, the workplace
[00:07:43.928]
preferences,
[00:07:45.670]
it's really an engaging way. It
[00:07:47.778]
tries to get at your answers around
[00:07:50.019]
in this case, workplace preferences.
[00:07:52.088]
So here's a little preview of what you're about to do
[00:07:54.338]
and then we go into this assessment
[00:07:56.369]
and it's giving us all of these boxes
[00:07:58.548]
here to describe different
[00:08:00.819]
work uh environments and
[00:08:03.119]
what you would prefer in your work
[00:08:05.369]
environment. And you uh we can see the first
[00:08:07.569]
part of it is what are the four least important
[00:08:10.019]
things for you to have in your ideal uh
[00:08:12.199]
organization? So you really have to
[00:08:14.278]
think about it. It's not just a multiple choice
[00:08:16.369]
where folks kind of answer by road
[00:08:18.439]
and, and just kind of go through the questions
[00:08:21.100]
you have
[00:08:22.809]
to really think about it and kind of move these boxes
[00:08:25.278]
or sorry. Not move them, but check off these boxes
[00:08:27.420]
for the things that in this case are least
[00:08:29.639]
important to us in an organization. So
[00:08:31.928]
if I go ahead and select, we've got to choose
[00:08:34.440]
uh four. And I, I'm just randomly
[00:08:36.658]
selecting here, uh which it was, wouldn't
[00:08:38.700]
be what I would encourage folks to do and then you move
[00:08:40.859]
to your next question.
[00:08:42.418]
So now we want
[00:08:44.538]
our most important, we go through these again,
[00:08:46.768]
you can see it, remove the choices that we already had before.
[00:08:49.369]
So you really have to think about this as you
[00:08:51.479]
go along. So I find it's a really engaging
[00:08:54.067]
set of assessments um
[00:08:56.249]
for folks to go through, it does take
[00:08:58.288]
a little time though, which is why I went ahead and answered
[00:09:00.489]
some already. So I'm actually gonna go ahead and jump back.
[00:09:03.178]
It's gonna warn me that uh I'm
[00:09:05.249]
exiting the assessment.
[00:09:07.119]
We have to start over, but that's all right.
[00:09:09.279]
So let me jump back and we'll take a look at my
[00:09:11.330]
matches. So there are some help,
[00:09:13.399]
um, things over here on the right.
[00:09:15.690]
Uh As well, you can kind of explore later,
[00:09:18.229]
but the career matches are gonna
[00:09:20.279]
take those assessments and match
[00:09:22.340]
you up with different careers
[00:09:24.428]
and they break down into broad
[00:09:26.570]
subject areas shows where you're
[00:09:28.690]
very strong, strong, good, fair
[00:09:30.769]
or weak in the way that you answer these
[00:09:32.879]
questions.
[00:09:34.029]
And as we scroll down and see
[00:09:36.070]
again, these are pretty broad categories but we're gonna
[00:09:38.149]
be able to get more specific once we take a look
[00:09:40.200]
at the matches themselves. Now you have access
[00:09:42.710]
to everything. So even if there was an area where,
[00:09:45.879]
you know, it didn't seem like maybe I had a, a good inclination
[00:09:48.479]
from the assessment I can still explore
[00:09:50.779]
and see what's out there for, say, business
[00:09:53.109]
management and administration and jump
[00:09:55.330]
in there.
[00:09:56.989]
Hi.
[00:09:57.928]
But I'm gonna go ahead and go with one of my stronger
[00:10:00.129]
matches here. Jump into
[00:10:02.168]
health science and view the careers
[00:10:04.440]
that I matched with.
[00:10:05.950]
So each will know whether you were a very
[00:10:08.038]
strong match, need to match and so on.
[00:10:10.649]
And each of these descriptions is going
[00:10:13.080]
to give you
[00:10:14.979]
an overview of that job. So a description
[00:10:18.149]
you'll also see though what programs might
[00:10:20.379]
be required
[00:10:22.529]
and the abilities, you'll wanna have
[00:10:24.609]
the knowledge, the skills if you look
[00:10:26.788]
over to the right, many of these will match
[00:10:28.989]
with career videos. So you can get a little little
[00:10:31.048]
video about that job. You see the average
[00:10:33.229]
salary and the job
[00:10:35.629]
outlook. This is looking 10 years down the road,
[00:10:37.989]
kind of what does it look like for this position? So bright
[00:10:40.450]
is always good to see
[00:10:42.070]
the um degree that it may require.
[00:10:44.798]
And then you can actually even search for jobs, although we're gonna
[00:10:46.940]
put a pin in that and come back to that later.
