Duration: 45 Minutes
[00:00:04.000]
Okay, welcome Utah educators. We are here again today with Gale, Tammi B, welcome Utah educators.

[00:00:12.000]
We are here again today with Gale, Tammi Burke, our senior Gale trainer.

[00:00:14.000]
And just to introduce ourselves to get started, I am Davina Southoffoff. I am the library media specialist for the Utah State Board of Education.

[00:00:21.000]
Kayla, would you introduce yourself?

[00:00:24.000]
Yeah. I'm Kayla Towner. I am a technology specialist and the product manager for Utah's online school library from U.

[00:00:33.000]
Perfect. And we are going to be exploring some elementary resources that are offered by Gale. One in particular that we brought back this year we were able to get some funds for, we're going to be exploring National Geographic kids.

[00:00:56.000]
Yes, the one thing I love about National Geographic kids is well first off it helps support like all K through even like 14 year olds this type of material but it's more of a informational piece so if any of you have like slastic news or I don't know if I'm say it right New Zealand, but this if you don't have that, this is another way to get that kind of

[00:01:17.000]
content in a fun interactive way. You still get some of those really fantastic tools for those young learners that can't read.

[00:01:23.000]
They can listen to the content and you can check out books, magazines, videos, even images. To get them engaged and excited about content that you're teaching in your classroom.

[00:01:32.000]
So I'm really excited about having this in the library now.

[00:01:35.000]
Me too and Tammi is going to give us a really in depth exploration of these resources. So Kayla and I just wanted to introduce ourselves so you knew who we were and that we are here to offer our support using these tools with training, anything that you can think of, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

[00:01:54.000]
And then we are going to go ahead and get started and let Tammi give us all the good information.

[00:01:59.000]
So thank you, Tammi.

[00:02:00.000]
Great. Thank you. Thank you both. And welcome, everyone.

[00:02:04.000]
Thank you for taking time out of your day to join us for today's training. I will be turning off our, well, and we'll be all turning off our videos so we can get a nice clean recording and the video doesn't block some of the tools and features are in the upper right hand corner but I just wanted to welcome you all and say hello and let's get started.

[00:02:19.000]
So I do have a quick poll that I wanted to launch and just ask real quick so I can see who all is in the in the room today so I have an idea I always like to know if there are any teachers by chance it looks like we've got a couple teachers today.

[00:02:36.000]
That's excellent. So feel free to answer that quick question and as you are answering that question I will talk to you about what our training is going to focus on.

[00:02:46.000]
So we are focusing on it. National Geographic kids and also Gale in contact. Elementary and the reason why is because Gale In Context Elementary, National Geographic Kids is now integrated into Gale In Context Elementary.

[00:03:00.000]
So you still have them both as standalone resources, but, you can still, what the nice thing is, is that you can send your students to just one, which is Gale In Context Elementary, and get all of the content from National Geographic kids too.

[00:03:16.000]
So I'm going to end the poll and let me share that with you. I always like to see the results.

[00:03:18.000]
So we have a good amount of our librarians and media specialists we have some curriculum coaches teachers and then I always hate to put other, but we have some folks that land into that other category too.

[00:03:34.000]
So thank you again for joining us today. So I will talk about how to integrate these resources into the classroom, especially I know our librarians and media specialists work closely with the, teachers in their building.

[00:03:46.000]
So it's always good to know what tools and features are available within the resources along with the content that's there.

[00:03:55.000]
So let's get started and let me just share a brief agenda with you where we are going to first talk about access.

[00:03:56.000]
Of the resources just as a review, hopefully it's a review to you all. But an overview of the individual resources.

[00:04:08.000]
We're going to spend the majority of our time browsing the resources and talking about the tools and features.

[00:04:11.000]
Any questions that you have, please use that Q&A box. It is open and I will be monitoring it throughout the session.

[00:04:20.000]
And then I will share contact information. If you ever need that one on one support at Gale, we have a great support site that our customer success managers can help you find tools and features.

[00:04:27.000]
Ready to go on demand materials that we have, training materials, student activities, marketing materials all available on the support site.

[00:04:41.000]
First and foremost is accessing your resources that you have. From Utah's Online School Library.

[00:04:47.000]
Hopefully you already have this link posted on your library website and you're sharing it with your teachers in your buildings.

[00:04:48.000]
Because everything is nice and organized there on this beautiful site where elementary can click into their own category there.

[00:04:58.000]
And and access all of the resources that you have available.

[00:05:07.000]
Oh, and one more thing about, I should have mentioned authentication. Once you authenticate into, into the elementary, I believe it's into the elementary section, you won't be prompted for authentication.

[00:05:20.000]
Into the Gale resources. So once you're in, then you're all set. So you won't, it's not like you're, students will be constantly hit with how to log in again and again and again.

[00:05:32.000]
So it really makes it simple. We know and everybody at your Utah's online school library know the quicker we can get them into the resources the better so less clicks are always good.

[00:05:43.000]
So let's talk about your new Gale resource for elementary and that is Gale presents National Geographic Kids.

