Welcome to your Florida electronic library training session this is enhance Middle School Diversity, Equity and Inclusion education. My name is Tammi Van Buren, and I'm your guild trainer any questions throughout the session please use the q amp a box
[00:00:19.000]
I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have, or if you need me to go over anything again, I'm happy to do so.
[00:00:26.000]
So our agenda for today. When we are talking about Middle School Diversity, Equity and Inclusion education. I first always like to start with access to your fel resources that you have available to you.
[00:00:40.000]
There have been some recent updates to the fel portal or the website so I'm excited to share those with you they actually just launched yesterday so I'm excited to share that information with you and I'm going to start with an overview of the resource
[00:00:54.000]
that we're going to touch into today. I also if we have some time I'd like to touch into a second resource, and that is your eBook Collection because as I mentioned that was just added yesterday so well the ebooks have been available but the customization
[00:01:09.000]
was just added so I'll explain more of that as we move forward, whereas on the journey of our time focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion content, and then I will leave time if you have any questions asked throughout the session, but also at the
[00:01:24.000]
end I will stay on the line if there's any additional questions I'm going to share with you where you can find training materials and contact information.
[00:01:32.000]
So just to give you an idea of what our focus is going to be today for this session so I had mentioned that the session is definitely focused on diversity, equity and inclusion content that is available, but looking at how that content can support classroom
[00:01:47.000]
instruction and curriculum, and any new content that's been added because we have added, we continuously Add Content regularly, but since March, there's been a lot of content that was added to a gala context Middle School.
[00:02:00.000]
So I'm going to share that with you. we're going to touch into some of that content today, and look at some of those topics that are tied to various di frameworks, such as the learning for justice social justice standards and other curricula, so I want
[00:02:14.000]
to cover that today in our session. And we're really going to explore not only the content, but the tools that are available and these are shared tools across all of your resources.
[00:02:24.000]
So that is what our session is going to be about today, and I just went through the agenda.
[00:02:29.000]
First and foremost, access to your fel resources if you're accessing through the Florida electronic Library website. Here is the link it's a great starting point, it's always, you know, up to date and being in the information there the content that's
[00:02:44.000]
there that's being added is really helpful for folks the way that it's organized on that page and I'm going to talk to you a little bit about that today because I do want to show you the new ebook collection that was added so there's new titles that are
[00:02:57.000]
there. Here's what it looks like.
[00:03:01.000]
And we're going to start talking about Galen context middle school so the resource that we're going to spend the majority of our time in today is Galen context Middle School, and this covers a range of your most studied topics so this is your cross curricular
[00:03:16.000]
resource it's great for our middle school students from six to eighth grade. Do we have some elementary students using this resource, absolutely, especially those that are ready for that next level or looking for primary source documents.
[00:03:29.000]
GALEN context middle schools have great resource for those students to, and then do we have high schoolers that are accessing this resource. Absolutely.
[00:03:37.000]
We have our Exceptional Children special ed students English language learners in this just those students who need that general cross curricular information that we have available.
[00:03:50.000]
so they utilize this resource to.
[00:03:53.000]
So it's really one of those resources that can go all different ways.
[00:03:56.000]
What you're going to find in here are most study topics such as cultures government people us and world history, and also literature. As soon as they're going to find this is a great resource for multimedia content and supporting both national and state
[00:04:12.000]
state curriculum standards. And again, this is for grades six through eight but we see six through six through 12th grade students using this and language arts social studies and science.
[00:04:22.000]
There were recently 18 new portal pages added 64 new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion entries that were tied to various di frameworks. So know that that since March has recently been added, and we continuously are adding more on a regular basis to this
[00:04:39.000]
resource, specifically for diversity, equity and inclusion.
[00:04:45.000]
You also have a book collection from the Florida electronic library you have some titles that are existing and then there are some new titles that you can access through the Florida electronic Library website.
[00:04:57.000]
If you're not familiar with Gale ebooks. It is a fantastic resource that you have available. It's a platform that holds all of your eBook Collection, those that you have through the Florida electronic library and maybe your library purchases your own
[00:05:12.000]
ebooks, they are all live in one spot. They are available 24 seven just like all of your guild databases, all of the content is available anytime, even though they are books that ebook platform allows that 24 seven content availability, unlimited simultaneous
[00:05:29.000]
access, access you could have multiple students accessing at the same time there's no holds or returns or checkouts, they're available at all times, mobile responsive so your screen just like with all of your resources your screen automatically adjust
[00:05:43.000]
to what type of device your student is on, or your user I should say not just students, these are for users to unlimited downloads. So, unlimited. You can download a chapter you could go cover to cover if you wanted to with these ebooks and download as
[00:05:58.000]
many pieces of that ebook as you like.
