Duration: 15 Minutes
[00:00:02.000]
Welcome to your training for the Florida Electronic Library. Today's session is 15 minutes to mastery school and scholarship Search, and Gale Presents Peterson's Career Prep.

[00:00:13.000]
My name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer at Gale, and I thank you for taking time out of your day to meet with me to talk through and to see where you can find school and scholarship information.

[00:00:24.000]
If you have any questions, please feel free to use that Q&A box.

[00:00:30.000]
First, we're going to start with talking about access to the FEL resources and then a brief overview of Peterson's career prep.

[00:00:38.000]
Then we're going to spend the majority of our 15 minutes together in the school and scholarship search.

[00:00:44.000]
Any questions that you have, I encourage you to ask at any time, but I will leave you with not only my contact information.

[00:00:50.000]
But you have one-on-one support at Gale, and that is your Gale customer success managers and they are there to support you in all things scale.

[00:01:01.000]
Access to your FEL resources. If you are using your direct URLs for your library, that's fantastic. It's what I highly suggest because you can take a look at your usage

[00:01:12.000]
For your particular library. If you are accessing through the FEL website, this is the link or if you'd like to access through the FEL website, this is the link that you can share.

[00:01:22.000]
with your users and they can access all of their Gale resources and all of the resources available from the Florida Electronic Library.

[00:01:32.000]
Once you are on the site, you will find Gale Presents Peterson's right on the homepage. It also lives under, I think it's…

[00:01:40.000]
It's under high school.

[00:01:44.000]
And interest, you can go into interest and go into employment. So you'll find it in multiple places within the resource

[00:01:52.000]
Or of course, you can use the A to Z list and quickly find it that way too.

[00:01:58.000]
Let's talk a little bit about Gale Presents Peterson's Career Prep.

[00:02:04.000]
Within this resource, you are going to find and what we're focusing on today is the school search

[00:02:10.000]
And scholarship search. So it's a great way to find colleges and universities by location, cost, size, and so much more.

[00:02:17.000]
And then you can use similar criteria to find those scholarships using the scholarship search tool.

[00:02:23.000]
And those are automatically

[00:02:26.000]
that information there is automatically updated. So it's something that when there's a change, it is automatically updated. It's a setting that they have within the resource.

[00:02:36.000]
So keep that in mind that you're seeing that up-to-date information.

[00:02:40.000]
to explore careers, this is another way you can use the resource and one of our focuses for a future session.

[00:02:47.000]
But there are online quizzes that you can take to find the career that matches your interests and goals. Then you can find support with our resume builder.

[00:02:55.000]
We have career advice and even a job search tool available right within the resource.

[00:03:01.000]
And then we do have Spanish translation available. It's very easy to toggle between Spanish and English with the new translation feature that's located at the top of your page.

[00:03:13.000]
So you see that right here in the upper left hand corner, you can turn on that Spanish.

[00:03:18.000]
translation feature.

[00:03:20.000]
So again, today we are focusing on finding the school for you and the scholarship search tool and you can see in this section we have school search, scholarship search, and then this financial aid quiz.

[00:03:32.000]
So for any parents that are

[00:03:35.000]
Sorry about that. For any parents that are preparing

[00:03:39.000]
For their students going off to college.

[00:03:42.000]
I have a few in college and I remember just starting down this path how much it had changed since I had gone to college.

[00:03:49.000]
And understanding FAFSA.

[00:03:52.000]
That financial aid quiz can be really helpful and help you prepare for that. It's even better if folks are

[00:03:58.000]
if parents are doing it early on. I have multiple kids, so it helped, of course, helped me with my oldest.

[00:04:04.000]
But also my other children too, then I had a better idea of what to expect moving forward.

[00:04:10.000]
All right, with that, let's jump into the resource. Again, if you have any questions

[00:04:14.000]
Please feel free to ask in the Q&A box.

[00:04:17.000]
I will share with you first through the FEL portal where you're going to find

[00:04:23.000]
Gale presents Peterson's career prep again right on the homepage. You'll see it there.

[00:04:28.000]
Under Subjects.

[00:04:30.000]
You will find it under…

[00:04:34.000]
Oh, I'm sorry. Actually, I was in interest. Let me go back.

[00:04:39.000]
I believe it's under subjects too, but under interests.

[00:04:43.000]
underemployment. You'll find it there.

[00:04:45.000]
Peterson's career prep. And then that a to z list

[00:04:49.000]
You'll find it here too.

[00:04:51.000]
So I believe we put it under

[00:04:55.000]
Let's see if it's under Gale.

[00:05:00.000]
Yep, there it is at the bottom. Gale Presents Peterson's career prep.

[00:05:04.000]
All right, so I have it open.

[00:05:06.000]
And the first thing you'll want to do is

[00:05:09.000]
login. So log in or sign up. And the reason why you do want to do that is because you can save

[00:05:15.000]
scholarship searches, school searches, you can save that. You can put them into your

[00:05:21.000]
on my resources folder, as you can see here, and I'll model that for you today.