[00:10:50.210]
Ok. So it gives you some
[00:10:52.048]
suggestions to uh decide if
[00:10:54.190]
maybe you want to investigate this further,
[00:10:56.509]
some ways you may be able to figure that out
[00:10:58.658]
even some related areas you might want to branch
[00:11:00.690]
into. So each of the jobs will offer
[00:11:02.840]
again those descriptions and so on.
[00:11:05.859]
The other thing we can see here on
[00:11:08.090]
the far left of the page are ways to
[00:11:10.168]
narrow this down. There are a lot of careers
[00:11:12.330]
mentioned here and I can see with these first
[00:11:14.379]
few, those are gonna require probably some advanced
[00:11:16.808]
degrees, right?
[00:11:17.989]
So if I am maybe just out of high
[00:11:20.070]
school or I've got a GED or I'm thinking about
[00:11:22.359]
a new career, these, those may not be positions I'm
[00:11:24.379]
ready for yet. I might need to go to school or
[00:11:26.658]
get some sort of certifications, things like that.
[00:11:29.080]
So if you notice over on the left there is an education
[00:11:31.788]
and experience filter and I like
[00:11:34.119]
to take advantage of this
[00:11:36.428]
because you can find jobs where
[00:11:39.000]
maybe if you start doing this now,
[00:11:41.359]
maybe work as say an aid.
[00:11:43.519]
That's a plus for you. If you're applying
[00:11:45.580]
for colleges or eventually when you're applying for
[00:11:47.658]
jobs that you've got experience in these
[00:11:49.739]
fields in some way, right?
[00:11:52.210]
So we can go through these as well
[00:11:54.950]
and just match up with whatever experience level
[00:11:57.000]
we have. If we're thinking, you know, I need a job
[00:11:59.129]
right now. What can I do right now with the skills
[00:12:01.609]
and, and education I have already
[00:12:04.428]
and again, you can jump into these
[00:12:06.658]
and get those details.
[00:12:08.690]
Right. The other feature I really like
[00:12:10.950]
when you're looking at your career matches and
[00:12:12.989]
I think this is especially nice in
[00:12:15.019]
New Jersey. I know you have some military bases.
[00:12:17.460]
It's where we offer the military crosswalk.
[00:12:19.580]
So if you've got someone who is
[00:12:21.908]
recently out of the military and they're
[00:12:24.019]
looking for jobs that match
[00:12:26.129]
up with the skills and knowledge they gained in the
[00:12:28.219]
military,
[00:12:29.469]
You can jump right into the military crosswalk
[00:12:32.320]
and this will take the MOC codes,
[00:12:35.340]
um, or titles of positions held
[00:12:37.450]
in the, uh, military. And then
[00:12:39.500]
you just choose the branch or with.
[00:12:41.849]
And I grabbed a few of these off of,
[00:12:44.090]
of the internet because unfortunately, these were not,
[00:12:46.190]
uh, um, military codes that I was familiar
[00:12:48.538]
with. So let me go ahead and grab
[00:12:50.629]
this off my cheat sheet here
[00:12:52.690]
and this is an Air Air Force code.
[00:12:56.320]
Hi. And then you luckily
[00:12:58.479]
it matches up with the title. So I can just remind myself
[00:13:00.489]
which one I looked that up for. Um,
[00:13:02.678]
so warfare,
[00:13:03.719]
communications, operations, technical track.
[00:13:06.119]
These are careers that I might be well
[00:13:08.239]
suited for for what I did in the military.
[00:13:10.298]
And kind of can examine those.
[00:13:12.479]
Anything that looks good to you, whether it is,
[00:13:15.989]
uh, something like this, a career match or
[00:13:18.099]
maybe on the other pages, you'll often see there's an ad
[00:13:20.308]
to favorites or add to my resources.
[00:13:22.580]
So if I want to keep track of things,
[00:13:24.658]
the resource can do that for me
[00:13:26.700]
and then it's found within my profile
[00:13:28.759]
so I can kind of easily get back.
[00:13:32.519]
So let me just check the chat and the Q
[00:13:34.590]
and A,
[00:13:35.619]
I think we're in good shape so far. I apologize. I know.