[00:05:50.000]
This is a great one for elementary and middle school. It's also good for high school. If you have any high schoolers maybe at home or you ever work with any of the teachers there at the high school building.

[00:06:00.000]
I know some folks cover, in districts cover a lot of schools. Our high school students can use it too, but really it is designed for our elementary and we have middle schoolers that like it too, but we always say you're never too old for National Geographic kids and it really is a great way to engage students, it broadens their horizon, it brings information into the classroom that they may not typically have access

[00:06:23.000]
to. It's authoritative and it's age appropriate content and it really opens the world up to our students.

[00:06:30.000]
It's very fun. National Geographic, I mean it's National Geographic, so you've got those great images and videos available within the resource.

[00:06:33.000]
Along with the books in the magazines and we cover science and nature and culture, archaeology, and space are all going to be here.

[00:06:46.000]
You have in now some of you may have purchased National Geographic Kids magazine for your library in the past.

[00:06:47.000]
You have all of the copies available here. So I'll the way back to 2,009 are all available within this resource along with video content books and then those downloadable images.

[00:07:07.000]
A review of your Gale resources, the second resource we are going to touch into today. Oh, I should you have quite a few Gale resources available, not just elementary and national geographic kids, but I do wanna point out that your high school just or secondary folks just so you are aware have received high school and global issues so those 2 resources are available in the in contact suite so you have the 3 building blocks so those of you coming to us from

[00:07:35.000]
L, you are the starting point for these resources and we always say I always say this to I was former elementary school teacher here, but I always say if you have at the middle school level, if you have elementary students coming in that really understand research, go back to that elementary school, bring them chocolate, those librarians and teachers have worked really hard to get them used to using those resources.

[00:07:57.000]
So I'm bravo to you all for doing all that work. I know firsthand it is not always an easy task but boy are they inquisitive at that age.

[00:08:03.000]
And curious so these 2 resources are fantastic for that inquisitiveness and really to help answer that curiosity that they have at that age.

[00:08:20.000]
And then you did receive some new Gale ebook titles. They are immediate literacy, so not really at the elementary school level, but something I like to mention.

[00:08:29.000]
And then of course you have quite a few other in context. Resources within your collection here. One I do want to point out before we move on is Gale In context biography.

[00:08:37.000]
Now this is definitely geared more towards definitely high school and our middle school students use this resource a lot but this could be a really good one for parents.

[00:08:43.000]
If they're ever working with students like we do a wax museum here in Michigan and the students have to find all this biographical information.

[00:08:53.000]
We have a lot of great content available already. In Gale In Context Elementary, biographical information, but if parents are wanting a little bit more, then I would suggest sharing that and letting them know that that is an option.

[00:09:11.000]
But again, the content is higher level. So keep that in mind. But it is a good resource for parents and teachers too.

[00:09:20.000]
Gale In Context Elementary is a great resource to find all of that premium content both in the informational reference content, top periodicals, it's multimedia.

[00:09:33.000]
So videos, images you're going to find here. And then all of the National Geographic books and magazines.

[00:09:34.000]
Videos and images are also integrated into Gale In Context Elementary. It's great to support curriculum standards so you have frequently studied topics you'll find them here on the homepage.

[00:09:54.000]
So you have frequently studied topics. You'll find them here on the homepage. And within our topic tree, animal, animal life, nature, history, geography, science, health literature, and so much more.

[00:09:56.000]
And to enhance teaching and learning, this really is a safe place to find those answers to practice their research skills and explore those interests that we know that they have at this age.

[00:10:15.000]
Few tools I want you to keep in mind before we jump into the resources. You do have the ability to share content using the get link tool.

[00:10:23.000]
This is shared across all of your Gale resources. You have the ability to create a persistent URL back to any spot within the resource.

[00:10:31.000]
You can directly share content to your Google classroom if you're using Google Classroom. And then there's the Sun to option where you can send content.

[00:10:40.000]
To Google Driver Microsoft Onedrive.

[00:10:45.000]
Devina and Kayla, there's a question in the question Q&A box that could you grab that about the password?

[00:10:53.000]
Thank you so much. To support accessible learning, we have the translate feature, the font size, listen and display options all available.

[00:11:00.000]
You have the ability with display options to change the font, not just the font size, but the font itself.

[00:11:10.000]
We have open dyslexic available as one of the font choices. We also have, the ability to change the color behind the text on the screen.

[00:11:18.000]
So a great tools to support accessibility. I'll talk more about those and model those. When we jump into the resources to encourage analysis and really just to develop those early research skills we have highlights and notes.

[00:11:32.000]
It's a great way to promote deeper learning with color coding. And then to develop or continue to develop those research skills in our G and context elementary, you have that great topic tree, which starts them out with that larger category and visually helps them drill down to the contents.

[00:11:47.000]
They're looking for. Topic Finder is available in in National Geographic Kids. It's also available in all of your other gale resources.

[00:12:00.000]
And then the great citation tool is there if you're teaching citations at the elementary level, that tool is a.

