[00:00:03.000]
Thank you for joining me today for your training for the Florida Electronic Library. My name is Tammi Burke.
[00:00:09.000]
I'm a senior trainer at Gale. And today we will be covering Gale presents Peterson's career prep, Your Path to Success.
[00:00:18.000]
Petersen has recently undergone enhancements. They have not launched and are not live just yet, but will be in a couple weeks.
[00:00:27.000]
So this is a bit of in a sneak peek, sneak peek to those enhancements, but they will be as I as I mentioned what I'm sharing with you today will look just like the site that you will be have access to with all the new enhancements and the the new platform.
[00:00:42.000]
With all of those great new tools, easily accessible. And I will talk to you a little bit more about that today and then I will be able to share that with you.
[00:00:52.000]
Live for today's training.
[00:00:58.000]
Our agenda for today, we will start with access to the FEL resources and then I will give you an overview of Gale presents Peterson's career prep.
[00:01:10.000]
I'll talk about the newly enhanced. Features of Peterson's career prep. And then any questions that you have.
[00:01:18.000]
Feel free to ask throughout today's session. I'll leave you with contact information at the end of our training session today and also where you can go for additional training.
[00:01:29.000]
To access your FVL resources, you can go to the Florida Electronic Library. Website and access all of your resources there once you access the link it will look like this and you can find your career prep resources.
[00:01:44.000]
This one, the screen should I take and it used to be here on the homepage, but they live either in the A to Z but you can go into the subject section and and find those that resource looking under the business category or the job searching category and you'll find those that information there so that resource but very easy to find it on your A to Z list also.
[00:02:09.000]
Now, Gale presents Peterson's career prep. This is how it currently looks. And what you are going to find is still available within career prep is you do have the ability to find a college, look for scholarships, look for financial aid help, that's still available in the new in enhanced career prep.
[00:02:29.000]
You can also find a career based on assessments so the career assessment is still there, overviews and open positions.
[00:02:38.000]
And then you can still build your resume your cover letter and get career advice. So currently this is what the platform looks like.
[00:02:48.000]
Moving forward, starting again in November, Gale presents Peterson's career prep will have updates.
[00:02:50.000]
And why are we changing or why are changes being made? The current Petersen's experience is good, but it could be better.
[00:02:59.000]
We wanted to show, showcase more of the Petersen's features. And And then we interviewed quite a few users and to show that that content and what we were told is that the content was 2 buried buried within the product.
[00:03:20.000]
So what happened or what's changing is there's a new user interface. Spanish language navigation is available.
[00:03:28.000]
Goal setting is also available and there's more video content.
[00:03:35.000]
Again, here's the current homepage where you have 4 boxes on the homepage to send users to different parts of the site.
[00:03:42.000]
They need to click through multiple. Menus to find content and vague headers with lots of texts make for make quick navigation a little bit challenging.
[00:03:52.000]
So what we've done is, or Petersen says done, this new navigation. It's very simple and clean.
[00:03:59.000]
The boxes are gone in favor of these clear calls to action here on the homepage. Clear options allow for quicker access to the highly used parts of the site.
[00:04:10.000]
We have icons that are used throughout the site to increase clarity. Those icons on the homepage are echoed throughout the site.
[00:04:17.000]
And then the site is now higher contrast. For easier reading, so for to help support accessibility.
[00:04:26.000]
We also have goal setting, so also a part of the career prep update is goal setting. And this really helps our learners or our users find resources that will move them towards their goals.
[00:04:39.000]
And this is for both career oriented users or maybe you have some users that are still in school. Users backed concept where both Gale and Petersen heard feedback that approaching a platform with a goal in mind was really helpful.
[00:04:50.000]
So we do have that goal setting option available within Peterson's career prep. And this is what it looks like.
[00:05:02.000]
We're, well, and I'm sorry, this is also your goals, but also you can save your resources.
[00:05:09.000]
So previously you could star a if there was if you were looking at career advice and there was a section you were interested in or you could star that and that would live on your homepage.
[00:05:21.000]
Well, now what you can do is you can move it into your My Resources section. So when users come back and reuse this resource, they can go exactly back to where they were.