[00:13:37.639]
I'm probably moving a little fast. Let me know if you need
[00:13:39.729]
me to slow down or anything. I wanna
[00:13:41.788]
make sure we get to all of our resources
[00:13:44.469]
today. So the career
[00:13:46.619]
assessments again, I would encourage folks
[00:13:48.658]
to answer all four to see their true
[00:13:50.899]
matches
[00:13:51.788]
and I'm gonna skip a step here. So once
[00:13:53.840]
we've done the assessment, there are a few more
[00:13:55.928]
things that are gonna come. Right. If I, if I need to
[00:13:58.000]
go to school, I, I need to pass
[00:14:00.178]
some sort of test to get that job. Let's
[00:14:02.739]
jump forward a roll. Let's say though, I'm ready
[00:14:04.840]
to start applying for jobs. This
[00:14:06.859]
is also where if you'll see in the very top
[00:14:08.969]
of the banner, we have a jobs
[00:14:11.099]
tool
[00:14:12.239]
and this is gonna search for jobs.
[00:14:14.469]
This is basically kind of a centralized
[00:14:17.019]
place. It goes out and crawls other
[00:14:19.109]
websites that list that list
[00:14:21.200]
jobs. So again, maybe I'm interested
[00:14:23.580]
in some of those health science positions.
[00:14:25.729]
But with the skills I have right now the education
[00:14:28.149]
I have right now, I may be looking for
[00:14:30.779]
a physical, uh,
[00:14:33.239]
therapist aid, oops
[00:14:35.710]
aid position and,
[00:14:37.788]
uh, go ahead and use I think a Newark
[00:14:40.070]
zip code here.
[00:14:42.700]
Oh, sorry. Is that not have,
[00:14:45.879]
is it kind of this
[00:14:48.428]
worked fine when I tested it out
[00:14:50.460]
this morning? Let me open up my range
[00:14:52.469]
a little bit.
[00:14:54.000]
Oh,
[00:14:58.869]
let me see. Good bye.
[00:15:01.349]
Uh J folks. Let me uh
[00:15:10.719]
sorry folks, I apologize. I swear I tested
[00:15:13.048]
out the search even earlier.
[00:15:15.308]
Uh
[00:15:16.940]
and I could use a more general one.
[00:15:20.019]
Ok. Appears none of these are working.
[00:15:23.330]
Um,
[00:15:25.889]
s now
[00:15:27.629]
I make a, that might not be the right
[00:15:29.759]
zip code. I apologize. Folks. Looks like we've got
[00:15:31.779]
a question. Oh,
[00:15:33.729]
I, all right. I did have the zip code
[00:15:35.889]
on Facebook folks.
[00:15:37.320]
I appreciate the help here
[00:15:40.460]
most to be 07. Ok.
[00:15:42.769]
That's what I get for typing it instead of copying
[00:15:45.269]
and pasting.
[00:15:50.379]
I am a terrible typist.
[00:15:54.399]
All right, there we go. I appreciate the help folks.
[00:15:56.690]
So here we have
[00:15:58.580]
now, I expanded up to 200
[00:16:00.808]
miles. We might wanna close that range
[00:16:02.889]
down a bit. There we go.
[00:16:04.279]
Um, again, it's still letting me know where
[00:16:06.288]
I matched from because I filled out the career
[00:16:08.330]
assessments. But again, as you can see, we're not beholden
[00:16:10.840]
to what we matched with it. You can always look for
[00:16:12.940]
any type of job.
[00:16:14.308]
And again, this is a, a tool
[00:16:16.440]
that is crawling and searching other job
[00:16:18.700]
sites. So if we go ahead and open these up,
[00:16:20.788]
that's actually if you click on the learn more that's
[00:16:22.918]
where you land is out on that site. So you can get the
[00:16:25.019]
full listing. Plus most
[00:16:27.149]
of these are gonna, you know, offer some sort of
[00:16:29.379]
um if not an application but some
[00:16:31.500]
sort of, you know, form to fill out because you're interested.
[00:16:33.849]
So you really can get the details about
[00:16:36.349]
the work and, and again, maybe
[00:16:38.418]
even apply. So really
[00:16:40.538]
handy tool, it's a nicely, nicely centralized
[00:16:43.509]
uh place to be able to search for work.
[00:16:45.739]
And again, just tie it to uh
[00:16:47.808]
the filters that you may want to take
[00:16:50.288]
advantage of. Um or again, the
[00:16:52.349]
matches that you may have made with the career assessments.
[00:16:55.500]
So handy place and again, kind
[00:16:57.590]
of can do this all from, from one resource,
[00:17:00.129]
which is nice
[00:17:01.379]
before we leave this uh career
[00:17:04.009]
or explore careers tool, I just show
[00:17:06.088]
the last button here in the uh toolbar
[00:17:08.459]
there at the top,
[00:17:09.750]
we'll find again, more help for
[00:17:12.289]
all of these career related tasks. So writing
[00:17:14.420]
resumes, cover letters, how to network,
[00:17:16.838]
going through a job interview or even
[00:17:18.920]
worksheets and paths you can kind of follow
[00:17:21.309]
to again decide on
[00:17:23.378]
careers and, and vocational pathways.