[00:12:04.000]
But citations are automatically attached to everything within your resources. So with that, that was our brief overview.

[00:12:12.000]
Let's dive into, we're gonna start with your newest resource and that is National Geographic Kids.

[00:12:21.000]
National Geographic Kids, you can see here on the homepage a few things I want to point out to you.

[00:12:27.000]
You start out with the subject categories with kids magazines, books, videos, and pictures here on the homepage where I could access if I just wanted to go all to just all of the magazines.

[00:12:39.000]
I could do that. And again, remember you have all of that content available. It is unlimited access.

[00:12:40.000]
There's no check in or check out. So if you previously you had been purchasing magazines for your library here you have them digitally available to everyone so it makes it a lot easier and hopefully helps you save a little bit of money.

[00:12:59.000]
Looking also at the toolbar here, the contextual toolbar, you have the ability to toggle the sound on and off.

[00:13:07.000]
And what that is, is that is to help your students navigate through this resource. So to help with the navigation meaning, let me turn that sound on and I'm going to turn.

[00:13:18.000]
Make sure you can hear this all right.

[00:13:22.000]
Kids magazine. So it's just to navigate books. Through the resource itself. This is separate than the listen feature that you have available.

[00:13:32.000]
So it really aids in that navigation through the resource. You have the ability to explore topics and we will come back to that in a moment.

[00:13:40.000]
Browse magazines and then we have our search history, which is session based and get link, which provides a persistent URL back to any spot within the resource.

[00:13:50.000]
We are going to start with my favorite section and that is books and a couple of section and that is books and a couple of things I want to show you.

[00:13:57.000]
I'm going to share it with you. Not only the content and navigation, but some hidden gems that we have available within the resources.

[00:14:04.000]
So if we are in books, there, there's a publication I want to mention to you.

[00:14:09.000]
It's all National Geographic, but you can see we have 726 books available.

[00:14:14.000]
They are sorted and filtered by newest here. Something I want to share with you is in the filter your results section I can utilize when we're going to use some of these tools.

[00:14:22.000]
The subjects or the search within, but before we do that, I want to point out one real quick publication title.

[00:14:46.000]
We start out in the cover and I can click through each page. This is how our all of our books work within National Geographic Kids and also Gale In Context Elementary.

[00:14:58.000]
But what I want to jump and show you is in the table of contents. I'm gonna open up the main body here because something that we've been asked for a lot at Gale is graphic novels.

[00:15:11.000]
And we actually have the latter series has a graphic novel in each one. So here's one on honoring honest Abe.

[00:15:18.000]
So this is one of those. Hidden gems that we have available in the content and again the latter series you can see that there are 5 different genres here available and one of them happens to be a graphic novel.

[00:15:33.000]
I don't know if you're getting asked for that a lot in your schools, but it's something that we're hearing a lot at Gale In I know that they're working on, some new projects based on that.

[00:15:42.000]
So again, I what all I did was click into books and then I filtered the publication down to just the latter series and I can remove that.

[00:15:52.000]
And it's not giving me that little x there this. Let me go back to my results.

[00:16:00.000]
And it's not letting me remove it. Hold on 1 s here. Zoom sometimes. And this happened yesterday during a training.

[00:16:08.000]
I figured out. After the session. It sometimes makes the resources.

[00:16:14.000]
It doesn't really. There's always like a little something a little glitch. It works great on your end and then I'm seeing a little bit of something happen and that's because of Zoom unfortunately, but we can work through it, not a big deal.

[00:16:24.000]
That is very simple one to to cover. So looking at the books again, if I wanted to filter by, say, subjects.

[00:16:36.000]
And I'm interested in Let's go national parks. There's 15 titles available. I can see those titles listed here.

[00:16:48.000]
If I wanted to share this. What I could do is I could use my get link tool. So I filtered down and what it does is it filters down by subject the books, but it also you can see I have kids magazines, videos and pictures.

[00:17:03.000]
So my Getty tool will take me back. To the books but I still have pictures and videos available too on that subject.

[00:17:12.000]
See, this is what was missing in the last one. Zoom was eliminating it from that longer title.

[00:17:18.000]
So I can remove that subject category. But again, I want to share this. I use the get link tool.

[00:17:20.000]
It creates a persistent URL back to this exact spot. And my students have everything. National Parks.

[00:17:35.000]
Another option I have is if I wanted to, let's say I wanted to search within. And I wanted to look for dolphins.

[00:17:42.000]
Everything we have available on dolphins. That is a great way to do that by using that search.

[00:17:45.000]
And here are all of my books I have available on Dolphins. Now, some will be, as you can see this one.

[00:17:55.000]
A dolphin on the cover and others will have dolphins somewhere within that book.

[00:18:01.000]
Alright, if I'm using Google Classroom and I wanted to pull this into Google Classroom.

[00:18:07.000]
Not only can I pull individual books or magazines or videos, but I can at the larger level pull a large amount of information like this directly into Google Classroom.

[00:18:19.000]
And let me show you what that looks like. Let me share that real quick. Sometimes it works and sometimes.