[00:05:25.000]
Plus, if you are using the Explore Career section.

[00:05:29.000]
Your resume will automatically be saved.

[00:05:32.000]
Here, of course, you can download it, but you do have that ability to save it, come back in at any time, make some quick updates.

[00:05:39.000]
And save a new copy or start a new copy from an existing save that you have. So it really saves that information.

[00:05:46.000]
It's a great way to

[00:05:48.000]
pick right back up where you left off. And then also you have that ability to put

[00:05:52.000]
content directly into the My Resources section.

[00:05:55.000]
Below, you'll see career tools as the first section and find a school or scholarship is the second. We already talked about this when I was in the PowerPoint where you have your school search, scholarship search, and then the financial aid quiz.

[00:06:08.000]
is what you'll find under that section.

[00:06:10.000]
Now I can log in or sign up.

[00:06:13.000]
I have that option in the upper right or I can do that right here.

[00:06:17.000]
on that homepage. Now it's remembering me, but if I wanted to sign up, I want to cover this real quick.

[00:06:23.000]
I would need my first name, last name, email address. If I don't want to use my email address.

[00:06:29.000]
I don't have to, but it is a really quick way to, if you forget your password, to reset your password and you wouldn't. And if you wanted to delete your account altogether, it's a very easy way to do that. But you can sign up without an email address.

[00:06:44.000]
You just click here and you can create a password instead.

[00:06:50.000]
Okay, let me go back to login.

[00:06:53.000]
And log right in.

[00:06:55.000]
I'm on my own computer, so it cookied that information for me, makes it nice and simple.

[00:07:00.000]
Now we're going to jump right into find a school or scholarship.

[00:07:05.000]
And you can see the three categories we have here.

[00:07:08.000]
Scholarship search tool and financial aid quiz I already added to my resources if I wanted to add the school scholarship tool, I could do that too by quickly just clicking on add to my resources.

[00:07:20.000]
And then it would land.

[00:07:22.000]
In my resources folder. As you can see here, there's a scholarship. I have a few others saved in here too.

[00:07:30.000]
My schools, if I had any schools that I saved, they would show up here.

[00:07:34.000]
Any scholarships, same thing.

[00:07:37.000]
And then jobs is a section we'll go over in the future. So let me go back to the homepage. I'm going to access that school and scholarship search.

[00:07:47.000]
I have about information here that I can find out a little bit more about what I'm seeing.

[00:07:52.000]
courses. It's not a course that you're taking. It's actually a school search tool. Once I click into school search tool, I can access both schools and scholarships at the same time.

[00:08:02.000]
And then I have my financial aid quiz here. So let me quickly model and then we'll jump into the financial aid quiz.

[00:08:09.000]
If I'm looking for a school.

[00:08:11.000]
I can search by keyword

[00:08:14.000]
I'm looking for school type, undergraduate or graduate.

[00:08:18.000]
Am I interested in distance learning? And then I have all of these filter options available.

[00:08:23.000]
So I'm just going to filter down to Florida.

[00:08:29.000]
And it filters down my schools immediately. It's alphabetical.

[00:08:33.000]
So you can see I have multiple pages here below.

[00:08:36.000]
over 10 pages of schools

[00:08:40.000]
I'm just going to choose Emery Riddle.

[00:08:42.000]
I used to live in Daytona and remember the university being right there.

[00:08:48.000]
Oh, and I'm sorry, I just added it to my schools. I meant to click what to access it. You click on the title.

[00:08:54.000]
If you save to my schools, it's going to land in that

[00:08:57.000]
my resources folder so

[00:09:00.000]
I was waiting for it to open up wondering what happened. Well, that was my mistake. So you can see Emery riddle

[00:09:07.000]
Here I have information, quick information about tuition

[00:09:11.000]
Total number of students, where the setting is.

[00:09:14.000]
And then to the left, I have majors and degrees, tuition and fees, student body information. Sometimes I'll have a gallery, I think in the other

[00:09:23.000]
Emory Riddle, we have listed. We have a gallery of pictures. So sometimes you'll see that. You can see the location on the map.

[00:09:31.000]
where this is located at.

[00:09:33.000]
And then again, I'm majors and degrees. I can jump down to

[00:09:37.000]
tuition, and student body information I can see there.

[00:10:23.000]
Okay, so I modeled for you how you can quickly filter by location. I can do the same thing for scholarship. I just select scholarship at the top.

[00:10:34.000]
And here, my filters have changed.

[00:10:37.000]
Now I'm looking at the award type, the amount

[00:10:41.000]
I like to filter to sometimes there's specific state of residence

[00:10:46.000]
Scholarships.

[00:10:48.000]
So looking at Florida and looking at florida

[00:10:50.000]
female and then I can see that really filters it down when I add just Florida and female.

[00:10:57.000]
If I want to keep it more broad.

[00:10:59.000]
I can remove.