[00:17:25.898]
So lots of great stuff here
[00:17:28.718]
uh in our pathway you section, again,
[00:17:31.317]
titled Explore Careers from the
[00:17:33.398]
home page of the resource. So
[00:17:35.448]
again, we all started
[00:17:37.678]
right here from explore career options.
[00:17:40.659]
And again, we've got options to go other places
[00:17:43.298]
and one we're going to take advantage of
[00:17:45.317]
next is that resume builder?
[00:17:47.337]
So let's say we found some jobs we want to apply
[00:17:49.597]
for.
[00:17:50.959]
This may look a little familiar. Some
[00:17:53.229]
folks have um used this
[00:17:55.309]
themselves. This is uh a tool
[00:17:57.949]
called Visual CV.
[00:17:59.959]
And it exists out there on the internet on its own.
[00:18:02.209]
Folks can buy a membership to it and,
[00:18:04.380]
and store their resumes. You get
[00:18:06.650]
a lot of content from
[00:18:08.789]
the paid version of that tool that's
[00:18:10.890]
out there on the web here in Peterson's
[00:18:13.309]
test and career prep,
[00:18:14.939]
uh really handy. Lots
[00:18:16.979]
of great stuff here is um
[00:18:19.209]
I think it's a great tool for a beginner. You know,
[00:18:21.299]
again, maybe that high school student who's writing their first
[00:18:23.568]
resume or, you know, college graduate
[00:18:25.890]
to someone who maybe has had a career
[00:18:28.328]
and just needs a little inspiration. I
[00:18:30.420]
certainly, you know, want my resume to look good,
[00:18:32.729]
but I don't quite have those creative skills
[00:18:34.809]
myself. So this has a lot of great templates
[00:18:37.289]
to work from
[00:18:38.890]
and my favorite part,
[00:18:40.500]
the resume examples. So
[00:18:42.529]
to me, a blank piece of paper
[00:18:44.759]
or, you know, like we, we often hear from writers
[00:18:46.949]
is the scariest thing, right? So what
[00:18:49.219]
I love to show here is if we're ready to create
[00:18:51.420]
a resume,
[00:18:52.400]
give you a few different options. You can upload one
[00:18:54.660]
you've used before. So if you in word
[00:18:56.739]
or PDF, you can upload an
[00:18:58.858]
existing resume and it will work with the content
[00:19:00.930]
there. And of course, you can always edit it and,
[00:19:03.289]
and uh make changes.
[00:19:05.910]
You can also start from scratch. Maybe you want
[00:19:07.939]
that blank piece of paper, piece of
[00:19:09.979]
paper to start with.
[00:19:11.568]
But my favorite is right here in the middle use example
[00:19:14.449]
content. So what this gives you
[00:19:17.118]
is tons, hundreds,
[00:19:19.229]
if not thousands of resume examples.
[00:19:22.380]
So if you can find a similar one
[00:19:24.449]
to a job, you've held, you see
[00:19:26.769]
the things listed and can maybe
[00:19:28.838]
reword it, you know, put it in your own voice
[00:19:31.509]
and kind of get that started rather than
[00:19:33.588]
just again, starting from that blank page.
[00:19:35.838]
So you can search by the type
[00:19:37.930]
of job. So maybe
[00:19:40.318]
it worked as a home health aide.
[00:19:43.459]
I found a resume for us.
[00:19:45.529]
We can take a little look at it, see if it suits
[00:19:47.699]
our needs. I understand the text. There is pretty small. I'm
[00:19:49.750]
just gonna go ahead and select it
[00:19:51.920]
and basically it starts a resume
[00:19:54.029]
using all that example content
[00:19:56.150]
and plugs in your name. You need to of course,
[00:19:58.199]
go through it and make adjustments, your contact
[00:20:00.390]
info and the like.
[00:20:01.608]
But then you can go through reading the summary here.
[00:20:03.979]
Does this line up with what you did?
[00:20:06.390]
And also the other thing I like for
[00:20:08.400]
it is of course, it's showing us typical tasks
[00:20:10.789]
in these jobs,
[00:20:12.348]
but
[00:20:13.309]
you can of course edit it and add in other
[00:20:15.439]
things, but it gives you the inspiration kind of
[00:20:17.459]
puts it in that resume speak.
