Duration: 30 Minutes
[00:00:05.408]
All right. Hello everyone and welcome to

[00:00:07.629]
our Gale 101 gale in Context

[00:00:10.198]
Elementary.

[00:00:11.470]
Uh I'm Stacy Niblo, our team lead

[00:00:13.710]
for the Gale training team. And I'm

[00:00:15.829]
glad to be with you virtually to show off

[00:00:17.888]
this resource. Uh We started offering

[00:00:20.059]
these one on one sessions to kind of give

[00:00:22.129]
folks just a good baseline of information about

[00:00:24.399]
the resource and all the tools within.

[00:00:26.789]
Uh So I'm happy to uh to share that

[00:00:28.870]
with you all today. What we're gonna look

[00:00:31.059]
at is giving an overview

[00:00:33.539]
of the resource kind of how we put

[00:00:35.569]
it together, who our audience is

[00:00:37.777]
and then walk you through a couple product

[00:00:40.039]
integrations that we have. We can actually bring

[00:00:42.298]
in some other content from other gale

[00:00:44.387]
resources into Gale and context elementary.

[00:00:47.277]
And then I'm gonna walk you through the platform. So different

[00:00:49.539]
search paths and different tools that

[00:00:51.698]
you and um

[00:00:53.609]
uh students and young users

[00:00:55.759]
can take advantage of. And then as always,

[00:00:58.139]
we'll wrap up with our contact info at gail,

[00:01:00.319]
how you can reach out to us if you've got questions after

[00:01:02.569]
today. Um I'll also

[00:01:04.620]
take questions though throughout. So feel free to

[00:01:06.760]
send those into the chat or the Q and A any

[00:01:08.838]
time, uh, happy to take those as

[00:01:10.859]
they come to you rather than having you wait to the end

[00:01:13.260]
and, um, you know, maybe

[00:01:15.540]
forget what you were gonna ask. So, feel free to

[00:01:17.629]
ask those or if there's something you'd like to see

[00:01:19.870]
anything in particular, um, feel free to

[00:01:21.900]
share that in the chat or the Q and A as well.

[00:01:24.528]
Um, I am happy to take

[00:01:26.558]
a left turn. So please don't hold

[00:01:28.650]
back. Let me know what you'd like to see and

[00:01:30.739]
we'll wrap up then and get you out of here

[00:01:32.760]
on time. Uh So you can move on to the next part

[00:01:34.939]
of your day. So

[00:01:36.379]
um let's go ahead and dive in with our resource overview.

[00:01:40.329]
So gel and context elementary and let

[00:01:42.359]
me apologize at this point.

[00:01:44.558]
Um I that is how

[00:01:46.579]
I pronounce elementary. It's um

[00:01:48.829]
how we do it here in Western New York where I live.

[00:01:51.120]
So uh you'll hear it a lot more

[00:01:53.250]
through the session. So let's

[00:01:55.299]
go ahead and talk about what this resource offers

[00:01:57.609]
you. So gale in context

[00:02:00.058]
elementary is built as you can imagine

[00:02:02.299]
for our elementary age users.

[00:02:04.739]
So I, I say users,

[00:02:06.750]
but I should probably really define that better as

[00:02:08.860]
elementary reading level uh

[00:02:11.028]
users. So it is content

[00:02:13.179]
geared at grades K through five and

[00:02:15.808]
of course reading level within those ranges.

[00:02:17.919]
And we're gonna talk about ways you can make that a little more

[00:02:19.969]
specific when you're using the resource.

[00:02:22.288]
But along with building that reading

[00:02:24.460]
level appropriate content, we're also building in content

[00:02:27.038]
to fit what's happening in the K

[00:02:29.139]
five classrooms. So we look at

[00:02:31.689]
uh curriculum

[00:02:33.520]
across various states and

[00:02:36.110]
uh sorry, getting a little ahead of my slides here, we look

[00:02:38.229]
at curriculum across various states to

[00:02:40.330]
meet the needs of that classroom

[00:02:42.558]
and any research that's being done

[00:02:44.649]
um as well as providing materials that

[00:02:46.669]
teachers can put to use in the classroom. And of

[00:02:48.679]
course, it's a perfect fit in the library where

[00:02:50.778]
kids are getting their feet wet around research

[00:02:53.399]
and using online resources like this.

[00:02:55.960]
Uh The database is made up

[00:02:57.969]
of periodical articles,

[00:03:00.129]
news, upcoming various news and magazines

[00:03:02.429]
aimed at younger users. We've got

[00:03:04.538]
lots of multimedia and images and video

[00:03:06.949]
and uh you'll also find a good

[00:03:09.110]
base of reference content.

[00:03:11.599]
So good articles to start them

[00:03:13.770]
with to get to know about a topic,

[00:03:15.788]
you know, similar to what they might find in a textbook.

[00:03:19.229]
We also want to build in tools

[00:03:21.679]
that make this resource

[00:03:23.778]
reach everyone. So there are a variety

[00:03:26.020]
of ways you can work with the content.

[00:03:28.229]
You can listen, you can translate it, you can

[00:03:30.659]
uh change the formatting of an article

[00:03:33.020]
to help fit the user.

[00:03:35.139]
You've also got integrations that hopefully

[00:03:37.439]
fit into your workflow as well. So if you are

[00:03:39.629]
a Google or Micro, so school um

[00:03:41.675]
or user, we have ways you can send your

[00:03:43.705]
content right to those tools. And

[00:03:46.183]
of course, we want to build good researchers,

[00:03:48.413]
right? So you're gonna find tools in here like highlights

[00:03:50.645]
and notes and our citation tool to

[00:03:52.694]
help kids do those things they need

[00:03:55.064]
to do when they are researching

[00:03:57.224]
and, and really just kind of build their media literacy

[00:03:59.764]
and, and information literacy.