[00:05:30.000]
They can click into my resources and everything will be living there that they've added into that resource folder.
[00:05:35.000]
That's the beauty of creating an account. On this resource, it saves that information for you, including your your resume, but you can save those resources and that my resources folder and find that content quite easily.
[00:05:52.000]
I mentioned that we have Spanish navigation so users now have the ability to navigate the site in Spanish.
[00:05:59.000]
So all the navigational tools will be in Spanish. There additional parts of the site such as the resume creator, find a career pages are translatable through Google Translate in the browser.
[00:06:12.000]
But we have added the translate feature for the navigational tools and to access it it's in the actual upper left-hand corner here and you can easily select Spanish and it will change everything.
[00:06:21.000]
On the page.
[00:06:32.000]
So with that, let's, I'm gonna jump into the resource itself. We'll come back to the Gale support site at the end.
[00:06:35.000]
So let me share with you. I haven't logged in because I wanted to show you the login options.
[00:06:46.000]
So you can see here. On the homepage, this is what it now looks like where we have, I mentioned, being able to change the navigation to Spanish.
[00:06:55.000]
I'm going to click Spanish. You can see I changed it to Spanish or I can go back to English.
[00:07:00.000]
Just in that upper left hand corner. Tech support is here. And in the upper right I have the ability to log in or sign up, but I also have that call to action button here right on the homepage where I can log in or sign up.
[00:07:14.000]
So I'm going to do that first. And then let me do that. And my information is saved, but it asked me if there's a same general information where it's asking for an email address and a password.
[00:07:26.000]
And on the left hand side, you can, this is where you can sign up. So you'll see that sign up now, but it cookied my information because I'm on my computer.
[00:07:34.000]
So I'm going to log in real quick. Oh, and it is not taking my login.
[00:07:39.000]
I just logged into this product menu. This is bear with me because this is the developed Okay, it logged me in there.
[00:07:47.000]
There we go. I'm in the development site still, so I was hoping it went well. You'll see some odd things that I'll share with you during the session today.
[00:07:55.000]
That will be slightly. Updated information. It'll look the same, but the information or content that it's showing will be more current.
[00:08:06.000]
But anyhow, so I am logged in and now I have the ability to put it. In my resources, I can browse the menu here in upper right, of course I have a search bar too.
[00:08:18.000]
I can browse the menu on the homepage. Is this call the action button in the center of my my page but I can also scroll down I have these 2 icons where I can quickly go in to find a school or scholarship or I can explore my career options.
[00:08:34.000]
As I continue to scroll, I have the ability to go into those career tools. So what I'm seeing here when I click into Career Explore Career Options, I also have the ability to access that information here.
[00:08:47.000]
These are all hyperlinked out. So if I wanted to quickly go directly to my online resume builder.
[00:08:51.000]
I could do that. Right from the home page. Same with finding a school or scholarship. I these are also hyperlinked out and I can quickly jump to any of these subject areas.
[00:09:01.000]
And start working. So it's not hidden below with those, if you remember in the current format where you would have to click and then click again and make another selection.
[00:09:13.000]
Now we've pulled out that information right on the homepage. So it's also really easy to access specific content right away.
[00:09:22.000]
And then we have that option to browse the menu.
[00:09:26.000]
And this is just another path that I can take where I can go through each of the categories where if I want to find a school or explore a career, I have those options available.
[00:09:40.000]
Or I can enter in using this path here. On the homepage. So if I want to find a school or scholarship.
[00:09:49.000]
This will take me to all the subject areas or sub subjects below that school scholarship all the sections I need you can see here it starts with the school search tool and I have not only the courses, it's not really a course, it's really the tool itself, but I also have the about information.
[00:10:08.000]
That will populate for me. There we go. What is this course about or what is this section about?
[00:10:09.000]
So that's really helpful. But if I don't need it, I can just jump right into that school search tool.
[00:10:20.000]
It's pretty self-explanatory there. Below you can see when you have added an item to your resources.
[00:10:29.000]
It'll say that here on the right hand side. So you either have a button to add it to your resources or I've already added it to my resources.
[00:10:31.000]
So I can quickly jump to. My resources and access that information.