[00:20:19.598]
Uh that is sometimes difficult to do
[00:20:21.750]
or it reminds you of things you did
[00:20:23.759]
in the job that you may not have remembered. So
[00:20:26.199]
the example content I think is just really
[00:20:28.420]
strong and again, it just gets
[00:20:30.430]
you started.
[00:20:32.180]
Hi, you can also, again change
[00:20:34.289]
the way this looks. So just at the top here,
[00:20:36.459]
we can change things like the font. If we wanna
[00:20:38.630]
mix that up,
[00:20:40.680]
go with something else here can change
[00:20:42.709]
the color scheme, the font size.
[00:20:45.459]
And if you look over to the left
[00:20:47.920]
uh in the menu on the left here, we have a templates
[00:20:50.519]
tool so we can pick something
[00:20:52.559]
else. If I want something, you know, a
[00:20:55.049]
little more visual, I
[00:20:58.439]
you can grab something from
[00:21:00.699]
the list select and it'll just
[00:21:02.809]
switch the template for you
[00:21:05.848]
and again, can make changes as needed.
[00:21:08.838]
I can always go back and get to the resume.
[00:21:10.868]
Examples, can change the page
[00:21:13.098]
layout can play around with a lot of these
[00:21:15.309]
tools here.
[00:21:16.559]
What I do like to always point out though is
[00:21:18.729]
the settings are important here.
[00:21:21.209]
So as we're working on our resume, we can
[00:21:23.239]
always download it can always export
[00:21:25.328]
it, pull it out, keep it on our hard
[00:21:27.338]
drive. If you're at the library can you
[00:21:29.358]
know, move it to a flash drive or something like that,
[00:21:31.959]
you also though have the ability to make
[00:21:33.989]
this available online.
[00:21:35.739]
So by default, when
[00:21:37.848]
you create a resume, it's in a privacy
[00:21:40.250]
mode, we call export only, meaning
[00:21:42.699]
that you're really the only one that has access
[00:21:44.838]
to it. You come into the resource, you need to
[00:21:46.930]
export it to get it to other people.
[00:21:49.118]
So again, export it in word and
[00:21:51.289]
PDF and then you share it out as
[00:21:53.368]
needed.
[00:21:54.430]
You can change this though to
[00:21:56.618]
a couple other options. Unlisted
[00:21:58.848]
is kind of the next level up. What
[00:22:00.890]
it will do is create a URL
[00:22:02.959]
for that resume. So this is something I could copy
[00:22:05.348]
and paste and maybe put into a cover letter
[00:22:07.430]
or an email and folks can
[00:22:09.439]
click it and land right on it.
[00:22:11.250]
However, it's not indexed by search
[00:22:13.338]
engines. So you really have to have that
[00:22:15.358]
URL to find it. It's just not out there
[00:22:17.459]
on the open web where anybody could come across
[00:22:19.880]
it. They need that URL
[00:22:22.180]
for you and you share that with again,
[00:22:24.209]
wherever it needs to go,
[00:22:26.348]
then the the furthest level up
[00:22:28.670]
and the least level of privacy is public
[00:22:31.250]
and same thing, you're going to get a URL
[00:22:33.400]
that you can share with others, but it also would be searchable
[00:22:35.939]
online.
[00:22:36.818]
So folks could find it just
[00:22:38.900]
by searching your name and you may want
[00:22:40.930]
that again, folks may wanna, you know, share
[00:22:43.279]
as much as possible and get their name
[00:22:45.299]
out there. Uh But those
[00:22:47.529]
are kind of your options. And again, by default,
[00:22:50.509]
you always have the highest level of privacy where
[00:22:52.739]
you have to export it and pull it out.
[00:22:55.059]
So I'm gonna make sure to set that back for
[00:22:57.108]
mine. Um I do not
[00:22:59.309]
have this work experience, so I don't want to put that
[00:23:01.380]
out on the internet. So it's good,
[00:23:03.039]
make sure to click save
[00:23:04.459]
so that it doesn't go anywhere. But again,
[00:23:06.539]
that's under setting. So you can always go
[00:23:08.689]
back and change it, adjust as needed.
[00:23:12.618]
The other great thing here is you get to keep
[00:23:14.880]
multiple versions of your resume.
[00:23:17.318]
So I've got several going here that I've created
[00:23:19.689]
in other training sessions.