[00:04:03.270]
And then lastly here, I'll mention again,

[00:04:05.508]
this is a great resource to start

[00:04:07.699]
getting kids used to doing

[00:04:10.020]
research in databases like these and maybe

[00:04:12.580]
staying away from some places that

[00:04:14.830]
uh you know, like Google or Microsoft, uh what's

[00:04:17.238]
they called bing? Um That could be really

[00:04:19.338]
overwhelming or sending them off to sites

[00:04:21.369]
you may not recommend for their readings.

[00:04:23.778]
Um This is a safe place to send

[00:04:25.798]
kids to do research. It's again

[00:04:27.819]
targeted to their age ranges. So

[00:04:29.970]
again, appropriate as we talked about in reading

[00:04:32.069]
level and content and curriculum,

[00:04:34.528]
it also gives them a good place to start getting

[00:04:36.720]
comfortable with searching and maybe filtering

[00:04:38.949]
and again, using all those tools that they

[00:04:40.959]
might need um

[00:04:43.189]
in the research process. So

[00:04:45.108]
we are again, gonna take a look at everything.

[00:04:47.278]
I've got just a few slides to give you kind of the basics

[00:04:49.519]
though of how this database is built.

[00:04:51.869]
So we have a search of

[00:04:53.899]
course, but we also wanna make this

[00:04:55.980]
resource brows we find especially for

[00:04:58.160]
younger users as they're building their information

[00:05:00.500]
literacy.

[00:05:01.720]
It's a great way to kind of show them how we deal with

[00:05:03.738]
information. You take a big topic

[00:05:05.778]
and start narrowing it down. And as

[00:05:07.858]
you can imagine, we target these topics

[00:05:10.259]
based on what's being studied in curriculum.

[00:05:12.980]
So you'll probably see some familiar topics

[00:05:15.290]
here. Animals is probably, are

[00:05:17.588]
always our most popular, uh uh path

[00:05:20.439]
to go down here. So we see we

[00:05:22.579]
start breaking down. So animals as a whole,

[00:05:24.670]
then mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

[00:05:27.069]
So we're learning a little bit maybe about classification

[00:05:29.588]
there, but also just how information is

[00:05:31.639]
organized.

[00:05:33.019]
And then we drill down to a third level

[00:05:35.238]
to get a little more specific. So here we're getting

[00:05:37.420]
at types of animals

[00:05:40.358]
and then we land on a topic

[00:05:42.428]
page. So the topic pages are

[00:05:44.588]
kind of where we pull in all the information

[00:05:47.000]
we have for a topic.

[00:05:48.759]
It's a good jumping off point to learn

[00:05:50.778]
about something. It's often maybe a unit

[00:05:53.170]
you'd be covering in the classroom or in the library.

[00:05:56.750]
And the way we organize these is to start

[00:05:58.970]
out with a topic overview. So

[00:06:01.189]
you get this simple

[00:06:03.309]
overview too, in this case, Tyrannosaurus

[00:06:05.548]
rex and even just that first paragraph

[00:06:08.108]
that we gives us a little info,

[00:06:10.480]
then we've got some quick facts we can take a look

[00:06:12.660]
at. So some good information around

[00:06:15.230]
um some few, you know, some trivia, maybe almost

[00:06:17.678]
um around the tyrannosaurus rex.

[00:06:19.809]
And then we organize the content the

[00:06:21.910]
same way that it might be organized in your

[00:06:24.069]
classroom or in your library, we

[00:06:26.170]
keep reference books together. We keep

[00:06:28.600]
our nonfiction books together. We keep

[00:06:30.720]
our magazines, our news and so on

[00:06:33.119]
and they can work through those various spaces.

[00:06:35.600]
So of course, we're going to see this in action here in a

[00:06:37.619]
minute. But again, just to give you an idea of how

[00:06:39.629]
we put this database together,

[00:06:42.869]
we also the one to integrate with

[00:06:45.009]
other content from Gale that is

[00:06:47.129]
aimed at that K five age range.

[00:06:49.459]
So if you are also a subscribe, oh sorry,

[00:06:52.278]
not subscriber. If you are also a p

[00:06:54.088]
purchaser of Gale ebooks,

[00:06:56.709]
those that are within that reading

[00:06:58.798]
level are gonna be available

[00:07:01.298]
in your gal and context elementary

[00:07:03.548]
if that's not happening at your library and

[00:07:05.639]
you do have access to both resources.

[00:07:08.220]
Again, I'm gonna share our contact info, you'll want to reach

[00:07:10.420]
out to us and let us know and we can work on that for

[00:07:12.528]
you. So where you'll find the Gale

[00:07:14.670]
Ebook content integrated is actually right on

[00:07:16.738]
the home page. We've got a few browsing

[00:07:18.819]
paths for a specific document

[00:07:21.449]
types or, or uh types of, of information.

[00:07:24.470]
So you'll be able to actually browse those

[00:07:26.509]
ebooks there and then they're also

[00:07:28.519]
integrated with your search results. They'll just get dedicated

[00:07:30.928]
in a books uh content type. So

[00:07:32.980]
you can grab the, the books you need that relate

[00:07:35.309]
to the topic you searched on

[00:07:37.548]
right, we also provide this similar

[00:07:39.910]
integration to National Geographic

[00:07:42.309]
Kids. So again, if you're a subscriber to National

[00:07:44.579]
Geographic Kids, this should be happening

[00:07:47.069]
for you as well. And same thing you're

[00:07:49.459]
actually on the home page from Galen Context Elementary,

[00:07:52.019]
gonna be able to browse issues of the magazine

[00:07:55.199]
and then within your search results,

[00:07:57.509]
you're gonna find content from, of course, the magazine,

[00:07:59.949]
but then also from NET GEO kids

[00:08:02.079]
books that are in that collection and then

[00:08:04.238]
audio and video will be integrated as well.

[00:08:06.428]
So

[00:08:07.250]
um I'm gonna demonstrate from an account that

[00:08:09.369]
has both of these integrations. So we can, we can

[00:08:11.420]
see them in action. Uh

[00:08:13.970]
The content does go to specific

[00:08:16.559]
places. So if you're not a subscriber,

[00:08:18.759]
you wouldn't maybe see the or not, maybe

[00:08:21.069]
you wouldn't see the uh books

[00:08:23.639]
content type on your search results.

