Language Choices for Product UI and Article Translation
Most Gale products offer students the option to choose the language they'll see the product user interface (UI) in. This can be set by the student on a session-by-session basis, and it can be set by the library admin as a default. Gale also has a feature that allows Students to choose what language to read an article in. The end of this document lists the available languages.
Product UI Language
Student chooses: The tool bar of each product contains a link that lets a student change the language of the UI for the duration of their session. When the student selects the UI language option they'll see a list of available languages (Gale currently supports 36). They simply select the one they wish to use.
Library sets a default: Library admins can use an option in Gale Admin to set the default starting language for their products to any of the 36 languages. See 'Gale Admin > General Preferences' for this option. A student can still change the language to one of their choice during their individual session.
Library creates direct links: A library can also create direct links that specify default language on a product-by-product basis. The library can then use these links, such as on their library resource pages, to open sessions in a Gale product in the language of their choice. The basic syntax for this link is:
https://go.gale.com/ps/?u=abcd&p=EFGH&lang=xx
The variables you need to specify in this link are (all case sensitive):
- Location ID: The
u=abcd
in the above example. This is the code for your library location. To find this code you can look in your GaleAdmin account, on the 'Location Summary' page, the 'Location ID' field (also referred to as a user group, or loc id). When you are in a product, you can look at the URL and you will typically see the location ID there, identified asu=NAME
, oruserGroupName=NAME
. - Product code: The
p=EFGH
in the above example. All products have a product code. The list of products at the end of this document contains the product codes (such as AONE for Academic OneFile). Some of our products do not support UI translation. Their product codes will not be listed in the table below. - Language code: The
lang=xx
in the above example. The list of supported languages at the end of this document contains the language codes (such ases
for Spanish).
An example URL for a library that has a location ID of ourlibrary, for the product General OneFile (ITOF), and wants to start sessions with a UI language of German (de
): https://go.gale.com/ps/?u=ourlibrary&p=ITOF&lang=de
Article Translation
Our content translation tool, where the user can translate English content to a number of different languages (and back to English), is available to all customers. While most content in Gale products is in English, some of our products offer articles from publications in 11 other languages. Our article translation tool allows the student to translate these documents into English as well as many of the other 36 languages.