[00:10:43.000]
If I go into school search? Oh, and before I do, if I wanted to add all 3 of these items.
[00:10:51.000]
To my resources to my My resources folder, I can do that too. But let's go into school search.
[00:10:57.000]
There is one thing that will change this these 2 buttons are going away. You won't see those anymore.
[00:11:03.000]
That'll be a change in before launch, which is is a good idea. So, but you can do a school search looking for undergrad if I wanted to pick a certain area of study, maybe I'm interested in biology.
[00:11:20.000]
And I think I have a general biology category here.
[00:11:26.000]
And I want everything in Florida.
[00:11:35.000]
I think it's still gonna make me it is it's gonna make me select one of these you won't have those 2 buttons as I mentioned, but here are my results.
[00:11:45.000]
And I can save these to my schools. So if there's one I'm interested in. Oh, and I did it did not it took my filters away didn't it?
[00:11:50.000]
Okay. Let's go back to location.
[00:11:58.000]
Florida.
[00:12:02.000]
And I didn't, I don't know if it's cookied my. It may have.
[00:12:06.000]
But let's say I am interested in the college business of technology.
[00:12:14.000]
I added it to my schools. And it takes a second, you can see it was barely see that it was spinning there, but it is now added to my school.
[00:12:22.000]
So under my resources, not only do I have any goals I've, I've set and we'll, oh, I'll cover that in a moment too with the like I had set the scholarship search, but here is my school section.
[00:12:37.000]
So there's that school, my scholarships. If there's a scholarship I'm interested in and then my job so I can save all it can have this nice organized information here.
[00:12:49.000]
We where I have saved some items and also if I have decided to set a goal. So let me go back to that homepage because I want to cover one more thing that I didn't scroll all the way down for.
[00:13:02.000]
And that is this. I'm still learning to. If you're interested in setting a goal. And I had mentioned that during the PowerPoint.
[00:13:10.000]
So just below this final section, the set a goal section is here. Where again I can go into maybe I want to go into my career options and I want to set a goal of building an online resume.
[00:13:24.000]
I can do that.
[00:13:28.000]
And our resume builder still works the same as it has before. It just looks a little different as to where you're finding it.
[00:13:35.000]
You can see everything for careers is here. One more item that you will see is the career assessment will also be added here.
[00:13:44.000]
So there'll be an additional box for that career assessment. Which will still be the same process. And that is using taken an assessment so when you click into that career assessments it'll take you first to the My Journey page.
[00:14:02.000]
From there, you can go into assessments. You can start an assessment. Now you do need to take before you start career searching or exploration, you do need to take at least 2.
[00:14:15.000]
There's 4 assessments, but you need to take at least 2 of those. And it gives you some advice about not thinking about it, just answer, and then you can go through and answer, and then you can go through and answer those questions.
[00:14:27.000]
Once you do, then you can go through and answer those questions. Once you do, then you will be connected.
[00:14:28.000]
The assessment will. Once you do, then you will be connected. The assessment will align to careers that are available.
[00:14:33.000]
The assessment will align to careers that are available and you can see if I let me exit that assessment.
[00:14:37.000]
I have to even when I click on careers I have to take that assessment first. And then those careers, I can connect to jobs and I also have some tools available.
[00:14:42.000]
So step one is take at least 2 of those assessments and then those assessments will lead or guide the resource to identify careers and jobs.
[00:14:52.000]
I'm related to interests of our users. And then the tool section, you have some feedback or information on resume cover letters.
[00:15:02.000]
This should look familiar if you've been in this resource before. It should look very familiar. It is the same tool.
[00:15:14.000]
It's just looks a little bit different because it here on the platform itself. Okay. So career advice, now I'm going to go into, we looked at schools and we did a search.
[00:15:30.000]
Scholarship functions the same way where you're using the same search that looks schools and scholarship.
[00:15:35.000]
I'm looking very, very similar where you're using the same tools, the navigations on the left hand side where you can filter down and find what you're looking for.
[00:15:39.000]
Or there's always the basic search at the top. Career Advice.
[00:15:51.000]
Is going to open for me and it's going to take me to a career library. Now right now the content is not my library but it will be at it before our launch but I have that ability to go into the career library so it'll look like this.