[00:06:01.000]
I love the search feature within our Gale ebooks platform. It's very intuitive to browse the Browse features are very helpful you have great filters to limit down the content that show up in your search results.
[00:06:14.000]
It really is a great tool and very powerful to look through all of your books at one time. You also have topic finder so if you're familiar with topic finder and your other Gale resources.
[00:06:24.000]
It's also available in Gale ebooks, so you have it in middle school which we're going to cover today but also in your ebooks.
[00:06:33.000]
And just like with your other Gale resources and other shared feature is that the text can be translated into over 40 languages, the text to speech option is available and you can download any content as an mp3, and also your ebooks can be integrated
[00:06:50.000]
with Google, Microsoft, and any learning management system so that Google and Microsoft have been a part of all of your resources for quite some time now, and the LM s integration has also been available for a couple years.
[00:07:04.000]
So just know that if you are using Canvas or school G, for example, that your resources can be integrated into those learning management systems.
[00:07:14.000]
Alright. So with that, let's explore. If there's any questions just a reminder, please use that q amp a box I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have.
[00:07:24.000]
Okay, so when we are accessing through the Florida electronic library now I can only get so far because I am coming to you from Michigan. But if you're in the state of Florida, you should be taken right into the resources you are being authenticated based
[00:07:39.000]
on where your location is and then you're accessing in the state of Florida you'll be taken right into your resources.
[00:07:46.000]
What is new on this page if you haven't been here in a little bit. We just recently added this ebook tab, and the ebooks at the top. And the nice thing is here is that the ebooks do take you to individual collections, while we're talking about Middle
[00:08:03.000]
School Diversity, Equity and Inclusion so let's start there and then I'll touch into those ebooks so if I were accessing accessing this as a student, I could go to the A to Z, or I would probably go into grade level so as a middle school student I would
[00:08:16.000]
go into grade levels.
[00:08:19.000]
And then from here I can jump to middle school, makes it very simple.
[00:08:26.000]
And I can access, Gale In Context middle school right here in the center of the page, you can see on the right. These new boxes that have been added.
[00:08:35.000]
These will take you to all of your ebooks so if you're looking for equity and inclusion titles, they've been curated for you, and the E book collection is available here so you have 10 titles available under the middle school Equity and Inclusion tab,
[00:08:52.000]
and we'll talk a little bit more about that, for diversity, equity and inclusion, you would, I would suggest going to two different areas equity and inclusion and the multi cultural and social studies, that's the one we're going to touch into today, you're
[00:09:04.000]
going to find a lot of those di titles in those two areas, but for today's purposes. We're going to start with Galen context middle school but I did want to share how this is laid out for your users.
[00:09:21.000]
the homepage where I where I just was or you can see over here to the right hand side, then it's broken down a little differently this is only taking you to those ebook collections, but again, they are section out for you so here we have the elementary
[00:09:35.000]
titles, and these also live in Galen context Elementary, so that you will find them in that resource.
[00:09:42.000]
And our middle school titles are here so it's really nice if you're looking for a certain collection to have this curated collection broken out for you right on the fel site.
[00:09:53.000]
Okay, so today we are going into Galen context Middle School.
[00:10:00.000]
And I have that open here.
[00:10:03.000]
Alright so Galen context Middle School remember this is cross curricular, you're going to find a little bit of everything in here, you have great multimedia content is built for our sixth through eighth grade students right on the homepage.
[00:10:16.000]
We do have the basic search Advanced Search and the contextual toolbar over here to the right hand side, I'm not going to touch it, I'll touch into a few of the shared features but I really want to focus on the content today, because that is the topic
[00:10:29.000]
of our training.
[00:10:29.000]
our training. As we looked down below you do have the subject areas which will be really helpful for your students to drill down that content. All right, it just took me out there.
[00:10:40.000]
There we go. Back in, it will help them drill down that content. Now I'm approaching this I'm going to give you a couple different scenarios a couple different examples and the first one I'm going to talk to you about is, I thought about this and I thought
[00:10:54.000]
well if I were a teacher.
[00:10:56.000]
And I wanted to kick off a unit on the civil rights movement, and I would really like to pique my students interest and build their background knowledge maybe I'm developing a tech set that I want to build out and I want to start with something to really
[00:11:11.000]
draw them in. Well, I know that my Galen context Middle School Resource has great video content available because it's multimedia. So what I could do is if I'm looking at civil rights, I would do a basic search as a teacher I would do a basic search your
[00:11:27.000]
students may approach us a little differently, they may access because they're middle schoolers they tend to go through either.
