Duration: 30 Minutes
[00:00:03.000]
So welcome to today's training session. This is your new resource and we are the topic of today is Explore Gales Chilton Library.

[00:00:12.000]
This training is for discus. My name is Tammi Burke. I'm a senior trainer at Gale.

[00:00:17.000]
Any questions that you have today, please feel free to use that Q&A box. Let's talk a little bit about Chilton Library.

[00:00:25.000]
Now this Chilton Library books, I'm actually the physical books do exist. They are green and the paper is very thin and a lot of our mechanics and and automotive shops will have they may have these you know in their in their shop and they do get ruined pretty quickly.

[00:00:44.000]
And nowadays, and actually for quite some time, our car enthusiasts, our mechanics, our CTE courses are using a lot of digital resources.

[00:00:52.000]
So we have children, Chilton Library, available 24, over 7. It has authoritative vehicle database.

[00:00:58.000]
It is authoritative. The vehicle database. It's got trusted automotive. It's Chilton Library has been trusted by automotive enthusiasts and professionals for over a hundred years.

[00:01:13.000]
So it's been around a long time but to have digital access to it and have a resource that's mobile responsive.

[00:01:21.000]
So you can look at it right on your phone and have a great video library available. For, from experts, not just from somebody on YouTube, but from actual experts.

[00:01:28.000]
Is a very helpful tool for all of your students or library patrons that are coming into your library.

[00:01:39.000]
And again, this is not just for a mechanics, it's also for our car enthusiasts or just someone like myself who doesn't know a lot about.

[00:01:47.000]
The cars but likes to try and fix things on my own simple things. Let's be realistic here.

[00:01:53.000]
Simple things on my own when it comes to cars. Or at least find the problem. I can't tell you how many times I have I have 3 kids and they are college kids so their vehicles are older how many times something doesn't work and it's as simple as a fuse replacing a few.

[00:02:10.000]
So and if I would have taken it in and that happened one time, which cost me a hundred $40 because my regular mechanic couldn't figure it out so I had to take it to the dealership and it was very expensive and it literally was a fuse that needed to be pulled.

[00:02:19.000]
And replaced. So. Go, it just goes to show you, but this is a great resource where you're going to find access to repair, maintenance, service information on most cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs on the road.

[00:02:39.000]
The resource offers detailed content to simplify even the most complicated tasks. So let's dive in.

[00:02:45.000]
Again, any questions? Just let me know in that Q&A box. First, let's get to know Gale's Chilton Library.

[00:02:52.000]
And then we are going to spend the majority of our time walking through the resource. Any questions that you have?

[00:02:57.000]
I will stay on at the end of today's training. If you have any questions, but I'll also share with you where you can go for additional.

[00:03:00.000]
Support on the Galet support site. So I'll share that information at the end of today's training and then those links will also be in the follow-up email.

[00:03:14.000]
To access your discus resources, hopefully you are all very comfortable with using the discus site but here's the link just in case I always like to include it in our training sessions.

[00:03:25.000]
Let's talk a little bit about Chilton Library and this is really on-demand automotive information.

[00:03:32.000]
You'll find that as I mentioned that this is a trusted resource. Resource from over a hundred years.

[00:03:34.000]
It's well known and it's loved by car enthusiasts and professionals alike. A large selection of vehicles, it's loved by car enthusiasts and professionals alike.

[00:03:47.000]
A large selection of vehicles alike. A large selection of vehicles, it contains detailed information on most years makes and models.

[00:03:49.000]
It contains detailed information on most years makes and models and this information is coming directly from the year's makes and models and this information is coming directly from the manufacturers.

[00:03:53.000]
So that question comes up a lot, and it is. It is directly coming from the manufacturers. So that's what you're going to find in Chilton Library.

[00:04:01.000]
Varied content, step-by-step service and repair information, you'll find a great video library, labor estimating, troubleshooting guides, images and diagrams and we also have the ASE test prep.

[00:04:09.000]
So great for CTE courses. We do have that ASE test prop available within this resource.

[00:04:22.000]
Navigation and accessibility have been enhanced. So this is a newly designed platform. It's been streamlined for both searching and browsing and it really ensures that users find exactly what they need.

[00:04:34.000]
The navigation buttons are featured prominently within the body of the resource we also have a table of contents.

[00:04:36.000]
Which leaves a clear breadcrumb trail. I always love to use my breadcrumb trail.

[00:04:46.000]
It makes it so much easier than using that back button. So it helps our users go back to the previous step quickly.

[00:04:50.000]
And then you'll have some enhanced enhanced readability tools that allow you users to enhance readability tools that allow users to listen, change the font type, the color and size to easily customize. There.

[00:05:05.000]
Their view. Within the resource.

[00:05:10.000]
Vind decoder and search are options that are available. So if you have the VIN number you can put that VIN number directly into the resource and it is right on the homepage.