[00:23:22.239]
This way, you can change it as needed
[00:23:24.549]
for
[00:23:25.868]
different types of jobs or, you know, maybe
[00:23:28.019]
even different fields. If folks are switching industry,
[00:23:30.239]
switching careers, you know, they may have resumes
[00:23:32.578]
suited for what they did before and maybe what they're,
[00:23:35.029]
they're ready to do next. So you can keep different
[00:23:37.059]
versions of that. You can also do
[00:23:39.140]
the same with cover letters. Again, a lot of help
[00:23:41.420]
to get those written, can even
[00:23:43.500]
create a website um
[00:23:45.779]
about yourself. So maybe a portfolio
[00:23:47.848]
of content, you've produced things like that.
[00:23:50.459]
And there's also a career journal where you can
[00:23:53.039]
kind of keep track of your accomplishments,
[00:23:55.130]
which again, that's something, you know, as it's
[00:23:57.189]
happening in your life, you may note it and be thrilled
[00:23:59.479]
about it. And then a year later when you're writing a resume, you've
[00:24:01.650]
forgotten all about it. So the career
[00:24:04.309]
um journal is a great way to keep track
[00:24:06.459]
of those kind of milestones.
[00:24:09.559]
Ok. Moving fast here, I'm gonna jump
[00:24:11.709]
back to the, the main page of the resource
[00:24:14.420]
and we'll share a few more things. So
[00:24:17.420]
we pretty much we've done all our work here from
[00:24:19.640]
again on the home page under explore
[00:24:21.750]
career options, wanna point out
[00:24:24.108]
the test prep options. So if someone has
[00:24:26.170]
decided to go for a career where maybe it requires a civil
[00:24:28.459]
service exam or some other
[00:24:30.529]
sort of certification, we have
[00:24:32.699]
a ton of vocational related career or
[00:24:34.769]
test prep you can find here
[00:24:37.174]
and this grows all the time. Um
[00:24:39.223]
For example, under medical and nursing, I would say
[00:24:41.604]
in the time we've had access to the database, it's probably
[00:24:43.943]
quadrupled the number of tests that are available
[00:24:46.104]
there. So always kind of, you
[00:24:48.134]
know, keep an eye on this, it will add new,
[00:24:50.344]
new ones all the time. So if we jump in the same
[00:24:52.443]
medical and nursing,
[00:24:54.348]
now, often what you'll find our exam,
[00:24:56.949]
our practice exams and exam
[00:24:59.338]
props. So kind of study tools
[00:25:01.519]
uh to get ready for that exam as well.
[00:25:03.660]
So lots of nursing related tools.
[00:25:06.140]
Um Those were big requests when
[00:25:08.180]
we, when we launched this resource, some newer
[00:25:10.479]
ones that have got it added back in, they are not
[00:25:12.519]
added back and got it added like a pharmacy
[00:25:14.868]
technician EMT exams.
[00:25:17.368]
Health care has been a, a much a really popular
[00:25:19.719]
area uh for this resource
[00:25:22.279]
and there's our physical therapy assistant
[00:25:24.299]
exam prep.
[00:25:25.848]
Now, when you jump into this, our
[00:25:27.890]
test preps all follow a pretty
[00:25:30.229]
similar format. What's
[00:25:32.279]
gonna vary is of course, how the actual exam
[00:25:34.608]
is, is, uh, administered. So, if it's a time
[00:25:36.989]
test, if it's an untime test, you're gonna see all
[00:25:39.229]
of those things built into the practice
[00:25:41.598]
exams. Again, you're also gonna get
[00:25:43.719]
for many of these exam prep. So ways
[00:25:45.969]
to study almost like working through a course
[00:25:48.618]
to get ready for the exam. So again, if you
[00:25:50.759]
picture those big Peterson's books,
[00:25:52.789]
you know, really, it's the last quarter
[00:25:55.130]
of the book that is practice exams, the
[00:25:57.140]
rest is all prep right to explain
[00:25:59.160]
the exam. So that's what you'll see here too.
[00:26:01.318]
We've got lots of paths we can use to
[00:26:03.338]
study and then you get into the actual
[00:26:05.368]
practice exams themselves. There are usually a few
[00:26:08.108]
so you can take it a couple times.
[00:26:10.250]
Um, Peterson's doesn't recommend,
[00:26:12.818]
you know, starting to memorize answers and things like that.
[00:26:14.848]
So they'd like to offer more than one version of the exam.
[00:26:17.939]
You get a little welcome. Let you know how it's
[00:26:19.969]
gonna run through and then you just start
[00:26:22.209]
and work through the exam
[00:26:24.209]
and I'm just gonna answer a couple here
[00:26:26.289]
so I can show you what it does after you've examined,
[00:26:28.979]
uh, taken the exam.