[00:11:35.000]
They're doing a basic search, or they're accessing through the subject categories and going into any of our topic pages that we have here.
[00:11:45.000]
Now the nice thing is with your in context resources. If I have a topic page related to what I'm searching for. You can see with search assist.
[00:11:56.000]
All of the topic pages I haven't just started typing in civil rights, and I can see them listed here they're in bold and they are at the top of my list so I know that there's a topic page available for the civil rights movement.
[00:12:09.000]
And that is a great starting point for a teacher to share information with their students you're kicking off a unit on the civil rights movement, why not share an entire topic page full of curated information, ready to go for them.
[00:12:24.000]
Right. So that's what I would do. I would, I can you could do, you could use get link and grab a link back to the all this content copy and paste that link, share it with your students.
[00:12:34.000]
Maybe you have a lesson plan, or you're using a learning management system and you want to take them back to all of this content, get link is a great tool to use for that and we'll touch into how often you can use get link, another tool you can use and
[00:12:48.000]
I'll model this a little bit later is Google Classroom. And you can pull this entire topic page right into Google Classroom.
[00:12:56.000]
So those are two options to quickly share content with your students. Let's talk about the topic page itself. So looking at the topic page, you can see we have this image and essay overview great starting point wait great way to jump in and grab some
[00:13:10.000]
information, but we also have all these different content types listed below.
[00:13:16.000]
There are here in the center of the page. And if I wanted to just search through the content that's curated on this page for me what I can do is I can search within my results right here on the page.
[00:13:28.000]
If I go back up the basic search, it's going to search through the entire database. If I search within the results then it's just going to keep me on this page and help me drill down, it's a great tool for students.
[00:13:40.000]
If you're thinking about it if you're linking this entire topic page out, this would be a great starting point for them to find specific content that they may need for a project or a paper, but I'm approaching this as a teacher and I really want my students
[00:13:53.000]
to to really be engaged in the topic that we're about to study.
[00:13:58.000]
So, one thing I can do is I can look at our video content.
[00:14:01.000]
I can use this, which is what I would do I would jump into that content type but before I do, I do want to scroll down and show you how its organized on the page in case you're not familiar.
[00:14:13.000]
We also have at the bottom related topic pages so just from the civil rights movement I could jump to Rosa Parks, or racism or the Montgomery Bus Boycott, if I wanted more information there and it can be very specific to, right.
[00:14:28.000]
So I will jump into videos. There are 34 different videos that are available, but maybe this is going to you know this is going to be the starting point for me, I want something that is that students can relate to.
[00:14:43.000]
It's not too long.
[00:14:45.000]
It's a short video to really get that conversation started and build that background knowledge, I would access and utilize one of these videos and I really liked the newsreel of 1963 the civil rights march on Washington.
[00:15:00.000]
And the video does start right up. You have a transcript below, you have the ability to turn on closed captioning very helpful you could make this whole screen so if you're sharing this with your students, as a teacher, this would be fantastic.
[00:15:13.000]
I could share it on my on my whiteboard on my smart board, and with my students and we can watch this together and then open it up for discussion after and it's just a five short five minute video.
[00:15:25.000]
Okay, or maybe I want to grab a link, and share it with my students, maybe I have a flipped classroom, and I want to share this with my students I want them to watch it and be prepared and the you know the next day we're going to move on into our unit
[00:15:38.000]
and we're going to start our first assignment, you know maybe that's the approach I want also our video content is great for virtual learning, you have virtual learning happening again these are short videos you're not asking them to watch a 30 or 45
[00:15:50.000]
minute video, you're asked them to watch a short video, and then be prepared to discuss and you could create an assignment around it.
[00:15:56.000]
Okay, so that that would be one approach to to some of the content that we have available. Another item that I love, especially when you're talking about the civil rights movement is utilizing our primary source documents, you're going to find great primary
[00:16:10.000]
source documents in Galen context Middle School.
[00:16:13.000]
So, I would go into primary source because I maybe maybe I'm a student that. Now that we've started the unit we have a project that we're working on it's a group project we're doing some research for our social studies project or unit on the civil rights
[00:16:27.000]
movement, and I have to present it to the class and I want to find some great content to really bring into my presentation. Maybe they're creating an artifact like us, like maybe Google Slides or PowerPoint slides or a poster or maybe they're doing a
[00:16:42.000]
video of their own, or maybe it's a newscast. I love that if when, when students do stuff like that. Maybe it's a newscast that they're doing, how could they bring in primary sources well what about a personal account, a first hand account of something
[00:16:56.000]
that happened of something someone that was there.