[00:08:25.889]
So, um I'll and again, I'll share that when

[00:08:28.009]
we, when we get in there. So let's go ahead and

[00:08:30.108]
get in the la in the library source and

[00:08:32.210]
take a look.

[00:08:33.719]
So I've already gone ahead and logged

[00:08:36.070]
in here. I'm on the home page and let me

[00:08:38.109]
just, I'm gonna make things

[00:08:40.200]
a little bigger for your end of the webinar. I'm also

[00:08:42.210]
gonna just turn off my video. Uh So

[00:08:44.259]
it doesn't distract or block any of the screen here while

[00:08:46.418]
I'm live in the database.

[00:08:48.808]
All righty. So

[00:08:50.808]
uh Gill and Context Elementary home

[00:08:52.889]
page is going to offer a search

[00:08:55.200]
so you can dive right in, but we like

[00:08:57.219]
to encourage curiosity. So

[00:08:59.450]
on the home page, we do have some brows

[00:09:01.719]
areas here relating to specific

[00:09:03.849]
types of content. So we're gonna come back

[00:09:06.038]
and use the topic tree a few times. So let me just show you a

[00:09:08.048]
couple of these others.

[00:09:09.519]
Again, books is where content

[00:09:11.690]
from Gale ebooks would live. So if you've

[00:09:13.719]
purchased Gale ebooks,

[00:09:15.849]
those that are appropriate for K five

[00:09:17.859]
reading levels will flow to this

[00:09:20.009]
brows page. So you can open up this

[00:09:22.229]
Amelia Earhart book

[00:09:24.210]
and actually just start reading it cover to cover

[00:09:26.320]
right from the home page. So again, nice

[00:09:28.609]
and browseable can again, encourage curiosity

[00:09:31.668]
and and find some great content.

[00:09:34.340]
So take a minute to load here.

[00:09:38.048]
Bye.

[00:09:39.779]
Let this fill in. So apologize,

[00:09:42.168]
folks. My internet may be a little slow. I hope it's not interfering

[00:09:44.570]
too much on your end of the uh

[00:09:47.158]
session.

[00:09:49.149]
So letting it load up here while

[00:09:51.219]
it's loading, let me share. We do offer some tools.

[00:09:53.918]
Um This is a um

[00:09:56.729]
mobile responsive resource. Really all

[00:09:58.830]
of our gale resources are. So regardless

[00:10:01.538]
of kind of what

[00:10:02.369]
kind of size screen you're using, what type of device

[00:10:04.570]
you're using our resources should work just fine.

[00:10:06.599]
One of the neat things about the book content

[00:10:08.849]
is of course, we're seeing it as if it's laying

[00:10:11.080]
flat on the table. If you're working from a touch

[00:10:13.149]
screen, you can actually swipe to turn the pages.

[00:10:15.320]
Of course, we've got the arrows here, little progress

[00:10:18.000]
bar at the bottom to be able to move through,

[00:10:20.379]
you can zoom in and out and take advantage

[00:10:22.649]
of our listen tool, which I'm gonna go into a little more detail

[00:10:24.840]
later. The other feature I like

[00:10:26.950]
here when you're working with our ebooks is you

[00:10:29.000]
can switch to a full screen view. So the book

[00:10:31.048]
just takes over your page, uh

[00:10:33.200]
which is a great way again to immerse yourself

[00:10:35.399]
in the content.

[00:10:37.080]
So

[00:10:38.519]
again, if you have gale ebooks,

[00:10:40.759]
you will have that option there.

[00:10:42.869]
We also pull in news content

[00:10:44.918]
to browse through. So maybe looking for current events,

[00:10:48.250]
we've got pictures to browse

[00:10:50.389]
as well. So again, just trying

[00:10:52.690]
to, you know,

[00:10:53.840]
share some ways to discover new content

[00:10:57.229]
and get in, I'm gonna ahead and jump into its picture of an Alpaca

[00:11:00.779]
and there we have it our images.

[00:11:02.869]
If you do right, mouse click over kids can copy

[00:11:05.139]
and paste these. So if they're preparing some sort of presentation

[00:11:07.769]
or something, they can take advantage.

[00:11:09.489]
And of course, we want them

[00:11:11.629]
to cite where they got this content,

[00:11:13.729]
right? So we give them a little helping hand here

[00:11:15.889]
with our citation tool. Now,

[00:11:18.139]
in elementary school, it maybe

[00:11:20.168]
isn't the time you're talking about the difference between

[00:11:22.379]
ML A and A P A and all the various.

[00:11:24.450]
But of course, we do talk about needing to

[00:11:26.489]
site where we found our content.

[00:11:28.259]
So you've got a few different paths here.

[00:11:30.379]
Um But it, it gets them thinking about

[00:11:33.639]
that citation and building a work cited

[00:11:35.750]
page. And again, uh should

[00:11:38.109]
you need specific citation styles? You can

[00:11:40.219]
s select the text and copy and paste

[00:11:42.460]
that right where you need it?

[00:11:43.879]
Um Your citation will also go with

[00:11:46.149]
you to other places. So if you have

[00:11:48.288]
a tool like noodle tools or easy

[00:11:50.308]
bib or even can send this out to Google Drive or Microsoft

[00:11:52.779]
Onedrive can send that citation

[00:11:54.788]
out. So we're gonna talk

[00:11:56.899]
about those integrations a a little more later

[00:12:01.298]
we can, oh, I think I need to, sorry, I need

[00:12:03.428]
to, to go all the way back to the home page. Bear with me just a second

[00:12:05.558]
here while I get all the way back out there.