[00:05:21.000]
And so you can search by the VIN number to find information specific to your automobile. And this would include an overview of specifications, safety, recalls.

[00:05:31.000]
You'll find all of this. And it's again, you can search by, you don't need the V.

[00:05:36.000]
Number, but you can just do a vertical search, but it is really helpful if you do have the VIN number because it takes you to your direct model sometimes like I know even I'll question oh is that an LE or is it an SE model I'm not sure.

[00:05:51.000]
With the vindicator, it takes that questioning out off. It's out of the equation.

[00:05:52.000]
So utilizing the then ensures that you're finding the most accurate content.

[00:06:01.000]
The video library access is now available right on the homepage so it's not just you'll find it under each in the content areas, but also on that homepage.

[00:06:13.000]
So it now is. Easily accessible from the home page. And the videos are organized by topic from breaks to engine mechanics to wireing and you'll find videos are both browsable and searchable.

[00:06:25.000]
Usually using the table of contents and I'm gonna model that for you today. Each video includes captions and can be downloaded for later use.

[00:06:30.000]
Always helpful. You can also change the speed if you need to slow it down. And you can change the speed on that too.

[00:06:39.000]
And I'll share again model that for you today. I mentioned the ASE test prep. Which we have quizzes available.

[00:06:45.000]
It's a very user friendly interface. It gives a clear information for the user on the number and the type of questions included.

[00:06:57.000]
So you'll see that right when you access the ASE test prep section. And then you can also get quiz results as you're seeing here.

[00:07:06.000]
So, and this is a new, the results are Much more visual now and it includes this helpful graph to better visualize your scores.

[00:07:18.000]
Alright, so with that let's jump into the resource again if you have any questions let me know the where you'll find it on the discus site.

[00:07:27.000]
Let me go into that. You can, the A to Z resources is always really helpful. You can go there and then you can search by if you want to look at any vendor like if you want to look specifically for Gale that's how I do it, but you can look at certain subject areas.

[00:07:46.000]
Or well grade level and and this again is a great one for your high school students any CTE courses.

[00:07:53.000]
Or by subject. Right now I did find it in facts and general reference. I'm not sure if it'll land in you know career resources or some of the other ones but let me just select that one and share with you and there's Chilton Library.

[00:08:06.000]
You'll see that green icon with the very happy mechanic leaning into his car there on the on the icon.

[00:08:09.000]
Okay, so let's go into the resource itself. And I want to talk about the top navigation here.

[00:08:23.000]
And then we'll select our year make a model. You get a bit of information so your users will be able to access and understand what exactly they're going to find within Chilton here on the homepage.

[00:08:36.000]
But let's talk about the vehicle search is where we're at now where I can select the year the make in the model.

[00:08:43.000]
Also recent vehicles will be listed here. So I did put one in to save us a little bit of time today.

[00:08:49.000]
The VEN decoder, quite straightforward. Just enter your VIN number. The nice thing is, is we do have an image of where you can find it at.

[00:08:57.000]
I always find it right by the windshield up in that upper corner, but it is also inside the driver's door jam and then under the hood, which I did not know it was there.

[00:09:07.000]
Of course it would be there that makes sense. The video library? Very intuitive where I can scroll.

[00:09:14.000]
Each of these, if I open the brakes up, will spend some times in some time in breaks today.

[00:09:19.000]
You can see all of the categories are sub subject categories that I can select, which will filter down my results.

[00:09:27.000]
I can put in a search like let's say I'm talking about breaks, so maybe I want to know more about bleeding the brakes.

[00:09:35.000]
So you can see here I have breaks is my heading and then I have video content organized below. So I can use all of those options.

[00:09:45.000]
When I select and I'm just gonna select this first one, the installation of the brakes.

[00:09:50.000]
You can hear, let me turn that video or the volume up a little bit here.

[00:09:58.000]
Notable extra steps. So I have the close captioning on these 3 dots right here. We'll give you the option to download this video.

[00:10:08.000]
And if you're on your phone, this could be really helpful. You can turn the captions on or off.

[00:10:13.000]
You can adjust the play speed and then picture and picture what that does is it gives me that little image here below.

[00:10:19.000]
So if I wanted to continue to work within my resource, I would still have this video playing in the bottom right hand corner.

[00:10:27.000]
So again, those all live here under the 3 dots. The volume is right here and then I can make this whole screen if I would like to make it whole screen.

[00:10:36.000]
So all those options are available on the video and as I already modeled for you very quick and easy to find content.

[00:10:37.000]
Either by scrolling and browsing through or doing a basic search. Looking for a certain term.

[00:10:51.000]
The ASE test prep quizzes. You can see here are the exam titles on the left hand side.