[00:26:30.848]
I'm gonna go ahead and submit which I've only
[00:26:32.900]
answered three questions. But, uh, we
[00:26:35.239]
want to see what that looks like. So
[00:26:37.199]
warns me that I'm not answering most
[00:26:39.219]
of the questions here, but that's all right.
[00:26:41.400]
We wanna get to the grading
[00:26:43.439]
so you can see
[00:26:45.209]
what is uh
[00:26:47.348]
what it's gonna share with us. So it's gonna take me
[00:26:49.479]
through
[00:26:51.118]
my answers basically. And you can see
[00:26:53.318]
where you went wrong and where you went right
[00:26:55.578]
in an explanation for where you went wrong.
[00:26:58.029]
So I did not randomly
[00:27:00.068]
select the correct answer here for question number
[00:27:02.250]
one. And we get um an answer.
[00:27:04.509]
So we learn from where we went wrong, right?
[00:27:06.848]
And can again, go back into that study prep.
[00:27:09.479]
You've also got the other prep
[00:27:11.910]
I like to mention here is the foundational
[00:27:14.219]
skills tool. So this is,
[00:27:16.818]
you know, some things that folks may want to brush up on
[00:27:18.910]
if say somebody needs to get their GED for
[00:27:20.969]
the career they're interested in and they're not ready
[00:27:23.130]
for the GED yet. You can go into say math
[00:27:25.479]
and science, reading and writing and build up some
[00:27:27.568]
basic skills and just,
[00:27:29.930]
you know, work through some of these tutorials
[00:27:32.078]
and question banks to kind of build up those
[00:27:34.088]
skills. It's also got
[00:27:36.229]
some handy um
[00:27:38.910]
help for, oh sorry, let me go
[00:27:41.019]
back uh computer
[00:27:43.568]
basic skills, working with different Microsoft programs
[00:27:46.078]
and Windows. Um So for again,
[00:27:48.098]
maybe folks heading into a job, they want to brush
[00:27:50.108]
up on their Excel skills or something like that,
[00:27:52.199]
you've got tutorials to go along with that.
[00:27:54.380]
So again, you can build up those skills, be
[00:27:56.439]
able to put things on a resume, apply for
[00:27:58.618]
jobs, maybe wouldn't have, you know, felt
[00:28:00.779]
comfortable applying for
[00:28:03.009]
before you brush up on these skills.
[00:28:05.180]
So, ok, lots
[00:28:07.299]
of stuff. Let me just double check my
[00:28:09.479]
um
[00:28:11.779]
notes here. I think I had everything
[00:28:14.209]
I wanted to. I don't think there's anything
[00:28:16.529]
I'm just gonna double check the chat and the Q and
[00:28:18.559]
A
[00:28:21.029]
and in good shape there.
[00:28:26.848]
No, there we are. Ok. So
[00:28:28.900]
let me pop back and to
[00:28:31.098]
the powerpoint and share
[00:28:33.809]
our uh contact info
[00:28:36.150]
and where you can find some great materials.
[00:28:44.098]
All righty. So our support
[00:28:46.299]
site for our new Jersey libraries
[00:28:48.479]
is support.gal.com/njsl.
[00:28:52.358]
And here you will find, you know, kind
[00:28:54.368]
of the access and product info
[00:28:56.729]
could be all set there, you know, file, I have
[00:28:58.930]
got your, your link set up and everything,
[00:29:00.989]
but there's other good tech support information
[00:29:03.338]
there as well, how to user reports and things
[00:29:05.434]
like that.
[00:29:06.634]
You'll also find our training center, we have lots
[00:29:08.834]
of materials ready to go. So say you're
[00:29:10.875]
gonna work Peterson's into
[00:29:13.104]
maybe of course your offering around
[00:29:15.203]
careers and job searches. We've got
[00:29:17.305]
handouts you can use. There's also
[00:29:19.344]
great marketing materials. If you want to let folks
[00:29:21.625]
know you have this, you know, maybe share with local
[00:29:25.039]
uh organizations or employment
[00:29:27.068]
offices and things like that. We have
[00:29:29.108]
bookmarks. We even have social media posts
[00:29:31.439]
that are ready to go. Uh lots of other
[00:29:33.729]
digital assets you can take advantage of,
[00:29:35.949]
you know, no need to recreate the wheel. We've got
[00:29:38.059]
a lot of great stuff out there uh for
[00:29:40.130]
you to take advantage of even training
[00:29:42.368]
uh slide decks. So that if you again
[00:29:44.578]
are, are offering this as some sort of a program,
[00:29:47.289]
we've got slides ready for you.