[00:12:08.279]
And again, I apologize, folks, things that seem to be moving

[00:12:10.500]
a little slowly which is of course

[00:12:12.788]
what happens when you are on

[00:12:14.940]
a uh

[00:12:16.979]
webinar rather than when you're just in the database

[00:12:19.090]
for yourself. So we pull in some of our multimedia

[00:12:21.629]
content as well here on uh the videos

[00:12:24.340]
you can flip through these

[00:12:26.619]
and I'm gonna jump into

[00:12:28.719]
one here again. I love the animals

[00:12:30.798]
content. So taking advantage of a few of these,

[00:12:33.369]
most of our videos are gonna offer a transcript,

[00:12:36.168]
which is nice. I tend to be more of a reader.

[00:12:38.259]
So I, I love to have the transcript but

[00:12:40.489]
uh of course, I think I'm in the minority, especially

[00:12:42.808]
with younger kids. So the video is always appealing.

[00:12:45.460]
They'll all have time for some more amazing

[00:12:48.918]
animals and they're fairly short,

[00:12:51.029]
you know, good way maybe to introduce the topic

[00:12:53.178]
and, and pull a few facts.

[00:12:56.178]
And then lastly,

[00:12:58.548]
if again, you have an integration

[00:13:01.029]
uh with Nat Geo Kids,

[00:13:03.168]
you're gonna be able to browse issues

[00:13:05.250]
of the Nat Geo Kids Magazine right

[00:13:07.580]
here from the home page as well. So gonna

[00:13:09.658]
dive into an issue, it actually displays

[00:13:11.899]
just like the ebooks do. So like we've

[00:13:14.009]
got the magazine flat on the table.

[00:13:16.298]
There is a bit of an embargo with Nat Geo

[00:13:18.340]
Kids Magazine. We do have to wait

[00:13:20.389]
um a certain amount of time before

[00:13:22.529]
we can have the newest issue, but you can go

[00:13:24.570]
back through the entire back file as well.

[00:13:26.969]
We have available.

[00:13:28.609]
So

[00:13:29.750]
we do want to take advantage though of the

[00:13:31.820]
topic tree. So I'm gonna jump all the way back to

[00:13:33.859]
where we started here.

[00:13:36.168]
And again, we like curiosity. So

[00:13:38.279]
there's always an I wonder question on the home page.

[00:13:40.340]
Every time you come back, it pops up a new one,

[00:13:42.570]
but this is where we're going to do some work here

[00:13:44.739]
is through our topic tree. So this will get you into

[00:13:46.869]
all of the content and

[00:13:48.940]
topic pages that we talked about before.

[00:13:51.259]
So as you're browsing these, you can

[00:13:53.320]
see, of course, these are tied to curriculum

[00:13:55.604]
areas. Um And if you start

[00:13:57.754]
down a path, I'm go ahead and select social studies.

[00:13:59.933]
Again, we see how this starts to drill down.

[00:14:02.125]
So we take the large topic of

[00:14:04.224]
social studies and break down into world history

[00:14:06.734]
into us, presidents, us, history,

[00:14:09.205]
native American tribes,

[00:14:12.200]
and then down to our third level where we get

[00:14:14.269]
more specific. So we are finding a

[00:14:16.288]
list of native American tribes.

[00:14:18.649]
And then again, all of the things that you

[00:14:20.759]
start with on the topic tree

[00:14:23.408]
uh are going to end up

[00:14:25.639]
on a topic page or portal page.

[00:14:27.840]
You may hear me call it that as well. We

[00:14:29.918]
start out with that great overview. So right

[00:14:32.000]
away, we find out where the Iroquois um

[00:14:34.479]
live. We have the ability

[00:14:36.639]
to jump in and read more of that

[00:14:38.759]
overview and we're gonna, we're gonna go into

[00:14:40.798]
more articles and talk about our details here, but

[00:14:43.149]
just a click gets into that, of course, that

[00:14:45.279]
content

[00:14:47.190]
and then again, some quick facts so

[00:14:49.320]
we can grab some some quick info

[00:14:52.000]
and then we get into all of the

[00:14:54.109]
information we have for the Iroquois

[00:14:56.119]
and we break this down by content type.

[00:14:58.239]
So we've got book articles, we've got magazine

[00:15:00.460]
articles, we've got biographies, pictures,

[00:15:03.288]
and so on. And then at the bottom

[00:15:05.519]
of the page, you will find related topics.

[00:15:08.070]
So again, great discovery tool, we

[00:15:10.139]
can branch off into

[00:15:12.500]
another tribe, you know, maybe go down another

[00:15:14.729]
path. But always there are ways

[00:15:16.969]
to kind of get to more content. So

[00:15:19.129]
love to encourage that curiosity

[00:15:21.149]
and discovery in our our younger users.

[00:15:23.830]
So let me jump back to the home page.

[00:15:26.070]
We're gonna go down a few more paths here from the topic

[00:15:28.418]
tree. And in this case, I'm gonna go into

[00:15:30.500]
science.

[00:15:32.590]
And again, we start breaking these down

[00:15:34.788]
and then get to our, our lower level

[00:15:37.158]
list of topics I'm going to weather

[00:15:39.460]
and climate here.

[00:15:41.349]
So it has been a interesting weather

[00:15:43.440]
season. Uh, overall, I think regardless

[00:15:45.500]
of where you live, so

[00:15:48.158]
take a look at this.

[00:15:50.590]
So I'm gonna jump into weather as a whole.

[00:15:53.168]
And again, we're gonna land on that topic

[00:15:55.239]
page. Start right out with an overview,

[00:15:57.379]
get into some quick facts, but I wanted

[00:15:59.580]
to show you and here we go. Actually,

[00:16:01.849]
here's what the integration looks like.

[00:16:03.940]
If we have Gale ebooks or Nat Geo Kids,

[00:16:06.349]
the nonfiction books, um,

[00:16:08.599]
from NASA Geographic Kids. And

[00:16:10.639]
then again, any age appropriate ebooks

[00:16:12.729]
that you've purchased from Gale will actually go to this content

[00:16:15.070]
type over there on the right. You can see the book covers

[00:16:17.239]
everybody though will have our book articles.