[00:10:58.000]
They're all multiple choice. And I can also see in the center how many numbers or how many questions there are for each one.

[00:11:06.000]
Once I select. It opens up that test quiz. For me or I should say that prep. Test prep quiz for me at the very bottom is where I can submit the quiz.

[00:11:15.000]
Now, I did answer questions and I will be a hundred percent transparent with you. I just clicked.

[00:11:26.000]
I didn't read the question. I just clicked so. Who knows, maybe I'll get one right.

[00:11:31.000]
But I figured I probably wouldn't really know anyways much about this. With my limited knowledge on You know, like I said, being mechanical and when it comes to cars, but I'm gonna submit that quiz so you can see the results.

[00:11:47.000]
Do you want to submit? Yes, I do. And then immediately I can see not only the question, I can see my answer and I can see the correct answer.

[00:11:59.000]
It looks like I did get a couple right, which is surprising. So question 5 I did pretty well on there, but majority.

[00:12:07.000]
I did a couple, couple okay here. But again, you can see the question, your answer, and the correct answer.

[00:12:16.000]
If you have already the correct answer, you wouldn't, your answer would be in green. And you wouldn't have anything over here on the right hand side.

[00:12:24.000]
And then you do have this graph where you can see the scoring. And you can retake these test as often as you like.

[00:12:29.000]
So you can definitely practice away. And then the last section I'm going to close or actually I'll just leave it open here. Ask an expert.

[00:12:39.000]
Let me go back to this here. Ask an expert. Now, ask an expert, you give, you have the ability to add a subject, email address, add your comments, or you can call directly looking for help and what that does is we have folks at at Gale that will be able to help find that information or help answer that that question.

[00:13:02.000]
So that's where that information is going to when you're asking an expert.

[00:13:08.000]
Alright, I'm going back to the homepage. Anytime you want to go back to the homepage, all you have to do is click in the banner on any of your gale resources and it'll take you back to the homepage.

[00:13:14.000]
Now let's look at

[00:13:22.000]
Vehicle. So if I were to come in here and select my vehicle which I didn't use my vindicoder and I do have one already set up a 20 ton ford escape.

[00:13:33.000]
Then everything I'm looking at on the left hand side is now going to be specific to my vehicle.

[00:13:41.000]
Now, there might be some like when you look at maintenance where you're going to add, have to add in the sub model.

[00:13:49.000]
This is what I was talking about, number of cylinders. If you use the VIN decoder, you wouldn't have to add all this in because it would automatically pull be pulled in for you.

[00:13:57.000]
But for just general repair. I can find information like I said we're gonna spend some time in breaks today When I, as I'm clicking, you can see my breadcrumb trail is developing.

[00:14:11.000]
If I'm looking at. Anti-lock. Now once I make that selection, my article is loaded and I might have It depends on what I'm looking at.

[00:14:25.000]
It might be step by step and there might be might be diagrams here what I selected has more text but again categorized we have some nice text features here.

[00:14:36.000]
Now what I want to share with you is once I select that article this is where I have some tools available.

[00:14:39.000]
I can listen to the text being read aloud to me by just clicking on the listen button. And it'll automatically start reading.

[00:14:49.000]
And it highlights as it's being read aloud. I can pause it, which I just did.

[00:14:56.000]
I can stop. I can also skip forward or backward. I can adjust the volume and then this is the reading speed whenever you see this which is really kind of a cute idea this odometer there, right?

[00:15:11.000]
So you're looking at like as if you were looking at the speed in your car that's what we use for the icon for reading speed.

[00:15:17.000]
Cute little play there, right? So that's what whenever you see that it is the speed of reading.

[00:15:22.000]
And then you'll see this hamburger button or this menu here, which I open it up.

[00:15:30.000]
I have a few other options. Under settings, This is where I can decide if I want to turn the text highlighting on or off.

[00:15:40.000]
What I would like to highlight very similar to your other Gale resources that you have from Discus where you can make those selections.

[00:15:41.000]
Here's the preview and we were seeing that. So if I make any of those changes, I can do that here.

[00:15:54.000]
I also have automatic scrolling. I can turn on or off the popup menu that is an option to turn on or off it is on now.

[00:16:03.000]
If I would like to enable my keyboard, I can do that.

[00:16:08.000]
And then restore to default settings. In the upper and the upper setting section here, I again have the volume, the speed.

[00:16:18.000]
I also have the ability to decrease or increase the font size. And then I have some text mode settings available.

[00:16:27.000]
Where I can change the font size, the font that's being used. And you can see we even have open dyslexic available.

[00:16:37.000]
The text colors and then the text spacing is just this. Option to scroll. Or a just from normal to that larger spacing.

[00:16:50.000]
Okay, and then I can also make this text box whole screen if I wanted to. Or to remove it.

[00:16:56.000]
I just close close it out. There are some help. If you see the little question mark, you can click on that for additional help.