[00:16:07.000]
Which is going to be really helpful to our users for more visual when they're looking for that career advice.
[00:16:14.000]
It was career advice in the previous version was great content, but how it's organized here is very user friendly.
[00:16:22.000]
So you will have your users will be able to use these icons. And jump into the category that they're interested in.
[00:16:29.000]
Let me know if there are any questions that you have. At all over anything I've gone over.
[00:16:36.000]
I'm going back into the platform itself. Job search engine I want to talk to you about because right now let me show you what it looks like.
[00:16:44.000]
So we have civil service jobs and private sector jobs and civil service jobs.
[00:16:51.000]
Are going to be coming from and I'm just going to select one of them. From U.S.A. jobs.
[00:17:00.000]
Where private sector jobs is going to lead you to indeed. So you have 2 sections as they stand right now.
[00:17:09.000]
We did give a little bit of feedback on that. In a meeting recently, but you have those 2 options.
[00:17:15.000]
Civil service or private sector and again private sector.
[00:17:20.000]
I can look at it takes me right to indeed. Now one thing a tip and trick I want to let you know if folks are interested in saving any of these jobs with indeed they need to sign in and save it on indeed.
[00:17:34.000]
So that's a little different. But that's the way indeed has it set up. So that's the process we have to follow.
[00:17:36.000]
But they will create an account on indeed sign in and save it. There where US U.S.A. jobs works a little differently where they have that ability to save the job here in the product.
[00:17:52.000]
So how it was explained to me yesterday. So, and again, we went over career advice. Online resume builder.
[00:18:00.000]
I just touched into this, but let me. Go back in. I think I have that one open.
[00:18:05.000]
I do. So online resume builder, if you're not familiar with this, this is a really great tool.
[00:18:11.000]
A lot of times what we hear from libraries is we have users coming in that just want a simple resume and using these templates really highlights.
[00:18:23.000]
What they've done. You've have maybe they're new to the workforce. You have students that are looking for resumes.
[00:18:30.000]
They maybe they need them to apply to colleges. The resume tool can be very helpful for them.
[00:18:35.000]
You have those that are looking to make a career change. The resume tool can help those also or those that are at an entry level position and maybe they're looking for something more professional or changing careers.
[00:18:46.000]
So there's a lot of helpful tools here. Now we do have the ability to we've got them boxed out, create a resume.
[00:18:53.000]
A cover letter and then also a website. The career journal is a nice way to keep track of any awards you've received.
[00:19:02.000]
If you have someone actively in here, it helps also organize those thoughts of, okay, I received this award or this accomplished and I want to, I want to keep track of that and all in one space.
[00:19:12.000]
This is a way they can do that and use that career journal. We do have some resources here at the bottom of the page.
[00:19:20.000]
But we also have a great knowledge center that has more information. So a lot around jobs and that's this resource is used a lot for that reason I know in our libraries, especially in there in Florida, I've received that feedback.
[00:19:37.000]
So if I wanted to create a new resume, I just create new and I have some options where I can use an existing resume if I want to upload it for my computer.
[00:19:47.000]
I can do that. I'm also LinkedIn. I can pull in content from LinkedIn.
[00:19:50.000]
So that's going to be that first section. I can use example content or I can start from scratch and it'll be a blank canvas.
[00:19:59.000]
I am going to use example content.
[00:20:06.000]
And oh, it's giving me, there we go, it took a little bit to load. And you can see below each resume you have the position that that resume was for.
[00:20:16.000]
So let's say I'm interested in becoming a dental assistant. I have Preview or select are both options.
[00:20:24.000]
So I am going to select that one. I'm not even going to preview it.
[00:20:29.000]
Here, the template has already been chosen for me, but it's a layout. It gives me some what I really like it for too is sometimes when you're when you're writing a resume it can be challenging, right?
[00:20:43.000]
But using some different language or how, let me, let me see an example of a dental assistance resume and see if I would like to use this one or some of that or oh I forgot I did you know do that 4 to 6 hand technique.
[00:20:57.000]
Procedure, you know, and I need to add that information in. So it may trigger some things too that maybe folks had necessarily thought about.