[00:16:19.369]
This is the reference content that's coming out

[00:16:21.408]
of Gale and Context Elementary itself.

[00:16:23.830]
And one of the great things about it, actually, let's

[00:16:25.908]
go ahead and look at the entire list of results here

[00:16:28.590]
is we keep it really simple if you've

[00:16:30.629]
attended any other Gale webinars or maybe subscribed

[00:16:32.729]
to other databases.

[00:16:34.139]
You'll see Gale and Context elementary has

[00:16:36.340]
really its own look and feel. But there are a few

[00:16:38.450]
things we do in all of our databases. When you're looking

[00:16:40.690]
at search results, you can always see the date where it comes

[00:16:42.928]
from. And, and I'm gonna use

[00:16:45.000]
my little annotate tool here. Our

[00:16:47.129]
content types, our co or sorry,

[00:16:49.308]
not types our content levels.

[00:16:51.408]
So these boxes, we have five

[00:16:53.619]
of them. They are

[00:16:56.000]
gonna be found in all of the gal and context

[00:16:58.399]
resources and a few others.

[00:17:00.639]
And basically what they're telling you is

[00:17:03.308]
a range of reading level. So

[00:17:05.410]
when you're in gal in context elementary, you're gonna see

[00:17:07.529]
a lot of the green and blue boxes. Green

[00:17:10.259]
is a level one with just one dot

[00:17:12.680]
And level two there in blue,

[00:17:15.029]
it has the two dots.

[00:17:16.640]
If you look over to the right, we have

[00:17:18.719]
ways to filter our results which we'll we'll

[00:17:20.858]
talk about a little more but one of them is

[00:17:22.949]
content level. So

[00:17:24.670]
you've got the ability to filter your results

[00:17:27.299]
into level one or level two. Again,

[00:17:29.420]
those are our kind of Oh sorry, not again, I haven't

[00:17:31.568]
explained. So level one is generally gonna be lower

[00:17:33.838]
elementary reading level and uh level

[00:17:35.959]
two is gonna be upper elementary, then middle school

[00:17:38.459]
for level three,

[00:17:39.979]
level four is gonna be more high school

[00:17:42.279]
and then level five more, you know, scholarly

[00:17:44.789]
or academic.

[00:17:46.439]
So it's got a, a lexile

[00:17:48.709]
range there assigned as well. We're gonna talk about

[00:17:51.229]
um which you can get even more

[00:17:53.269]
specific with when you're looking for reading level

[00:17:55.449]
too from advanced search. But let's let me,

[00:17:57.598]
let me show you another feature around what

[00:17:59.630]
we've done with reading level. So Gale

[00:18:01.809]
is a publisher,

[00:18:03.828]
we have a lot of our own content

[00:18:06.289]
in these databases. And the great thing about

[00:18:08.380]
that is we can do what we like with our own

[00:18:10.459]
content.

[00:18:11.358]
So what we've chosen to do

[00:18:13.828]
is level

[00:18:16.338]
a lot of our reference and biography

[00:18:18.608]
content.

[00:18:19.568]
So you won't see this for every single article

[00:18:22.170]
that that is in the database from Gale,

[00:18:24.348]
but you'll see it for a lot of them. Again in

[00:18:26.410]
reference and biography, we can't

[00:18:28.660]
take an article from say The New York Times

[00:18:30.949]
for Kids and rewrite it. You know, that's,

[00:18:33.170]
that's gonna break some permissions them. So

[00:18:35.463]
we can only do that with content we've written. So

[00:18:37.614]
that's what we've done. We've leveled it, taken

[00:18:39.634]
the same article and written it at two different reading

[00:18:41.875]
levels. So you can always get

[00:18:43.993]
from one to the other. They'll both show

[00:18:46.203]
up in your results list. And again, you wanna look for that

[00:18:48.275]
content level indicator

[00:18:50.045]
to show you which, which you've got.

[00:18:52.959]
So let me clear these drawings so we can

[00:18:55.338]
uh I

[00:18:57.390]
get back to

[00:18:58.818]
looking at this content. So I landed

[00:19:00.858]
here in level two and over here to the far

[00:19:03.209]
right. We've got a row of buttons and we're gonna get

[00:19:05.299]
back to most of them. But the one to the

[00:19:07.338]
very far right article info

[00:19:09.348]
is gonna open up and show you

[00:19:11.358]
the lexile measure. So for this article,

[00:19:13.598]
I'm working with an 840

[00:19:15.920]
I can open that up and I can switch from here

[00:19:18.219]
to that level one that is at a 470

[00:19:20.949]
you'll see my tab changed up above

[00:19:23.750]
and jump to that lower reading level so I can

[00:19:25.858]
make the call, right. What's gonna be most appropriate

[00:19:28.358]
for the the student that I'm working with

[00:19:30.410]
or my classroom or

[00:19:32.459]
you know, the group of kids I have in the library. So

[00:19:34.969]
our level one article here starts out with words to

[00:19:37.108]
know. So we've got a glossary built in. So

[00:19:39.150]
we know what atmosphere is, we know what temperature

[00:19:41.469]
is and you can see we've got short

[00:19:43.529]
sentences, short paragraphs

[00:19:46.088]
and we do a lot of work kind of behind the scenes

[00:19:48.309]
too about how the article looks

[00:19:50.368]
what, you know, the, the size of

[00:19:52.449]
the text. But you can always

[00:19:54.529]
play around with this too.

[00:19:56.680]
I scroll back up to the top of the article.

[00:19:58.868]
Remember those four but or not

[00:20:00.930]
four, those uh six buttons over

[00:20:03.039]
here to the far, right?

[00:20:04.420]
One of them is a text size tool.

[00:20:06.818]
So if I scroll down a bit, so you can see this again,

[00:20:08.868]
you can see the text has gotten bigger you can

[00:20:10.979]
also take advantage of like I did at the

[00:20:13.029]
start of the session, the zoom options

[00:20:15.059]
in your browser and make the whole thing bigger.