[00:16:59.000]
One thing I can do is I can filter down this content, if I wanted to, to all level threes and fours. So let's talk about these content levels, your middle schoolers are generally going to fall into the level three.
[00:17:14.000]
But maybe they want because their primary sources. I would suggest also including that level four because primary sources are exactly that they're an actual source there and the actual documents so they may be at a little bit higher level but you don't
[00:17:28.000]
to leave that out because Don't forget we have that listen feature they can always have it read aloud to them. But utilizing this content level is level three and four is going to be Middle School is generally level three and high school is generally
[00:17:42.000]
level four. One and two, is generally are our elementary lower and upper, and then level five is five is more of that higher high school level 11th 12th graders and then undergrad.
[00:17:55.000]
So for this, let's level two level three and, or let's filter to level three and four.
[00:18:03.000]
And here I have some options to choose from so it did level my primary sources but it also apply those filters to all of my content.
[00:18:13.000]
Now this would be a great way to just to plug in that teacher piece to us get link because you filter down your content. And now talk about differentiated instruction, if you needed level twos and threes, you could use this tool filter to the content
[00:18:31.000]
levels with just a simple click and use get link and then share that with your students.
[00:18:36.000]
Alright, so here's a great primary source document.
[00:18:39.000]
The rest of Rosa Parks December 1 1955. We start with a bit of a summary but then you get the personal it's a personal account you can see here at the top, the document type is a personal account.
[00:18:51.000]
How great would this be to use within your project maybe you are, you have students that want to do a newscast. And here is an opportunity to take the words of someone that was there Rosa Parks, specifically, of what happened that day.
[00:19:08.000]
So utilizing those primary sources for that type of information is a great tool available, especially when you're talking about diversity, equity and inclusion.
[00:19:15.000]
You want that first hand account, as much as possible.
[00:19:19.000]
Okay, so that's just some of the content available now What else can I do within this resource so let me show you some additional content. so great topic pages.
[00:19:32.000]
racism.
[00:19:35.000]
And it does take me to a topic page, but actually where I want to go is.
[00:19:42.000]
Let me just type it in, I'd So now if I don't use a topic page, let me show you what that looks like.
[00:19:48.000]
It took me to it. Anyways, Even though I didn't select me try that again.
[00:19:53.000]
I think I hovered over it.
[00:19:56.000]
Now, it's still taking me right to that topic page.
[00:19:59.000]
Interesting. I am going to go through advanced search and see if that changes anything up here.
[00:20:07.000]
Because what I want to show you is and I'm doing just keyword search and advanced search, if I wanted to do a basic search which is just like using the basic search bar at the top, I would have to have that option here, or if I wanted to search through
[00:20:21.000]
the entire document for a term, I can do that and it will search through every single document. I also have the ability to search just for that subject keyword is looking for the mention of it the first hundred to 200 words, and I am just going to click
[00:20:37.000]
Search. Okay, This is what I wanted to show you so when you do a search, and it pulls back, you don't click into a topic page that your search results are going to look like this.
[00:20:47.000]
So there's a lot of content here right on the right hand side, you do happen to have two topic pages available that are suggested here.
[00:20:56.000]
And you do have a lot of great content a lot of magazine articles we have a few more primary sources news articles. And so using your filters on the right hand side are going to be really helpful for teachers and for students that are accessing this information.
[00:21:13.000]
So let's say I do I want to just all the middle school. I have Lexile measure where I can select multiple ranges, if I wanted to, or again I have that content level.
[00:21:25.000]
I have the ability to search within these search results so this is a great way to drill down.
[00:21:31.000]
Publication Date subjects are also here and I love document types.
[00:21:38.000]
So the search term I used was racism. That was the search term that I used for the search, and it took me to the topic page. Thanks for asking Andrea.
[00:21:50.000]
Yep. You're welcome.
[00:21:54.000]
Okay. So, but I did have to go through advanced search, I haven't had that happen before, to be honest with you and I don't know if maybe my computer cookie that information could very well be the case, I'll have to try it again after the session sometimes
[00:22:06.000]
zoom likes to mess with my databases when I'm working in them. So I will have to try that after the session again and see what happens.
[00:22:14.000]
But anyhow, back to these filters, so you have a lot of great tools here available that you can filter down this content. I am just interested in my middle school content.
[00:22:25.000]
And this really, when you're looking for middle school content magazine and news tends to jump things up to the next level. And same with video so be careful with your videos if you filter it down to level threes and then all of a sudden you see there's
[00:22:40.000]
not many videos available. Keep an eye on that so that's one of those tips and tricks I like to share, because a video you're listening to right. So, the level if it's a level five it's it's okay because you can still listen to that and comprehend that
[00:22:56.000]
content it's not the reading level is so much that you're concerned about.