[00:18:26.000]
I have to share it separately. So. This is my second grade class. I'm gonna make an announcement.

[00:18:34.000]
See if all the same options, create an assignment, ask a question, make an announcement, create material if you're using Google Classroom.

[00:18:40.000]
I click go. I can make my announcement. Maybe that and I'm gonna mention that this is on dolphins.

[00:18:49.000]
And post. Now I can view that. Let me go back to my browser before I click view.

[00:18:59.000]
And it posts right here in a moment, you'll see that link. Coast below. And so it's really easy.

[00:19:07.000]
For my students to see this information and go directly back to. That content that I filtered down for them.

[00:19:17.000]
And I can do that. I can pull anything I can create a link for. I can also pull into Google Classroom.

[00:19:23.000]
If you're using a learning management system, you can use that get link tool and copy and paste it into your assignments.

[00:19:29.000]
Maybe you're using Canvas or Schoology. You can use the Get Link tool and put it right into your assignments.

[00:19:35.000]
Alright, and some of our books too, like you'll see some of them have the reading level, this one is a level reader 3.

[00:19:40.000]
If at the very back of the book.

[00:19:47.000]
You'll see. Let me go all the way to the end here maybe. There we go. You can see what the levels, you know, level one is a co-reader starting to read together, 2, 3, 3 is a fluent reader.

[00:19:58.000]
So you get some information on the back. Some of our books also have a letter to parents. You can print these off so you have that print option available and you can create links directly back to the individual books if you wanted to share this individual book with a student or with your group of students you could.

[00:20:18.000]
Okay, before I leave books, I want to show you one of my. Okay, hidden jumps that I like to share.

[00:20:26.000]
So let's say I wanted all of the level one books. I can do a basic search.

[00:20:34.000]
And it will pull back my magazines but also all of my books. So I have a couple of magazines that came that filtered down to that level one, but if I wanted to share all of my level one books.

[00:20:47.000]
This is a great way to do it. So a basic search, level one, level 2, level 3, use the get link tool.

[00:20:54.000]
And provide that persistent URL back to those 149 titles that we have available.

[00:21:04.000]
So do they have to be logged in to Gale in context for the link to work? Pamela so do they have to be in to I think you're talking about the get link tool so when they're using get link.

[00:21:18.000]
And you provide this URL and they click into it or through Google Classroom they will automatically be taken to the exact spot.

[00:21:28.000]
Grab that link for so they don't have to log in to the resource first they can open up exactly where you want them to be so that singular link will take them to exactly where you want them to be.

[00:21:33.000]
I hope that answers your your question. I know that's a good that's a good question too.

[00:21:43.000]
Like do they have to log into the resource first, then click the link? No, they can go directly to exactly where you've put you've sent them to.

[00:21:50.000]
And it, and something too, a lot of our elementary folks will do, especially in the library, is they'll use a QR code generator.

[00:21:57.000]
So they'll use the get link tool, pull it into a QR code generator. And if you happen to have, you know, a classroom set of iPads, for example, that they can come up and scan and then you can go to that exact spot.

[00:22:10.000]
So could you imagine if you had even if you had a half of a set or anything like that in your library where they could scan a QR code and you have the entire group.

[00:22:14.000]
Going into the same book because you've generated that QR code with that link and everybody's on the same page.

[00:22:25.000]
It really is a great tool to use and it's available that you know, get link tools available in all of your gale resources.

[00:22:34.000]
So keep that in mind too. It's just a best practice. And it's not an idea that a librarian had shared with me.

[00:22:37.000]
Years ago and I still share it to this day. So going back to. And whenever you wanna go back to the main page or the homepage of your resources, just click into the banner and it'll take you back and that's across all of your Gale resources.

[00:22:55.000]
So we took a look at the books and doing a search. I love the video content of available here.

[00:23:03.000]
Image, the images are fantastic. You can use the same filter option. So if I click into pictures, I have all of these filter options on the right hand side.

[00:23:13.000]
If I go back out to that homepage, something else I want to share with you, are the Explore topics section.

[00:23:21.000]
So I can explore my topics, which is we have some very animals is very popular at elementary and you all are probably shaking your heads.

[00:23:25.000]
Yes, it is. But it really is. In this resource and Gale In Context Elementary, it's a really popular subject, but also you have, you know, history and people and cultures and places.

[00:23:39.000]
So you can go to one of these subject categories. Let's say we're gonna go into history here.

[00:23:45.000]
And it is already curated information. So the books, the videos, the pictures, magazines have all been curated to the topic of history.

[00:23:56.000]
Again, I can create a link back to this content or I can click into one of these categories like Kids Magazines.

[00:24:05.000]
And filter that content down.

[00:24:08.000]
Always an option. Now something I didn't share with you and that was. I'm gonna save it for Gale In Context Elementary, but I mean, I will share with you that it always exists here too, but there is a listen feature that is available with within both of these resources and I said it it's at the document level and I want to show you an elementary because there's 2 different

[00:24:30.000]
ways that your students will view it, where it's the same, format here. So let me jump into that one here in just a moment.