[00:21:05.000]
Now I can change. A couple things on here. I can change the font, the body, the font size, the colors.
[00:21:12.000]
I can reset the styling to the original. I can choose the page layout. So if I wanted to add a page break, I have that option available.
[00:21:20.000]
So I'm going through my navigation here on the left hand side. Resume examples, that's what we pulled in.
[00:21:27.000]
If I wanted to import my resume, I could do that here. Also, if I want to use my LinkedIn profile, I can add that information also.
[00:21:37.000]
Templates. Now this is where I can change. This is different than the examples. Examples is not only the template but also the content. But if I wanted to change the template, maybe I didn't like that one.
[00:21:50.000]
I want something. More along the lines of this. It changes it for me right in real time. So I can go through and take a look at each one and then I can do you can see the editing process here fairly intuitive where I can add an entry. I can add my website.
[00:22:09.000]
It walks me through and helps guide me. What these arrows are for are moving this box. Do I want to move this box up or down?
[00:22:17.000]
Same with this section. Do I want patient care to go above caregiver? I can do that.
[00:22:22.000]
I can remove any of these sections. Maybe I don't want caregiver. I'm going to delete that section.
[00:22:29.000]
I just deleted it so you can see all the different things that you can do. If I wanted to add an entry for education, I just can add that.
[00:22:34.000]
And click into. I can edit it right here if I wanted to or if I click on the little pencil it opens in a new box where I can edit that information here.
[00:22:49.000]
I find this very helpful.
[00:22:54.000]
My settings. Now this is important if you're not familiar with utilizing this tool. It exists in the current career prep and it will stay the exact same moving into the new one.
[00:23:05.000]
But I have some options. So I have the export only option, which is completely private and I'm just exporting that resume.
[00:23:14.000]
It will not have a shareable URL. It only can be downloaded as a PDF or Word document.
[00:23:19.000]
If I choose. Unlisted, this is kind of the best of both worlds where I have a shareable URL, but it won't be indexed by search engine.
[00:23:28.000]
So it keeps my information private. So I can use that URL. Then public makes my resume public, but that is one thing we note here is to be careful about sharing private information on public resumes.
[00:23:44.000]
Okay. And I can change my URL, however I want.
[00:23:48.000]
I'm going to change it back to unlisted and save.
[00:23:52.000]
Okay, to get a shareable link I have to have either unlisted or public selected. And here's that link.
[00:24:03.000]
That I can grab right at the top or if I wanted to download it anytime I can download my resume as a PDF or as a Word document.
[00:24:11.000]
So, My history is exactly that it takes me back to any previous versions of this. Resume that I had.
[00:24:19.000]
Alright. If I wanted to build a website.
[00:24:26.000]
I don't have any PIN yet, so I would need to create a new website. I can use the content that I had.
[00:24:35.000]
And pull it into My website. There's my dental assistant job.
[00:24:45.000]
And edit the field just as I did. Within that resume. You do have some options to change the background too.
[00:24:51.000]
So in upper right hand corner, if you don't like this image, you're not tied to it, you can change that background with an image of your choosing.
[00:25:04.000]
And then the page layout resume examples very similar to where we were at in the resume. Cover letters.
[00:25:13.000]
Create new and they do give me
[00:25:18.000]
This is different. Let me see. This is new. So you can create a cover letter that matches your resume.
[00:25:27.000]
There are simpler ones also. But this is the appearance and then here's the templates again.
[00:25:32.000]
And it's a pretty simple, straightforward cover letter that of course you would want your users would want to customize for the position that they've applied for.
[00:25:43.000]
Okay, and the last one is the career journal. Where I can create and again this is a great way it takes you through if you want a reminder you can set up a monthly email reminder to put your goals in.
[00:25:56.000]
You can add a new entry and then also publish that which will save that information here for you.
[00:26:05.000]
So we went through, let me go back to the homepage. Let me know if there are any questions.
[00:26:10.000]
Again, you lot can log in right from the home page. Or also in the upper right-hand corner.
[00:26:16.000]
This is also where you're log out is. I have that ability to browse my menu from this point.