[00:20:17.578]
Uh But if you just want to work with the text, we've got

[00:20:19.608]
the button there for you to do it,

[00:20:22.108]
you can also change the way the text

[00:20:24.219]
displays.

[00:20:26.049]
So I've got a nephew who has

[00:20:28.598]
a processing issue where he really needs

[00:20:30.719]
text to be on a blue or a green background

[00:20:33.209]
to see it clearly. So I can switch

[00:20:35.449]
to the green background for him. I

[00:20:37.630]
can make different font choices. If I prefer

[00:20:39.900]
something with some SARS on it, we've got Gammon

[00:20:42.279]
there, I could work with, we offer the open dyslexic

[00:20:44.838]
font as well, which was a big request

[00:20:47.279]
um from our users. You

[00:20:49.318]
can also change the spacing

[00:20:51.559]
of the text. So I'm just gonna put these all to most.

[00:20:53.868]
You can kind of see the um

[00:20:56.380]
work that it does. So let me scroll down back to

[00:20:58.449]
the text here. So you can see the whole font has changed

[00:21:00.969]
again. Our spacing has changed

[00:21:03.209]
and the great thing is it

[00:21:05.269]
will remember those settings. So if

[00:21:07.289]
I switch over to level

[00:21:09.449]
two article,

[00:21:11.529]
it's gonna apply those settings, right?

[00:21:13.789]
So looking at our level two, which

[00:21:15.799]
I think was an 870 lexile, you can see

[00:21:17.949]
here, longer sentences,

[00:21:19.959]
longer paragraphs, you know, we've got more

[00:21:21.989]
texts to work with here, right?

[00:21:24.180]
So it's

[00:21:25.729]
jumping up that reading level

[00:21:27.759]
uh in a few different ways.

[00:21:30.539]
So very handy. Again, you're gonna see

[00:21:32.559]
this quite a bit for reference

[00:21:34.890]
and biography uh and your results.

[00:21:37.328]
So let me jump back out to the rest of our results

[00:21:39.699]
and we'll take a look at a few others.

[00:21:43.229]
So we looked at book content already. You've also

[00:21:45.259]
got periodical content, we've got magazines

[00:21:47.489]
and news sources aimed at

[00:21:49.519]
our younger users. There might be a few in there

[00:21:51.578]
for our professionals for say our librarians

[00:21:53.959]
in the elementary library for our teachers.

[00:21:56.439]
But most of the content is really aimed

[00:21:58.549]
at that younger user with that younger reading level.

[00:22:00.759]
But jump into news, we've got a few

[00:22:02.858]
news sources aimed at kids like news or sorry

[00:22:05.199]
like kids post.

[00:22:06.598]
But if I wanna seek something out, you'll see

[00:22:08.650]
again those filter options over on the right. One of those

[00:22:10.858]
is to be able to isolate to publication title

[00:22:13.449]
and we were able to add the New York Times

[00:22:15.479]
for kids in the last year or so.

[00:22:17.539]
So I'm just gonna go ahead and isolate to that

[00:22:20.328]
narrow down to two entries here. And as I jump

[00:22:22.640]
in again, we're gonna see,

[00:22:25.229]
I've got those

[00:22:26.660]
uh display options that I set before

[00:22:29.039]
it's just remembering them.

[00:22:30.699]
Now, I am gonna go ahead and set those back

[00:22:32.969]
to the default because I want to take

[00:22:35.078]
advantage of a couple of these other tools and it just, I think

[00:22:37.180]
appears a little better

[00:22:38.709]
when I'm demoing it from here.

[00:22:40.880]
So another way we can make

[00:22:42.949]
something more readable for students, maybe raise

[00:22:45.348]
their, um, comprehension of it is

[00:22:47.670]
to have them listen. So one,

[00:22:49.699]
they might just be maybe better listeners than they

[00:22:51.828]
are readers.

[00:22:53.170]
The listen is also handy if you've got students

[00:22:55.400]
where maybe English isn't their first language

[00:22:58.049]
and they hear it a little better than they do

[00:23:00.525]
yet. The listen tool is gonna

[00:23:02.535]
let us read the entire article.

[00:23:04.875]
Now it acts like summer weather is going

[00:23:06.963]
to the extreme. It acts a little differently

[00:23:09.295]
than a screen reader does. Um It

[00:23:11.473]
isn't going to read, you know, from

[00:23:13.634]
the banner and all of that, it just starts with

[00:23:15.644]
the article title and goes from there. You

[00:23:17.723]
can also see it's highlighting as it's reading

[00:23:20.324]
and then there are settings, you can go into that little

[00:23:22.555]
gear icon will let you make other

[00:23:24.674]
adjustments. You can make this the most comfortable or

[00:23:26.805]
needed reading experience.

[00:23:29.489]
You can also translate

[00:23:32.180]
our text. So this is an on demand translation.

[00:23:34.890]
So it's, you know, not how I want to learn to speak

[00:23:37.189]
a different language, but it can be a huge help

[00:23:39.549]
when you've got kids where maybe again, English

[00:23:41.789]
isn't their first language. And you want to

[00:23:43.818]
give him a helping hand,

[00:23:45.509]
we can translate it, gives you a little preview of the

[00:23:47.519]
translation, then you can choose to complete it

[00:23:49.618]
and there we go

[00:23:51.848]
and you'll see that listen button sticks around

[00:23:53.930]
for, I think, better than half, I think about three quarters

[00:23:56.150]
of the languages in our list.

[00:23:58.348]
So, um, we can also hear this

[00:24:00.660]
in Spanish.

[00:24:02.799]
Hi. So you're gonna see those options for all of

[00:24:04.868]
the articles, uh, that are available

[00:24:06.959]
in their text. Face. The books that come from

[00:24:09.068]
Nat Geo Kids and the, uh, books that

[00:24:11.118]
come from Gale ebooks won't have a translation

[00:24:13.588]
option, but you will have the listen option.