[00:23:01.000]
So you can see look at my videos are absolutely gone.
[00:23:05.000]
So definitely a change when you do apply that that level three.
[00:23:10.000]
Okay, so I applied the level three going to go into reference.
[00:23:14.000]
And I do you can see we've got some great titles here anti racism racism in sports. This is the one I wanted to jump into, in particular, but you can see racism in the criminal justice so you're really getting an idea, you're getting all looks, we don't
[00:23:31.000]
have one viewpoint here you, it's a broad look we are a global company and so we do work with publishers from around the world, you're going to see a lot of that content here available within the resource to this one in particular I love, because it is
[00:23:47.000]
written by Jason Reynolds. So, this may be a book that is being studied in classrooms that is being used in classrooms at the middle school, high school level.
[00:23:58.000]
And here you have some great information we even have a topic page on this but you have some great information about the work you have Some fast facts you have some information about the author the plot summary.
[00:24:11.000]
So a great overview when you're kicking off this book or you want to pull it into your study.
[00:24:17.000]
Your diversity, equity inclusion study or maybe it's a specific unit study you're looking at, to utilize this as a tool to. And again, don't forget you have that get link or I could pull this entire article right into google classroom and share it with
[00:24:32.000]
my students, for them to read.
[00:24:34.000]
Okay. When we are at the article level we also have some great accessibility tools I had mentioned, listening to a video but you also have the ability to listen to this text being read aloud.
[00:24:45.000]
You can translate the text we are at 40 languages, actually, I think it's 4141 language so I always say just over 40 languages, you can increase the font size decrease or increase the font size.
[00:25:01.000]
You also can change the navigation tool so you can translate the navigation tools on the page so these tools here you can do that from the article level, it's also just in case you're not aware, it is available at the top of the resources soon as you
[00:25:16.000]
sit down, you have that ability to translate if I wanted all of my navigational tools to change the Spanish, I can easily do that as soon as I sit down.
[00:25:25.000]
Okay, but at the document level the change the text on the page, and the listen button, so both will translate you'll translate the article, and what you're listening to at the same time, you'll have to use this feature.
[00:25:38.000]
And again, these are shared features across all your guild resources. The listen tool. This is where I feel like it's a great tool because you're not leaving kids behind.
[00:25:48.000]
So maybe they, they are more at a level two, can they listen to this text being read aloud to them. Absolutely. you know what else they can do.
[00:25:56.000]
Under the settings right here this little gear.
[00:25:59.000]
They have the ability to change any of the colors. I did have in a session just yesterday somebody asked about, um, do you have a dyslexia font. And I always share that with these features when you click that listen button I had a librarian in Texas share
[00:26:15.000]
with me that the. She had issues with dyslexia. And she said, having read aloud and highlighting it and blues and greens was really helpful. It's also very similar to overlays that are used in classrooms with students.
[00:26:30.000]
So she said it does keep the words from jumping on the page there's also this other feature and I do have it turned on it is defaulted to off, but I use this yesterday my computer remembered, so it, enhanced text visibility I turn that on.
[00:26:45.000]
When I now close this and I click play it pulls out, you can see it's reading that reading that title. To me, it will read everything on the page, and it pulls out that text.
[00:26:58.000]
Now I don't have to have that turned on, I could just have this view that I'm seeing at the top and the title, where it's highlighting it as its as it's being read aloud, but that has text visibility is also really helpful for students.
[00:27:12.000]
And then this is also where you can download this as an mp3 and listen to it later.
[00:27:17.000]
Okay. So we talked about different articles we talked about the, the shared accessibility features that are are tools that support accessibility across this resource let's go into another example.
[00:27:29.000]
So I don't have to go back to the homepage, but I like to start with a clean slate, and this time let's approach this as an LA class, and you know like class doing literary works and author study, many students are super interested I don't know if you've
[00:27:44.000]
read this year any of the series yet, but in the legend series by Mary Lou, and I want to highlight in my la class, I want to highlight more diverse authors.
[00:27:53.000]
How can I do that well this is a great way to utilize that to look, let's take a look at the series let's see what we have available.
[00:28:01.000]
So if I type in legend,
[00:28:07.000]
my search assist is now not working.
[00:28:12.000]
Oh, there could be the problem.
[00:28:16.000]
Okay, let's try this again sorry for a few tech difficulties. Today, we're going to power through though no problems here. Alright so searching for.
[00:28:28.000]
There we go.