[00:26:22.000]
I have the ability once I've added resources to the My Resources folder, I can quickly jump to.
[00:26:29.000]
The My Resources folder. I can see my goals if I've set any goals for myself.
[00:26:34.000]
To complete maybe I want to complete searching for my scholarships. I can do that. And that information is linked out here below.
[00:26:43.000]
Or I wanna explore more schools so I can search for schools and this this button this will take me exactly where I need to go so even from my resources folder I can go exactly where I need to and search for more schools.
[00:26:59.000]
Same with scholarships. And jobs. So I can search for jobs and it will open that tab up for me.
[00:27:10.000]
And then don't forget also from the homepage we have these 2 categories now. Instead of multiple so you're either you know are you looking for a school or scholarship or anything related to that because we have some information on financial aid there too.
[00:27:23.000]
Or are you looking to explore your career options and that has everything from job searching. To resumes to that career.
[00:27:28.000]
Assessment to career advice all available under that icon. And then of course everything's linked out below.
[00:27:43.000]
As I mentioned. And then you have that ability to set a goal.
[00:27:50.000]
Let me go back to my PowerPoint. I keep looking at that Q&A box and no questions.
[00:27:55.000]
So our Gale support site. We'll we do have some materials available there. We will be updating the ones that we have with the the new platform changes so you'll see new webinars that'll be added there.
[00:28:11.000]
We do have some great tools. For the resources also built out, but this is also where you'll find your mark records.
[00:28:19.000]
There are Mark records for the hub pages within our Petersen's resources. So you'll find not only find your access URLs if you're looking for your direct URLs you want to link this out on your library website.
[00:28:31.000]
We have the database icons and the widgets. Those are all staying the same. The MARC records are also available.
[00:28:37.000]
And then you have your training center as I mentioned. You have great tip sheets and I think we have we do we will have new PowerPoint slide decks available.
[00:28:48.000]
I'm actually working on those in the upcoming weeks. And then there's also additional training materials for your other FL resources, but we have tutorials and again recorded webinars and upcoming webinars.
[00:29:04.000]
And then marketing materials are also there, bookmarks posters, but also great. Icons and images for social media posts all shapes and sizes for all different types of social media.
[00:29:15.000]
So if you're looking to promote this resource, maybe you're focusing on job searching and you want to support the users coming into your library, then take a look at our marketing materials.
[00:29:26.000]
We have quite a few available.
[00:29:29.000]
As I mentioned, your MARC records, direct links to point, are they what they are direct links to point users to those subject hubs and any ebooks that are available.
[00:29:36.000]
So you'll find that Peterson's career prep. To download those mark records if you go into the Gale support site.
[00:29:48.000]
You'd actually go to product support and then mark records you'll see listed there. And career prep, you can just download them and they will be in a DAT mark file.
[00:29:57.000]
For you to add to your catalog.
[00:30:02.000]
And that wraps our session. If you need one-on-one support, our Gale customer success managers are fantastic at that.
[00:30:09.000]
So let's say you are looking for an additional support on adding your MARC records. They can help with that conversation.
[00:30:15.000]
They can also talk to you about usage. Work with you on maybe your access, how users are accessing the resource.
[00:30:19.000]
They can talk to you about this Gale support site and all the tools and features that are available there and so much more.
[00:30:29.000]
Training survey should pop up when you leave today's session. Please give us feedback on how you felt this this training went and also in that comment section if you would like to leave additional information on what you would like to see in the future for training for FL.
[00:30:44.000]
I would love to have that information because I will be meeting with the folks there. Soon. Actually coming up next week, I'll be down in Florida meeting with them.
[00:30:51.000]
And I'd love to share your direct feedback. With them on those survey results. And again, my name is Tammi Burke.
[00:31:01.000]

[00:31:27.000]

[00:31:37.000]

[00:31:55.000]

[00:31:56.000]
It's a really good one to Take a look at if you have time. All right, well, thank you all for your time today.
[00:32:03.000]
Again, any questions? Let me know. I'll stay on the line and thank you so much.

[00:30:51.000]
And I'd love to share your direct feedback. With them on those survey results. And again, my name is Tammi Burke.