[00:11:01.000]
female or maybe I'm looking at the state of study

[00:11:05.000]
Area of study is a great one too, because there's a lot of great STEM scholarships that are out there so I know

[00:11:11.000]
For one of my children, I take a look at that very often because

[00:11:15.000]
She's a science major, so we take a look to see a female science major. There's a lot of great scholarships that we find here. And again, I can click into it, find out more information about that scholarship, and I can also save it directly to my scholarship.

[00:11:31.000]
Let's select.

[00:11:33.000]
one just so you can see.

[00:11:35.000]
What you'll need, you get a quick look at what you need. You can apply now.

[00:11:40.000]
And then below is a little bit more information, eligibility requirements, how to apply. So you can quickly see if this is a fit for you.

[00:11:48.000]
Or if maybe you need to continue and keep searching. Deadline is always really important. Application deadline.

[00:11:56.000]
Let me go back and we're going to go

[00:11:59.000]
back to

[00:12:02.000]
this page and we're going to jump into that financial aid quiz

[00:12:08.000]
So I do highly suggest doing a little bit more exploration.

[00:12:12.000]
into this now this our quiz is set up like

[00:12:16.000]
Any tests that we have, so any practice tests that we have in any of the Peterson's resources.

[00:12:21.000]
You will find that we have this quiz

[00:12:26.000]
type platform that looks the same. So I can jump into my practice test.

[00:12:33.000]
And start testing my knowledge.

[00:12:38.000]
I can start that quiz. You can see if there's any type of time that it takes. It can take up to 120 minutes, but it really helps you understand

[00:12:45.000]
a little bit more about that financial aid. So like, when should I apply for need-based financial aid?

[00:12:51.000]
How often must I file for federal aid? This is really important with FAFSA being an annual thing that you have to do. Some schools also have additional

[00:13:00.000]
additional

[00:13:03.000]
financial aid that you need to apply for, or I should say similar to FAFSA, there's another pro or another unit of measure that they use

[00:13:12.000]
So it really depends on the university. Majority just use FAFSA.

[00:13:17.000]
But again, you can go through each question, test your knowledge, build that knowledge too. And then when you submit it, if your answer is incorrect, you would get the correct answer and an explanation.

[00:13:27.000]
So great way for parents and students to test their knowledge about that financial aid and to learn a little bit more

[00:13:34.000]
and understand what they have in store for them.

[00:13:39.000]
All right, we're right towards the end of our session, so let me go back to my PowerPoint.

[00:13:43.000]
and share with you where you can go for additional support. I will stay on if there's any additional questions.

[00:13:49.000]
We do have quite a few support materials available, including this training toolkit that can take you through. It's a click sheet.

[00:13:57.000]
We've curated all of our training materials, so it takes you through step by step from the basics to where you can go to find additional help.

[00:14:05.000]
And helps you with understanding what training materials we have available and you can

[00:14:11.000]
quickly use these links and jump directly to

[00:14:14.000]
those training materials.

[00:14:16.000]
We have video tutorials. We also have tip sheets available. This one is on creating an account in career prep.

[00:14:25.000]
We also, in that training center, you'll find that we have webinars, recorded webinars.

[00:14:30.000]
We have PowerPoint slide decks available. And for our other Gale resources that you have access to from the Florida Electronic Library, you'll find lesson plans, projects, scavenger hunts.

[00:14:41.000]
Your access URLs, of course, are there too. And then marketing materials, bookmarks, posters, we have all kinds of digital assets available, email templates, blog templates.

[00:14:52.000]
Great social media posts ready to go.

[00:14:54.000]
So that all lives on this link here and it will be included in your follow-up email.

[00:14:59.000]
But for those watching the recording, you can go directly to that support site that we've created for the Florida Electronic Library.

[00:15:07.000]
And that wraps our session. Again, my name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer here at Gale.

[00:15:11.000]
And if you have time to take the survey, if you'd like to use your phone, I have a QR code here. Otherwise, it should pop up when you leave. Just click continue.

[00:15:20.000]
We'd love to get your feedback. Specifically on

[00:15:24.000]
career prep, you have some areas where you can add some information. Maybe you're using it or plan to use it in the future for your programming at your library.

[00:15:33.000]
Please feel free to leave that information. I do share that internally and with the folks

[00:15:37.000]
At the Florida Electronic Library, and it's anonymous. So we'd love to hear what you have to say.

[00:15:42.000]
One-on-one support in all things Gale, your Gale customer success managers that information will also be in the follow-up email.

[00:15:49.000]
Same with tech support. If you need to contact your sales rep, there's information here. And then again.

[00:15:55.000]
that support site that we have available.

[00:15:59.000]
So that wraps our training session. Don't forget about that support site. We do have additional trainings coming up.

[00:16:05.000]
In the next couple months. So please register for those. We'd love to have you back and continue to build your knowledge with Gale Presents Peterson's Career Prep.

[00:16:13.000]
And then also we'll be adding more sessions going into the spring and summer.

[00:16:18.000]
To connect with us and share your success stories, you can feel free to tag us. We'd love to see that.

[00:16:23.000]
If you have any questions, let me know. But otherwise, thank you everyone for your time today and have a great rest of your day.