[00:29:50.170]
Ok. We also offer
[00:29:52.279]
from the support site ways to make the resource
[00:29:54.559]
more discoverable. So if
[00:29:56.699]
you want to maybe on your website,
[00:29:58.779]
you've got a page dedicated to the job and career
[00:30:01.118]
help. And you want to let folks know about
[00:30:03.519]
this resource, we have of course
[00:30:05.739]
the link to get to the database, but we also have
[00:30:07.949]
subject hub
[00:30:09.269]
links and ebook links. So
[00:30:11.289]
folks can get directly to different parts
[00:30:13.739]
of the resource. So if I wanna make sure
[00:30:15.900]
folks know about the reading and writing basic skills
[00:30:18.328]
tools that are available, you can get
[00:30:20.539]
what we call the subject tub link P
[00:30:22.969]
links to put right on
[00:30:25.009]
your web page. Um You can also
[00:30:27.049]
get mark records for these. So along
[00:30:29.289]
not just the ebooks but for the subject hubs
[00:30:31.309]
as well. So if folks come into your catalog
[00:30:33.549]
and do a search on the GED,
[00:30:35.789]
they would get a link right into Peterson's
[00:30:38.250]
where you can find all that GED test prep
[00:30:40.449]
support.
[00:30:41.880]
So again, those are available from
[00:30:44.039]
the support site and you have questions about any
[00:30:46.358]
of this you can of course ask now, but
[00:30:48.640]
should it come later? Um You can
[00:30:50.759]
always reach out to your team at Gale again.
[00:30:52.799]
I'm your trainer. So feel free to reach out
[00:30:54.969]
to me.
[00:30:55.930]
Um Oh, all of this information on this slide
[00:30:58.098]
here is gonna be in the follow up email that you will receive,
[00:31:00.118]
you'll receive tomorrow. Around this time. You can
[00:31:02.140]
also reach out to your customer success manager
[00:31:04.630]
at Gale uh as well as
[00:31:06.838]
our tech support group. So
[00:31:09.150]
no shortage of people to go to for help
[00:31:11.400]
uh with your gale resources. We
[00:31:13.608]
want to hear your feedback too. So feel free
[00:31:15.650]
to share that you don't have to come to us just with questions,
[00:31:18.358]
we wanna know what's working for you in the resources,
[00:31:20.568]
what you could use more of again, going
[00:31:22.809]
back to um you know, those
[00:31:24.939]
the uh exam prep that we
[00:31:27.059]
have in the resource that keeps growing because
[00:31:29.219]
people keep telling us the new things they want.
[00:31:31.769]
So definitely send in those requests.
[00:31:34.049]
We wanna know what your patrons
[00:31:36.439]
and students are are looking for.
[00:31:39.269]
So with that, I will let you all go to enjoy
[00:31:41.338]
the rest of your day. Thanks so much for tuning
[00:31:43.400]
in. And again, please take that link with you
[00:31:45.578]
um from the chat that, that Michael
[00:31:47.680]
shared, so you can share your feedback.
[00:31:50.009]
Um And again, feel free to reach out.
[00:31:52.239]
You'll get my email tomorrow around this time with
[00:31:54.269]
all of our contact info.
[00:31:56.108]
Uh And I'm happy to uh hear from you.
[00:31:58.729]
So, oh, and there we go. Thanks, Michael. You shared that again
[00:32:00.868]
there at the end. So thanks all for
[00:32:03.019]
tuning in.
[00:32:06.108]
Oh, great question in the chat. So do this
[00:32:08.239]
direct subject links, respects
[00:32:10.299]
institutional proxy, URL
[00:32:12.400]
S I, they do
[00:32:14.519]
for most of our resources. Let me double
[00:32:16.868]
check that they do for Peterson's. I'll
[00:32:18.920]
make sure I've got an answer for that. That comes
[00:32:21.229]
in the follow up email. I think they
[00:32:23.400]
do, but I don't want
[00:32:25.500]
to say that without double checking something on
[00:32:27.509]
our support site.
[00:32:29.890]
Uh
[00:32:30.910]
So let me just confirm
[00:32:33.318]
it for
[00:32:38.199]
both the subject hubs and the Mark
[00:32:40.500]
records,
[00:32:42.160]
but I'll, I'll let you know for sure. Thank you, Angela.
[00:32:44.328]
That's a great question. I'll um, again,
[00:32:46.368]
make sure to get you an answer tomorrow in
[00:32:48.608]
the uh follow up email.
[00:32:51.489]
Mhm. All
[00:32:54.259]
right.
[00:32:55.608]
I'm gonna go ahead and stop the recording.