[00:24:38.000]
And so that's a bit of a teaser. That I just to you. Another thing of course you can do is do a.

[00:24:46.000]
Basic search this your students primarily are almost a hundred percent of the time from based on our analytics they are clicking pointing and clicking so they're jumping and they're using those subject categories but if you did a basic search your search results would look like this.

[00:25:03.000]
I did ancient Egypt. I have all my videos and images available. This is one of my favorites.

[00:25:10.000]
To study when I was in school Egypt and with anything mythology, Greek gods, all of that stuff I loved.

[00:25:17.000]
And so this, I mean, having these images here available in that video content and devouring these, you know, King T.

[00:25:27.000]
This information would have been so cool to have as, a kid and be able to look into that.

[00:25:33.000]
And you can, you know, there's a lot of features that you have available here. At the top, I can zoom in.

[00:25:41.000]
And click and drag that text. Zoom out. I can make this whole screen.

[00:25:49.000]
All those features are available and I zoomed in too much here. Let me zoom out. There we go.

[00:25:57.000]
Exit that whole screen. So those features are available at the top of your of your resources, your magazines and your books. Same with videos.

[00:26:06.000]
You can make them, you know, make them whole screen. 2 there so let me know if there any questions on this resource that is what I wanted to cover here within G or within Gale presents National Geographic Kids.

[00:26:20.000]
And now I want to show you the integration of that into Gale In Context Elementary. So you can see.

[00:26:28.000]
How it works. So on the whole page, where you're going to find a lot of the National Geographic materials is under magazines.

[00:26:38.000]
All of the other materials or content are going to show up in your search results. So they are on all the topic pages or if your students do a basic search, they're going to find all of that kind.

[00:26:44.000]
But you'll find here the magazines. Here are all those magazines so you can see, 2023 and we can go all the way back.

[00:26:57.000]
The pages you can see, 2023 and we can go all the way back. The pages are listed here at the bottom.

[00:27:01.000]
You can see multiple pages are available. Of those magazines. So we can go directly into. A magazine.

[00:27:10.000]
And once again, as I just previously shared with you, flip through the pages, zoom in, zoom out, make it whole screen, all of those options are available.

[00:27:21.000]
Okay. Now let's look at this. A couple of things I want to point out to you is you can see basic search and advanced search are here.

[00:27:30.000]
We have that ability to toggle the sound on and off just as we did in National Geographic Kids.

[00:27:36.000]
And again, videos. Pictures. That sound on sound off helps me navigate through the resource.

[00:27:46.000]
Here on the home page, we have I wonder questions where it's linked to content available within the resource.

[00:27:47.000]
You can see that I wonder question and then the find out where students can go to find that information or click next question.

[00:28:00.000]
This is really again they're curious and we want to capitalize on that and get them exploring in the resource.

[00:28:08.000]
We also have what we call the topic tree. Where you have different subject categories here on the home page.

[00:28:15.000]
Animals is, as I mentioned, very popular. And you can see all of the sub subject categories.

[00:28:22.000]
When I click into mammals, you're getting that higher level piece of information and then below are all of the topic pages.

[00:28:31.000]
Now, cats and dogs are 2 of our most popular except for sometimes when it's shark week, then sharks tends to be high on that usage list.

[00:28:40.000]
But if I click into one of those topic pages. We're gonna go to a different one today too, but I wanna show you.

[00:28:44.000]
Dogs where you have that image and essay overview. We have quick facts in the middle, but I want to share with you here's those National Geographic books showing up in my search results.

[00:28:55.000]
They're also going to show up in my pictures and in my videos. So there it's all here for your students in one place.

[00:29:06.000]
So both are available either National Geographic Kids as a standalone or if you want to bring them into Gale In Context Elementary where they have both resources.

[00:29:12.000]
Available. You have that option too. We just want to make sure that they are accessing this information.

[00:29:19.000]
And diving into it. So if I go back to mammals. I'm actually going to go into Tigers.

[00:29:29.000]
This is a new one that I've been. Using a lot and you do have some great.

[00:29:37.000]
Books available and magazines. What I want to share with you within the books and I tease you on this in the last one is you do have the ability to listen to the text being read aloud.

[00:29:45.000]
Now this is a little different than our. Our regular e-book so our ebooks when we if you ever access gale ebooks you have to be in text view to have the listen feature available.

[00:30:05.000]
When you are in book view like this that we're seeing you don't have that listen option available.

[00:30:10.000]
It's something that we've done for our elementary students because they really need it. They need to be able to listen to that text being read aloud to them and also see the images.

[00:30:19.000]
So it's something that's available in both Gale In Context Elementary and also in National Geographic Kids.

[00:30:28.000]
So you'll see that little listen button at the top. And you can listen to. Tigers are big and beautiful animals.

[00:30:37.000]
There are strong and powerful too. So it'll read the text allowed to you. Now, talk about the Listen feature again because there's a few other options when we are in the text view.

[00:30:45.000]
Within the other parts, there are other content within this resource. So that's a tool I wanted to point out.