[00:28:29.000]
Legend, the series.
[00:28:33.000]
We do happen to have a topic page on the series. It's like I said it's a young adult. This is one of those new topic pages that was added the topic pages I had mentioned that have been added since March, this is one of the new ones that have been added
[00:28:48.000]
for diversity, equity inclusion, great one to bring in a diverse author and if you're not familiar with Marie Lou she is a writer, and she's a Chinese American author and she writes young adult fiction.
[00:29:01.000]
And she has a couple series that are really popular. Um, but they're dystopian works, always really popular, especially with middle school and high school students.
[00:29:09.000]
Okay, so this is a great topic page that I can share information I'm going to find some content on the series. I'm also going to find great biographies if I want to highlight not just the work but the author itself too.
[00:29:23.000]
So you're going to find that type of content on these topic pages. If we take a look at the essay overview, which is here at the top, and you're going to find these on all of your topic pages right the image and the essay overview.
[00:29:36.000]
You're also going to find, maybe Some fast facts you might find timelines, but you're also going to find critical thinking questions. So this is because we're talking about a literary work, why not assign this article for this document for your students
[00:29:51.000]
to read or just to do some, you know, it's great to have those critical thinking questions when you're having discussions in your classroom.
[00:29:58.000]
Especially with LA, I mean at some of the classrooms are set up. I know my son's in particular I visited last night and they had comfortable chairs and she had flexible seating and I thought this is a great place to learn, I want to come to class to learn
[00:30:14.000]
from her because I was just blown away and I can imagine, pulling in these digital resources, imagine using these critical thinking questions because there's a lot of topics that could be talked about not just in the series but what was the author thinking.
[00:30:28.000]
Does she bring in her background, right into this work that she wrote, so that type of information those types of discussions is, is what I imagined. Alright, so looking at, let's go back to I just wanted to point out those critical thinking questions
[00:30:43.000]
Oh another tool that you can use is with your critical thinking questions.
[00:30:48.000]
You could use the highlight and notes tool where you could highlight a chunk of text maybe the first question, and put it in, in, in one color like yellow, save that and then find that answer below to that question also select yellow and then put some
[00:31:09.000]
discussion points that maybe you want to share.
[00:31:12.000]
Because you know you're going to discuss this article your teacher assigned it to you and save that. Now the nice thing is with this, and I'm going to keep building this area out but at this point, my best practice I always share is keep the if you want
[00:31:25.000]
to keep this article and what you've highlighted any notes you've taken, then do something with that, send it to Google, Microsoft, email, download or print.
[00:31:34.000]
We also have the contextual toolbar, which sticks to me so I'm down here if it's floating down the page with me. I still have those options send to download, print, are all here.
[00:31:45.000]
The center you will give you, Google, Microsoft an email.
[00:31:51.000]
Okay, so that's a best practice, always do something with that before you leave this document so that you have it, it'll land in your folder you're using Google Drive, it'll live there until you choose to delete it all everything you highlighted and all
[00:32:03.000]
the notes you've taken will also stay with that document. So really helpful tool to have. Let's go into themes and construction so here you're talking a little bit more about the, the work itself.
[00:32:17.000]
You're going to get those fast facts but really talking more about the themes of the book so you're doing this literary work study more critical thinking questions vocabulary is also here, but here I could do some more highlighting maybe there's something
[00:32:34.000]
that jumps out at me, on, on the theme of this book that I know we're discussing and I know my teacher, we're going to talk about a little bit more in class tomorrow or writing a paper, I need to write an essay on this book is their information, maybe
[00:32:47.000]
there's a quote in here that I want to keep another bit of a dive into is going to that back to that topic page now I ok I've looked at the theme I've got it went into the overview.
[00:32:58.000]
Let's look at the biography. I want to learn more about the author I want to know more about her background here's some fast facts about here. Early life working, working in gaming.
[00:33:08.000]
Oh, that's interesting, more critical thinking questions. What is her career like as a writer, maybe I want to pull in maybe she has a thought on how she approaches these young adult novels and I want to include that in my, in my discussion, or my presentation
[00:33:24.000]
or my essay whatever I'm working on.
[00:33:31.000]
Okay, so now what can I do with this information right I've done some highlighting remember my best practice is to always send these documents somewhere.
[00:33:43.000]
Any of those tools send to download or print.
[00:33:47.000]
But on whole other areas being built out, and that's the highlights and notes area. Let me show you that right now.
[00:33:53.000]
And then we're going to take a little bit more, some, look at some more content.
[00:33:57.000]
What happened is now I was in three different articles. I was highlighting some text, I've sent those documents over to my Google Drive because I want to keep them.