[00:17:06.000]
Go back to repair. It really took me all the way out. I must have done something there. Call it my apologies.

[00:17:13.000]
Oh, I was in breaks. And I luck.

[00:17:18.000]
Okay. So some one of the settings I selected changed my screen on me. When I open this back up again, so that first section with settings, I can click and listen.

[00:17:31.000]
So if I click on a section.

[00:17:36.000]
It will read just that chunk of text.

[00:17:44.000]
I can enlarge the text here. There's text mode. Where I can make some of those same changes that we already talked about.

[00:17:56.000]
I also have Page Mask. Which gives me the ability to move this and I can increase or decrease how much space I want to show.

[00:18:06.000]
Which really brings that text, especially when you have a lot of text on your page, this can be a really helpful tool again.

[00:18:14.000]
It was. Page mask. And that gives you that blocking option. And then I also have the ability to download this as an MP 3 or if I need help.

[00:18:26.000]
I have the help option here and help is a really helpful tool because it talks about Read Speaker. Listening to the content, what each of these tools mean.

[00:18:36.000]
Our functionalities that I can change so that help option is a really helpful tool. And then if I wanted to translate, now this isn't as intuitive.

[00:18:47.000]
You do I can click and drag and that is when I get the listen button the dictionary and translate.

[00:18:55.000]
So I do have to highlight the chunk of text that I want translated. If I wanted it all, I could select all and then I click that translate option and I have 29 different languages to choose from.

[00:19:10.000]
And then the dictionary is there too. So compartment. Dictionary. And it'll give me, could not find, okay.

[00:19:20.000]
But it will give me that. Term from the dictionary. Might need to be built out a little bit more there, but you'd also have the ability to rate the article and print this off if you would like to print it off.

[00:19:35.000]
So that's the functionality of the resource when we're on a document. You can see this listen option and then again all of those tools live underneath this menu or hamburger button.

[00:19:40.000]
And then of course don't forget that if you highlight then you get a few other options to manipulate that text or customize that text.

[00:19:57.000]
Maintenance we touched into, labor estimating. This is really helpful within the resource because as I mentioned In my previous experience experiment, experiment experience, I went into my mechanic.

[00:20:13.000]
I usually go to the mechanic first and then if I have to I'll go to the dealership.

[00:20:18.000]
It depends on like I lease the car for myself so those go directly to the dealership because everything's still covered right under warranty.

[00:20:22.000]
But I usually go, I have a trusted mechanic and this is nice because it can tell you how much it may cost.

[00:20:32.000]
So the labor estimate can be really helpful time because labor is what really costs a lot. I mean sometimes it's the parts and the labor, but you can see if you're going to a dealer or here's Chilton time hours.

[00:20:46.000]
So that Chilton time hours is more that if you were to take it to a mechanic. Like a different like mechanic shop.

[00:20:53.000]
So you can see that estimation of, well, they're saying it's going to take 5 h, but here I'm seeing that it's going to take less.

[00:21:01.000]
Maybe I should go somewhere else to get help, right? So it gives you a little bit of information about that, labor estimating.

[00:21:08.000]
And then there's, so these are view options. You also have search options if I wanted to search for a specific component, I can do my searching.

[00:21:17.000]
So labor or the view is more browse where search is. Exactly that, searching. Bulletins and recalls?

[00:21:29.000]
So here too, I can see the list below. The issue date. There's a TSB number.

[00:21:36.000]
And then I have the PDF. Or I can use the read speaker. So if I wanted to see the PDF.

[00:21:45.000]
I just click on that and it opens it up and there's my service bulletin.

[00:21:53.000]
Okay. So again, that was just so long after I selected my vehicle. It starts with repair and it ends with bulletins and recalls.

[00:22:03.000]
And then of course I have some filter options here. Or research limiters that I can utilize. Then anything I need to print off, that print option is always available.

[00:22:15.000]
Okay. Are there any questions about Chilton Library? Like I said, it's a fairly intuitive resource.

[00:22:25.000]
The translate is a little bit hidden, but besides that, everything is there and we have this new new functionality available.

[00:22:29.000]
And also we do have a new system in place where we are able to add as soon as information is released from the manufacturer, we're able to add it very quickly to this resource.

[00:22:45.000]
So we do have some new functionality in place. On the backside, which you don't see, where you're getting access to that information quicker.

[00:22:53.000]
Because and and times at times we are waiting on the manufacturer to release the information but as soon as it's available we are adding it into the resources so you are getting the most up-to-date information here within Chilton Library that you have available from Discus.

[00:23:11.000]
Alright, let me go back to my PowerPoint and share with you where you can go for additional support.

[00:23:17.000]

[00:25:08.000]
So with that, we are right at the end of today's training. So I would like to thank you for your time.