[00:30:56.000]
And then on the left, you have some additional tools like the table of contents, which you saw me access in National Geographic Kids.

[00:31:03.000]
We have the search option where it can search for words or phrases.

[00:31:10.000]
There we go. Webster's dictionary is available. And then the full citation if you were to need that.

[00:31:19.000]
Alright, let me go back to my tiger's results.

[00:31:25.000]
I'm gonna go into like that topic page. The topic page 2 has an image and essay overview.

[00:31:32.000]
Let me click into keep reading so you can see. We have level one and 2 so you can change this in real time.

[00:31:41.000]
So level one is generally lower elementary. Level 2 is generally upper elementary. The image changes too, so students know that they have made that change.

[00:31:51.000]
And you'll see some different text features. Sometimes we have main ideas. This one happens to have words to know.

[00:31:59.000]
I see words to know a lot at the level one. It's the same content just the vocabulary.

[00:32:00.000]
Is different. This is higher, little higher level. So you're going to find that same information.

[00:32:10.000]
It's just going to be at a level one.

[00:32:16.000]
Over on the right hand side when we're at the document level any document that we have available you have tools to support accessibility.

[00:32:24.000]
So we have the listen feature here just as we did in the books. We can listen to the text being read aloud.

[00:32:32.000]
Another feature and one that I love that is, Let me turn this setting on. So under the little gear, see this little gear here.

[00:32:43.000]
You have the ability to make some changes to what's being highlighted. So the word and sentence are being highlighted, what colors are being highlighted and you can change the text color.

[00:32:52.000]
But what I love for especially for elementary is having the ability to turn on the enhanced text visibility. So this is another hidden gem and also slow down the speed.

[00:32:56.000]
I will warn you, it really slows it down. So be prepared for that. That it slows it down very slow, but it is very helpful, especially for our English learners, having that slower speed.

[00:33:14.000]
But the enhanced text visibility as again, former teacher at the elementary level. I love it for my emergent readers because when I click play now, It pulls out.

[00:33:24.000]
Loungees on a rock and puts it. A tiger lounge. It's reading the the caption right there.

[00:33:30.000]
But it pulls that text out into this text box. And of course it helps support students.

[00:33:38.000]
I had a librarian. From Texas share with me that she had issues with dyslexia and she said that the blues and greens and pulling it out on the page is similar to overlays and it really helped her.

[00:33:49.000]
And this was prior to us adding the display option with the dis the open dyslexic font.

[00:33:57.000]
But I just always like to share that because a lot of students love this feature and for your emergent readers it's really pulling that text out on the page for them as they're listening to it being read aloud.

[00:34:09.000]
So again, that was just a little setting here in the under the gear. I'm gonna turn it off this time and then close it.

[00:34:14.000]
And it'll stick with your students throughout their session. There's also the ability to download it as an MP 3 and another feature too if you ever highlight a chunk of text on the page and then click the listen button then it will just read that chunk of text.

[00:34:31.000]
So that's another little tip there. I have the ability to increase or decrease the font size.

[00:34:33.000]
You can see it's increasing here. The display options and I'm gonna. Let me go into an article.

[00:34:45.000]
That has. Let's go to this one. Nope, it still has lots of images. I'm trying to get to mind more of a text heavy.

[00:34:55.000]
Go into this magazine article. That's a little better. To share this, it really shows better when you have a lot of text and not an image at the top.

[00:35:03.000]
But it's still will change but behind that image. So what I'm sharing with you is the display options.

[00:35:08.000]
Where I can change the color behind the text. I can change the font if I wanted to change it to open dyslexic.

[00:35:17.000]
I can increase the line letter. And word spacing great for any students that are having tracking issues.

[00:35:26.000]
So all those features are available and this is another feature that once your students set it up on the first document, it sticks with them throughout the session.

[00:35:35.000]
If I want to go back to my default settings, I just click back to default settings. And then I have the translate feature and I can translate the article.

[00:35:44.000]
We're at over 40 languages here. I also have the ability either here or at the very top of my page to translate the navigational tools.

[00:35:49.000]
We're at 34 languages here for the navigational tools so these 2 tools are separate and we did that really because again, we're students are learning English so we give the option.

[00:36:05.000]
Do you would you like both translated? Just one the other sometimes it's really helpful for parents to have that ability to translate the navigational tools or translate the article so those features are available.

[00:36:10.000]
And if your student has translated the article, we are at again, 40 languages here for the text to be translated into if they translate the article and click the listen button, we're at 24 languages there and they're the most used languages.

[00:36:30.000]
So they can listen to the text being read aloud to them and say Spanish. So those are linked together.

[00:36:37.000]
And then the little information icon is the article information. And the reason why we hit it underneath that information icon is because teachers asked us to.

[00:36:49.000]
They said we need that real estate at the top of the page so we hit it for them but it is there and available.

[00:36:55.000]
Okay, let me know if you have any questions. I'm going to share a couple of features with you.

[00:37:01.000]
Let me go back to tigers. If I wanted to filter down my content, so I'm gonna go into my book articles.