[00:34:08.000]
But this, these digital notes were being built out the whole time I was working within the session.
[00:34:13.000]
So I can edit my notes, and then send them over maybe I want to add a little bit more to the discussion points, I can save that.
[00:34:23.000]
I want to add a legend here, where I'm labeling the colors I think I said my, my pink was quote, and maybe my blue was some facts.
[00:34:39.000]
I'm yellow just information. Okay.
[00:34:44.000]
I can save that you can see it's been added here now when I send this to my Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive download or print all of that will go with it, including the bibliography.
[00:34:55.000]
So it's all there for me from Google if I wanted to come back to the article. Now, it's not going to be marked up the article is just going to be that fresh document, again, but if I do want to come back to that starting point and go back to that biography.
[00:35:09.000]
All of these titles here will be hyperlinked out from my Google Doc. So I can go back into the database and go back to that spot now again it's not going to keep my highlights and notes already have that already have those because my best practice was
[00:35:24.000]
to send the entire document into my Google Drive. So I have that entire document I can go back in and mark it up again but maybe I want to go back to that document and do some additional exploration.
[00:35:36.000]
So that option is available and that's a really great tool to use from your Google Drive.
[00:35:42.000]
Okay, so let's take another look there's another topic page that was added that I want to share with you today.
[00:35:48.000]
And I'm just going to start to do a basic search because it's always really helpful.
[00:35:56.000]
The Japanese American internment. So this is a new topic page that was added.
[00:36:03.000]
If I was utilizing this, I loved the primary sources here. I know I had talked about primary sources already, but looking at the primary sources when you're talking about a topic like this and understanding what happened and looking at the history, and
[00:36:17.000]
you know this is a great example of of diversity, equity and inclusion and what what we need to do better at and move forward with and our youth are the ones that are going to help us get there, right.
[00:36:30.000]
So, primary sources looking at those first hand accounts maybe you're going to find a memoir, or a diary entry or a letter here, but looking at these primary sources and filtering them down you can see we happen to have a level two here available within
[00:36:45.000]
this resource there's also some level files I tend to tend to see them a little bit higher because remember they are an actual primary source.
[00:36:53.000]
So I can utilize these primary sources, I just wanted to look at that content, if I look at all the content types. Another tool that's available is topic Finder.
[00:37:04.000]
So whenever I'm even from a topic page. once I click into, even if it's reference that you can see below that filter start topic finder now topic finder does live under Advanced Search.
[00:37:17.000]
If you wanted if you wanted to use it as a search option click into advanced search, select topic finder, put in your term, but you can also access topic finder this way from your search results.
[00:37:28.000]
So I select topic finder, and it pulls in all of that information into this visual representation of my information on my search results, and its interactive.
[00:37:40.000]
So from here, we have a lot of students that are visual learners, they can start to drill down.
[00:37:46.000]
They can go into the United States history. And you can see on the right hand side there here my results I'm starting to see those documents and it could be an image it could be a video, it could be an article I mean all of that is here available, and
[00:38:00.000]
maybe from here I want to look at Pearl Harbor.
[00:38:04.000]
And you can see the documents that are available.
[00:38:08.000]
Looking at this list.
[00:38:12.000]
I can click into any of these any of these documents, maybe this one speaks to me It gives me a little bit of a summary. And I can quickly jump to this article and this is a topic overview, you can see the document type is always going to be under that
[00:38:26.000]
information icon, along with the content level, and the Lexile measure.
[00:38:33.000]
Okay.
[00:38:34.000]
All right. So just some different ways to find content some content that's available. You also there's so knew I had mentioned there's new entries that were added right.
[00:38:44.000]
Some of those and I'm just going to list a few the list was quite long but here's few that that jumped out at me activist groups ageism disability gender identity, human rights, Native American rights sexism, one that I'm going to touch into today is
[00:38:57.000]
social justice.
[00:39:03.000]
Now, social justice.
[00:39:06.000]
We don't have a topic page for it but this is an entry. So you're going to find under social justice, I loved what it pulled back for me, looking at just some of the titles here.
[00:39:17.000]
The first three, in reference social justice Black Lives Matter activists groups. Right. Talk about hitting what we need to cover in the classroom, what the curriculum what the frameworks are looking at.
[00:39:27.000]
We've pulled that in for you into your databases they're ready to go. You just have to access them. So doing these searches finding the content that's available, maybe this is something that I want to share in my Google Classroom.
[00:39:41.000]
I can click on Google Classroom. And let me just show you real quick. I do have to share that screen it pops up in a different window. There we go. So I can share this, maybe I want to share it to my social studies class.