[00:24:16.000]
So they're there. You're working with kind of a PDF

[00:24:18.130]
there. So, all

[00:24:20.180]
right, let's go ahead. We're gonna try search. I love

[00:24:22.269]
the, the brows

[00:24:23.598]
chic tree, but of course, we often can see

[00:24:25.689]
a search box and we use it. We know what we're after.

[00:24:28.309]
So just gonna do a quick search here for Ruby Bridges,

[00:24:30.689]
we have a search assist. I'm a terrible speller.

[00:24:32.969]
So that's a big help. Um But

[00:24:35.209]
it also can just help you find maybe more specific

[00:24:37.410]
search term.

[00:24:38.858]
So again, we start right out a bit of an overview

[00:24:41.250]
and so on

[00:24:42.539]
and we've got again,

[00:24:44.719]
a lot of great content here again

[00:24:46.779]
at varying reading levels. So again,

[00:24:49.250]
we can always go in and take a look at that content

[00:24:51.640]
isolate by content level.

[00:24:53.739]
But let's say I wanna start with that, you

[00:24:55.868]
can always apply these filters after

[00:24:58.078]
you've performed a search. But if you start

[00:25:00.358]
with advanced search, you can actually put those filters

[00:25:02.670]
in place to start. So if there's a particular

[00:25:04.729]
source, you know, you want your results from,

[00:25:06.989]
we can come to advanced search and

[00:25:09.219]
limit.

[00:25:10.739]
Pardon me, we can limit our search

[00:25:12.750]
by publication title. If I choose from the

[00:25:14.779]
dropbox here or um some

[00:25:16.858]
of these also, you'll see duplicated down below.

[00:25:19.400]
Uh But a couple of my favorites here

[00:25:21.479]
are those content and uh lexile

[00:25:23.650]
limiters. So content level is gonna use

[00:25:25.838]
those gale defined levels one through five

[00:25:29.400]
lexile measure though, gives a bit of

[00:25:31.469]
a range for you to pick from. And you

[00:25:33.509]
can see you can, you can multi select,

[00:25:36.078]
OK, you could also put in your own

[00:25:38.088]
lexile measure or score. So you

[00:25:40.229]
can really target reading levels. The

[00:25:42.529]
other thing we offer here that

[00:25:44.868]
is very popular to use is

[00:25:46.939]
there's actually a filter for and I'm gonna

[00:25:49.108]
circle it just so we

[00:25:51.259]
let me see it.

[00:25:53.039]
Sorry folks bear with me while I,

[00:25:55.140]
I'm debating if I want to use the annotate

[00:25:57.348]
tool anymore. It always takes me so long to get started with it.

[00:25:59.799]
Here we go. The level documents

[00:26:02.568]
limiter. So this will make sure

[00:26:04.608]
I'm gonna have my articles at two

[00:26:06.969]
different reading levels. So if I've got a

[00:26:08.979]
mixed classroom, maybe I've got some advanced readers,

[00:26:11.299]
I've got some readers who maybe need a little help.

[00:26:14.180]
I can isolate and get

[00:26:16.680]
only level documents. Now,

[00:26:18.890]
this is fairly limiting because again,

[00:26:23.640]
we can only filter the content

[00:26:25.709]
that we publish at Yale. So this is really gonna

[00:26:27.739]
limit me to, uh, articles

[00:26:30.150]
from. Oh, sorry, I, I apologize.

[00:26:32.420]
I had the, um,

[00:26:34.219]
I think I had my lexile scores selected

[00:26:36.229]
there too.

[00:26:37.529]
Let me stop. Let me jump back to advance search and,

[00:26:39.910]
and, uh, start fresh.

[00:26:42.189]
Sorry about that folks. I thought I cleared them.

[00:26:50.449]
Right. Yeah,

[00:26:51.848]
that is. There we go.

[00:26:53.630]
So again, this will be biographies,

[00:26:55.848]
maybe some reference articles and

[00:26:58.049]
there we have our leveled content.

[00:27:00.180]
So again, we always see both in the search results,

[00:27:02.279]
but you can easily switch back and forth between the two.

[00:27:05.400]
And if I wanna target this for my

[00:27:07.449]
students, if this is a biography, I want them to

[00:27:09.578]
read, you know, maybe a homework assignment or we're gonna

[00:27:11.660]
read it together in the library

[00:27:14.578]
and I wanna make sure my kids are getting this

[00:27:16.650]
level one biography of Bridges.

[00:27:19.789]
There are a few different ways I can put it right in their hands.

[00:27:22.170]
One is and probably the simplest

[00:27:24.390]
because it works with everything

[00:27:26.098]
in the upper right hand corner here

[00:27:28.318]
in our, our toolbar,

[00:27:30.630]
we have our get link and

[00:27:32.910]
this is a persistent URL

[00:27:35.009]
or pearl

[00:27:36.789]
that was sorry, let me get rid of that circle.

[00:27:39.750]
That will give me

[00:27:41.680]
a way to link this, say if we use

[00:27:43.699]
something like seesaw or even just,

[00:27:45.890]
you know, if I've got my own web page or

[00:27:48.098]
I wanna link it in um you

[00:27:50.108]
know, another L MS like clever or

[00:27:52.130]
something like that.

[00:27:53.650]
Oh, sorry, not clever. Um

[00:27:56.328]
Am I thinking of?

[00:27:58.489]
Well, I'll uh canvas.

[00:28:00.890]
That's what I was thinking of.

[00:28:02.199]
That URL will go anywhere.

[00:28:04.250]
It is just a URL, but it always

[00:28:06.608]
comes back to the same place. So I would always

[00:28:08.848]
be sending whoever clicks it right

[00:28:11.088]
back to this level one biography. So

[00:28:13.189]
it's even something you might share

[00:28:15.318]
with a colleague to let them know it's there

[00:28:17.890]
um really handy. So get link really

[00:28:20.049]
simple gives you URL, you can use it wherever

[00:28:22.328]
to guide your users, right? Where you want them,

[00:28:25.239]
those of you that are Google classroom

[00:28:27.529]
users, you might have recognized

[00:28:29.868]
our Google classroom

[00:28:31.549]
icon up here at the very top of the page.