[00:37:07.000]
I have again you saw in when we were in the essay overviews the ability to switch from a level one to a level 2.

[00:37:15.000]
I have content levels here. Now you will find and as librarians and media specialists you know that this happens a lot especially with magazines and newspapers where an article a word may skew the article a little bit higher level.

[00:37:29.000]
So you do have some level threes and you know when I was working with my students I had students that were ready for that higher level reading so it's nice that we do have some of that available within the resource.

[00:37:41.000]
Level threes is generally we say generally in quotation marks, middle school because we know kids don't fit into a box.

[00:37:42.000]
But that's generally middle school reading level that lex I'll measure you can see it's related to but if I just want I didn't want any level threes or if there happened to be anything higher.

[00:37:54.000]
I just want my ones and twos. I can select those and apply it and it'll apply that to all of my content at once.

[00:38:06.000]
And now I can use my get link tool and share this with my students where I filtered that down.

[00:38:07.000]
For them. All of my filtering results are over here and they're very straightforward publication date, publication, title, subject, document, type, being able to search within are all available on the right hand side.

[00:38:24.000]
And a great skill to teach to students whenever they want to remove a filter, they can just click on.

[00:38:34.000]
Something else I wanna share with you, let's go into. Geography. And you. S.

[00:38:41.000]
States, let's go to Utah.

[00:38:50.000]
You can see information that we have. You happen to have an ebook available from National Geographic kids, magazines, news articles, biographies.

[00:38:57.000]
But we are adding, and we see I've seen it a lot with for all of the states.

[00:39:01.000]
It's available for a lot of the animals. I love the dogs ones because it talks about the most popular breeds and you know that kind of information but the Utah state symbols so if this is being taught in your schools it's nice to have this available use your get link tool share this with students it's visual you can print it off you can download it you can email it all those options are available your contextual

[00:39:26.000]
toolbar is here if I wanted to send this to my Google Drive, I could send it directly to Google Microsoft email.

[00:39:32.000]
That's what's under that paper airplane. Download print. Again, the get link tool is there.

[00:39:39.000]
So we have these infographics available. Within the resource too, but you're going to find those infographics on underneath the images or picture section there.

[00:39:49.000]
Okay, any related topics are at the very bottom of the page. So those are related topic pages that we have available.

[00:39:58.000]
And then the last thing I want to share with you, let me go back to that homepage is highlights the notes.

[00:40:06.000]
Let's go into another category. I'm trying to share as much content as possible in 45 min with you all.

[00:40:07.000]
So let me show you types of plans. This is one of our newer categories, but plants is something that is in everybody's curriculum.

[00:40:15.000]
So we have, we pulled it out and put it on the homepage and gave it its own category.

[00:40:24.000]
So types of plants. And I'm gonna scroll down to types of plants here and you can see that I wonder questions are also here on these pages and they're related to the topic that we're on.

[00:40:36.000]
So if I go into types of plants, I can see the books, the book articles, magazines, news biographies.

[00:40:42.000]
We have great pictures available and video content. Lifecycles is one of my favorites to do a search on because we've got great content there the water cycle.

[00:40:49.000]
We also have labeled and unlabeled diagrams available. So, and if you look at, the water cycle, you'll see them there.

[00:41:01.000]
But I wanted to share with you. Looking at this that you have, I shared the already the ability to share with in Google classroom is Google Drive.

[00:41:12.000]
So let me talk to you about highlights and notes. I'm gonna go into Let's go to this first article here.

[00:41:18.000]
Highlights and notes is a great many lessons to teach, especially at this early age. I have, you can see how large I made that.

[00:41:28.000]
There we go. It's a little better. Highlights and notes they can click and drag over a chunk of text so if you have some main ideas maybe if we're teaching them about main ideas and how to find them.

[00:41:35.000]
In the text, here's the main idea. That's in yellow and. Maybe I just want to label it main idea.

[00:41:48.000]
And then they go down into this. The article and identify that main idea within the article. Now, I did have some elementary folks share with me.

[00:41:59.000]
This tool would be great for students that are looking for information, maybe argumentative essays, they're writing.

[00:42:07.000]
And they want something for the opening or the beginning, the middle and the end of their paper and they can color categorize it.

[00:42:16.000]
So maybe for the body of their paper it's in blue and they pull out and save this information because if they've done some highlighting they can send this marked up document to their Google Drive Onedrive email, download or print.

[00:42:29.000]
They also are building out this highlights and note section and we have a 15 min to mastery session on highlights and notes because it is a little bit higher level but your upper elementary students might be ready for this where they're just pulling out what I like to call digital notes and they can just send this information to their Google Drive and then Microsoft on email, download or print.

[00:42:52.000]
They can edit these notes before they send them. I had a teacher share with me that this is a great idea to use highlights and notes for sub plans.

[00:43:02.000]
So if you're, an article that students are reading and you want certain questions asked, it's a great idea to use them for sub-plans, which I'd never thought about, but great idea.

[00:43:09.000]
But that highlights and notes again, marked up document. Best practice is please have your students do something with it.