[00:39:54.000]
She was an action. This is an announcement, click Go. Here's my announcement.
[00:40:02.000]
Select an article and be prepared to discuss
[00:40:11.000]
with your group.
[00:40:14.000]
And then I can post it.
[00:40:17.000]
Once I posted I have that option to view.
[00:40:22.000]
Go back to
[00:40:28.000]
are still sharing that. Okay.
[00:40:30.000]
It disappeared on me, hidden.
[00:40:33.000]
There we go.
[00:40:36.000]
Okay. When I click View
[00:40:44.000]
share that screen.
[00:40:49.000]
It takes me into my social studies page. It's much smoother when you're doing it on the database it's because zoom doesn't share everything on my screen that it gets a little looks like it's harder than it is it's really quite simple but here's that basic
[00:41:04.000]
search, and my students have that information there and they can jump right to that basic search, those are my search results that I received when I typed in social justice.
[00:41:16.000]
Okay, so just another idea, and how you can utilize Google Classroom within your, your teachings in your classroom. Or if you're a librarian and you want to curate a collection of information and share it with your teachers, that's a great way to do it
[00:41:32.000]
to utilize your Google Classroom.
[00:41:34.000]
Okay, the last thing I wanted to cover is good looking at the ebook collections so now these are recently curated for you all they are available through the Florida electronic library so if you want to access them today and do some exploration, you can
[00:41:49.000]
do so. If you have any questions about those titles, you have folks at Gale that are that are there to support you. Also watch for announcements coming from the Florida electronic library moving forward because they are going to be making some announcements
[00:42:03.000]
about those titles. So I am going to go into.
[00:42:08.000]
Let me log in here.
[00:42:11.000]
I have to go in a little differently, again, I think I've mentioned that I am coming to you from Michigan so it does not like me to go in.
[00:42:19.000]
From here it stops me So anyhow, this is how you can access the resources on the left hand side. Here's all those collections that I had mentioned So these have been curated for you.
[00:42:31.000]
The middle school you have the equity and inclusion, which is a great one. When you're talking about diversity, equity and inclusion.
[00:42:39.000]
And then also the multi cultural and social studies.
[00:42:43.000]
When you're looking at different cultures, and you want to understand them a little better one Title I really like is the Junior World Book Encyclopedia of world cultures, you have multiple volumes and to access them pick this one because it is slightly
[00:42:58.000]
different to access them, you do have the Choose the volume section here.
[00:43:05.000]
Now we're going to go to.
[00:43:08.000]
We're actually going to go to Iraq.
[00:43:12.000]
A couple clicks and it takes me to this text view of the ebook.
[00:43:18.000]
You can see my explore panel provides me with more like this, it also has related subjects text view offers all of these tools that translate the enlarging and increase and decrease of tax the listen button are all here.
[00:43:32.000]
I also this is where I can download. I can send this to Google, Microsoft, email or print, but we also have a couple features up here at the top Table of Contents because we are in an E book and book new book view, provide you exactly that.
[00:43:50.000]
Here's your book view.
[00:43:52.000]
The nice thing is if you download this, this is what you're going to get you're going to get a PDF version of this book so if you want to download this chapter on Iraq, you can do that by selecting that download button and it will give you a PDF of this
[00:44:06.000]
book.
[00:44:07.000]
I can turn the pages.
[00:44:10.000]
And you can see I love the content when I was exploring here one thing. As a former teacher that I loved was looking at relationships like even what gestures the meaning of a gesture is in Iraq, living conditions very interesting to read that family life,
[00:44:27.000]
how it extended family as a part of their lives and large families to food education. One thing I love to was here was a recipe that is something I totally would have brought into my classroom, I would have been like oh we're gonna do this we're going
[00:44:43.000]
to do this as a group and we're going to, you know, and if we're exploring different cultures and we really want to look and bring that diversity into our classroom.
[00:44:51.000]
Food is a great way to do that so you're going to find that type of content in your ebook collections, but looking at it from the book view, you really get that great visual, you can.
[00:45:03.000]
here but I just wanted to show all of the curated collections that are available, especially those ones that we have available for middle school, and on the topics that we're talking about today.
[00:45:15.000]
Okay. So with that, let me go back to the PowerPoint I just have a couple slides to share. If there are any questions, please let me know.
[00:45:24.000]
I'm happy to answer those questions.
[00:45:26.000]
We do have I mean I showed you that custom collection there's a little bit as a little bit of a teaser to because next month we have a create custom collections in your ebooks session where I'm going to teach you how to create those custom collections
[00:45:41.000]

[00:45:54.000]