[00:28:33.588]
Similar idea I'm gonna be

[00:28:35.640]
able to put my students right where I want

[00:28:37.880]
them. But it just starts me down the path to

[00:28:39.890]
adding to my Google classroom page.

[00:28:42.118]
So you choose your subject

[00:28:44.459]
and uh you know, basically

[00:28:46.920]
it's the same path you use when you are

[00:28:49.049]
adding something to your Google classroom anyway,

[00:28:51.608]
and forgive my very brief instructions here.

[00:28:53.949]
What it's gonna do is embed a link

[00:28:56.818]
actually that gap link to this

[00:28:59.368]
article. So when I sign it to my students

[00:29:02.318]
and it gives me a chance to view it just to check

[00:29:04.459]
things out.

[00:29:06.279]
I can't, oh It takes a minute for it to

[00:29:08.309]
show up there. Oh, did I not?

[00:29:11.019]
Yeah, make an assignment

[00:29:13.279]
um

[00:29:14.459]
instructions that's important. See, there's that

[00:29:16.519]
link embedded for my students. So

[00:29:19.049]
you land right there.

[00:29:22.439]
So really handy.

[00:29:24.640]
The other integration I wanna mention and

[00:29:26.650]
we're gonna wrap up here in a minute to let you go

[00:29:29.328]
is you can pull content out to

[00:29:31.358]
your Gale or sorry Google Drive

[00:29:33.420]
or Microsoft Onedrive.

[00:29:35.689]
There's a little send to button here at

[00:29:37.719]
the top, send it to Google Drive or onedrive is a great

[00:29:39.949]
way for kids to keep track of their research. Before

[00:29:42.729]
they do that, you can take advantage of our highlights

[00:29:45.160]
and notes tool, they can mark up this article.

[00:29:47.380]
So again, another kind of skill they're

[00:29:49.420]
learning as they're learning about doing

[00:29:51.549]
research and

[00:29:56.549]
I can give myself a little note. And

[00:29:58.949]
when I send it to Google Drive or when

[00:30:01.068]
I print it, those highlights

[00:30:03.269]
and notes are gonna go with it,

[00:30:04.939]
they only last for your session. So you do

[00:30:07.078]
wanna print, you wanna send it to Google or Microsoft,

[00:30:09.729]
you want to

[00:30:11.400]
uh maybe download it. So you

[00:30:13.500]
keep those highlights and notes to protect

[00:30:15.699]
user privacy, we clear them out when you leave the database,

[00:30:18.299]
which is, you know, user privacy is always important,

[00:30:20.559]
especially when you're working with kids under 18. So

[00:30:23.380]
can take advantage of our highlights

[00:30:25.799]
and notes tool to help again, build up their

[00:30:27.949]
uh their research skills. So

[00:30:30.459]
lots of good stuff here. I'm just double

[00:30:32.618]
checking my notes. We hit everything I wanted

[00:30:34.900]
to share with you. So let me pop back to our

[00:30:37.019]
slides and we'll wrap up and get

[00:30:39.259]
you on your way.

[00:30:40.559]
So this information will be in

[00:30:42.568]
my follow up email. So if anybody has to scoot,

[00:30:44.779]
I apologize. I see we're a minute over. Um

[00:30:47.269]
uh, this will come in a follow up email that'll

[00:30:49.549]
uh arrive around this time tomorrow. But you can always

[00:30:51.750]
reach out to me again, Stacy Nibble,

[00:30:53.789]
I'm your gail trainer today.

[00:30:55.588]
Uh Feel free to also go reach out to our

[00:30:57.618]
customer success managing team.

[00:30:59.699]
They are folks who help

[00:31:01.828]
you be successful with the resources. So if you've got

[00:31:03.979]
a project going on in the library or maybe

[00:31:06.219]
you wanna raise usage, you're getting ready

[00:31:08.348]
to show this off to you teachers. Um

[00:31:10.750]
We have a great team who can help you,

[00:31:13.078]
you know, uh solve a lot of problems, but

[00:31:15.160]
also, you know, create some success

[00:31:17.348]
and then technical support is available. If you

[00:31:19.368]
have questions, you have a trouble getting into the databases,

[00:31:21.670]
questions about authentication, uh database

[00:31:24.608]
usage, senior stats, things like that.

[00:31:26.680]
Tech support is always there. You could of

[00:31:28.759]
course, always reach out to your gale account rep

[00:31:30.779]
if you're interested in looking at more content from Gale.

[00:31:33.318]
And then we've got lots of great materials

[00:31:35.338]
out on our support site, tutorials about

[00:31:37.568]
using the databases. We've got lots

[00:31:39.880]
of activities you can use in the library or the

[00:31:41.900]
classroom. We have escape rooms, we've

[00:31:44.088]
got scavenger hunts

[00:31:45.729]
and there's a ton of free marketing material as well.

[00:31:47.880]
So if you're trying to draw people into these resources,

[00:31:50.348]
we've got lots of bookmarks and uh digital

[00:31:53.029]
signage and, and things you can

[00:31:55.289]
post your social media all ready to

[00:31:57.368]
go uh on the support site.

[00:31:59.670]
So that's everything I wanted to

[00:32:01.699]
share. I'm gonna stick around and see if there are

[00:32:03.858]
any questions. But thanks so much folks for

[00:32:05.979]
tuning in. I apologize. They did run a couple of minutes over.

[00:32:08.588]
Um I can never, you know, hold back

[00:32:10.779]
from showing you all these things in our databases.

[00:32:12.880]
So I appreciate uh if you're able

[00:32:14.979]
to stay. But again, questions should come

[00:32:17.098]
to you later. Again, feel free to reach out to me

[00:32:19.420]
or someone else on your gale team.

[00:32:21.500]
Happy to hear from you. So thanks

[00:32:23.568]
everybody for tuning in.