[00:43:20.000]
Even if they're gonna go into their highlights and notes, make sure they send it. Send it to their Google Drive if you're using Google or Microsoft Onedrive.

[00:43:27.000]
So they have that marked up document. It turns it into a Google Doc or a Word doc and they never lose it.

[00:43:33.000]
It lands in a folder title. Gale In Context Elementary and it's there until they choose to delete it.

[00:43:39.000]
So best practice because sometimes what happens especially with our younger ones they leave they forget about it and they can't come back and get that article or you know see what they've marked up.

[00:43:47.000]
If they put it in their Google Driver Microsoft Onedrive. The article is actually linked back back out.

[00:43:56.000]
So from there, let's say they're using Google Drive, they can click on the link and come back to this article.

[00:44:03.000]
Now, it being marked up here within the resource won't be won't be there anymore. That's why they want to save the whole article marked up in their in their folder in their own Google Drive.

[00:44:13.000]
But if they come back to the article, maybe they can, you know, they're looking for different information so they can go back to that type of plants and find more information related to the article they were on.

[00:44:24.000]
So it's hyperlinked from Google. They can come right back into the resource. So another way for them to access this great information.

[00:44:32.000]
Okay, there also I just wanna mentioned there's some great cause we're right at the end of our session.

[00:44:35.000]
There's some great if you go want to look for poems Have your teachers or you all take a look at it your advanced search options look for, certain document types like poems or plays.

[00:44:50.000]
I mean, those are great for reading fluency, highlights the notes I talked about, but just know that under that advanced search you have a lot of great tools available to you all.

[00:45:01.000]
Where you can look for certain document types. So if you are looking for poems or plays, and you want to, I love to talk about using plays and using highlights and notes and color coding the play.

[00:45:13.000]
And then printing those off for students to then use within your classroom. Cause there's so many great, plays and poems and that kind of lit information too.

[00:45:23.000]
Okay, let me go back into my PowerPoint because we're right at the end of our session here and I just want to share with you where you can go for additional support.

[00:45:32.000]
Of course, your first line of defense is going to your fantastic folks at the Utah Online School Library.

[00:45:39.000]
I have very much enjoyed working with them and they are going to be your first, looking for support first folks you want to reach out to.

[00:45:48.000]
But I do also want to mention that if you're looking for materials like training materials, tip sheets to tutorials, training decks.

[00:45:56.000]
We have that all available on the Gale support site. Here's some examples of some elementary resources.

[00:46:02.000]
We have one on developing research skills. It's a the first page is a tip sheet for teachers and then there's 3 ready to go activities available for students that take them through that process.

[00:46:14.000]
Here's one screenshot of one of those pages. So a graphic organizer we've created.

[00:46:16.000]
We've got some trading cards. We have question of the week. We have all kinds of great materials for both of these resources and we have all kinds of great materials for both of these resources and we're continuously adding more all the time, for both of these resources and we're continuously adding more all the time.

[00:46:33.000]
Scavenger hunts, projects, there was just 2 new schedule hunts that were just added yesterday on how to do a basic search, then they're designed for elementary students.

[00:46:41.000]
So, we are always looking for ways to connect these resources into the classroom and helping you all bridge that gap between the library and the classroom.

[00:46:47.000]
Looking to promote your resources. We have great marketing materials. Feel free to share those bookmarks, digital, assets, that, are, available, social, in the chat so you have that available it's a good one to bookmark

[00:47:13.000]
And the training survey, I'd love to get your feedback that should pop up at the end of today's session, but if you'd like to use your phone, the QR code is there.

[00:47:20.000]
Again, my name is Tammi Burke. I'm your senior Gale trainer from our senior trainer from Gale.

[00:47:26.000]
And then one on one support. So if you'd like to walk through those support materials, your Gale customer success managers can help you with that.

[00:47:34.000]
So feel free to send them an email and this will be included in my follow-up email. It takes about 24 h before you receive that email, but you'll find a link to where you can locate the recording and also this contact information will be there too.

[00:47:49.000]
But that wraps our session. So I thank you all for your time today. If you have any questions, let me know.

[00:47:56.000]
A question came through. Will this video recording be available in the future to us? Absolutely it will. It'll live in a library on the training link I just shared with you.

[00:48:05.000]
It will live there if you scroll down you'll see those recordings will be posted and I'm not seeing the top one that I just did today.

[00:48:12.000]
I'm that but they will be there and the recorded webinars will be listed there too. So I have to make sure that that posted correctly.

[00:48:23.000]
But not only can you register for upcoming webinars. Oh, there it is. I just didn't refresh my screen recorded webinars will live on the training center.

[00:48:31.000]
So that link I shared with you, if you scroll down you'll see just under the upcoming ones will be the recorded webinars.

[00:48:38.000]
Let me know if you have any other questions, but I thank you all for your time today. And I will stand the line if you have any questions, but thanks and enjoy the rest of your day.

[00:48:48.000]
And thanks for taking that time to spend a little bit of it with us today.
